Solar Boat Second meeting
2016
Questions?
• When do you want to have meetings – Tuesday won’t work.• We build the boat November 7 or 8. Which day works better –
Saturday or Sunday.• Know – skipper must pass swim test (50m swim, tread water 1 min)• Perfect Skipper weight is 132 lbs
The Boat
Mount motor low (for balance) but high enough to prevent any water reaching it
As horizontal as possibleSmall
support
Tube around propeller to direct thrust to the rear
Gear ratio for both endurance and speed
Where shaft goes through hull ?????
Motor Support?
Steering ?
Hard, slick Paint
1. Cooling Systems for solar panels, batteries, and motor
2. Moveable solar panels
Which propeller
Design Teams
• Mechanical• Drive Train – Gearing, shaft, seal, propeller• Pick gear ratios to try for both endurance and
speed• Steering• Throttle• Safety (floatation, bilge pump, signaling, etc.)• Design of Parts, find and order parts• Know the mechanical rules pertaining to the
boat• Technical Report
Design Teams• Electrical• Solar / Electrical Design – Electrical Systems and Connections.• Wire sizes and lengths, hookups, etc.• Pick Batteries (Odyssey 925, 28 AH) Maximum 25kg (55 lbs.) Need 2 sets
minimum. Amp Hour (AH) rating and surge power is important.• Pick Solar Panels (efficiency not as important – weight and temp. coefficient is
important.• We have motors (Perm PMG-132).• Know the electrical rules pertaining to the boat• Technical Report
Design Teams
• Hull• Steering, throttle, dead mans stick)• Safety, comfort and efficiency of skipper • Need to pick a paint (Interlux VC Offshore looks good – dries very hard,
burnishible, and contains silicone to make the boat slippery)• Skipper comfort, safety, and efficiency• Layout of components (balance – fore/aft and left/right, electrical
connections – short runs, thick wires from battery to motor, etc.) • Know the rules pertaining to the boat• Help with Technical Report
Everybody
• Help with the video
• Color and Design of the Boat
• Ways to reduce drag and improve the boat
• Drivers – Testers, Racers (Long Distance and Sprinters)
Some Requirements• Boat
• Max weight 450 lbs• Boat cannot heal more than 15 degrees with 10 kg at one side• Have bilge pump (500 GPH for 2 hours), fire extinguisher, floatation, life vest, dead mans switch,
paddle, two signal devices (audible and visual)• Power to motor stops when throttle is released• Can’t modify external dimensions• Engine, batteries, drive shaft, propeller rear of bulkhead• Instruments, steering, skipper forward of bulkhead
• Solar panels• Cannot extend more than 36 cm (14 in) from gunwale• 320 W maximum• Can’t be attached to the boat with Velcro.
• Battery• 55 lbs total weight• 24V maximum• Lead Acid
