The British are re-booking holidays at a rate that has not happened since the 80s and 90s. The reason seems to be that tourists are seeking the safety of the travel agency and tour company after the fiasco which involved contracts made over the Internet during the two weeks of cancellations of flights

between the Costa Blanca and Britain, and which trapped thousands of passengers in Alicante hotels.

Reservation of seats via the internet has levelled off after five years of growth, and hoteliers and tour operators have detected a return to the traditional holiday booked in a travel agency.

The economic recovery and revaluation of the pound against the euro has improved bookings, nearly all of which have been through an agency.

On the other hand the Spanish are booking mainly through the internet.

Good Outlook For Hotels On The Costa Blanca In 2010After an erratic winter trade and a spring marred by the cloud of volcanic ash, there is a ray of hope for hoteliers on the Costa Blanca.

Awarded annually by the Foundation for Environmental Education to certify quality and cleanliness of the beach water and sand, the existence of services such as surveillance and first aid, safe and easy access, health services, information programs and environmental education.

The province of Alicante has won five blue flags more this year than in 2009, including the re-awarding of flags to Denia; Les Bovet, Llevant; Benidorm, El Postiguet and L’Albufereta in Alicante and the beach of guardamar del Segura Centro.

As well, the beaches of Carabassí de Elche, Los Náufragos and Cala Piteras de Torrevieja were awarded flags for the first time.

The Association of Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC) organised the initiative, and has published a list of blue flags that will fly at 108 beaches and marinas in the Comunitat Valenciana.

Action Against Exam CheatsStarting on 9th June, when around 15,000 students in the Valencian region will sit

examinations for entry into Universities, measures are being taken to combat cheating.

Envigilators are being told to look specifically for students who are wearing ‘earpieces’ after recent dubious student successes involving a device which relayed questions to a van parked outside, and from which the answers were dictated back to the students.

The Internet is full of pages with earpieces, as many as 17 different models, in a price range from 100-730 €.

The Universities have not revealed which methods of control they will be using, but stress that the use of mobile phones and radios will not be permitted, and special attention will be paid to students with long hair that covers their ears.

Likewise, students who wear the Islamic headscarf, or Hijaz, could be required to justify their choice.

Spain To Extend Smoking Ban In 2011

Spain will amend its anti-tobacco law to extend a smoking ban to bars, cafes, restaurants and all other enclosed public spaces in the country next year, Health

Minister Trinidad Jimenez said.The new rules will exempt hotel rooms and

private smoking clubs, as well as prisons and psychiatric hospitals because people in these institutions “do not have the freedom to have private spaces”, she told a news conference.

“Smoking will be allowed in terraces, at stadiums, at bullrings, at all open spaces,” the minister added.

Under a law that came into effect in the country of some 47 million people in January 2006, smoking was banned in the workplace as well as at shops, schools, hospitals, cultural centres and on public transport.

Spain’s Hotel and Catering Federation has opposed further smoking restrictions. It argues sales would fall by seven percent in

restaurants and by 10-15 percent in bars and cafes if a full smoking ban comes into effect.

But the government argues that other European nations have

already banned smoking at bars, restaurants and other leisure establishments without harming their economy.

It says the ban is necessary because smoking is one of the

biggest killers in Spain, with some 50,000 smoking-related deaths annually.

The bill will be debated in parliament later this month.

Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero’s socialist government are seven seats short of a majority but the amendment to the anti-tabacco law has the backing of two smaller left-wing parties and it is certain to pass.

Catalonia’s regional parliament is now expected to vote on the motion - which calls for a tightening of the region’s animal protection law to remove an exception for bullfights from a ban on the killing or mistreating animals in shows -- in the coming weeks.

Animal rights activists, campaigning under the platform “Prou!” or “Enough!” in the Catalan language, collected 180,000 signatures in Catalonia on a petition calling for the motion to be debated and voted on by the assembly.

If the motion is approved in Catalonia, home to Barcelona, Spain’s second-largest city, it would become the first region in the country outside of the Canary Islands to ban the practice.

The wealthy region, where many seek independence from Spain, has led opposition to bullfighting, in part due to a desire among some Catalans to strike a separate identity from the rest of the country.

In 2003 it passed a sweeping animal protection law that restricted towns without bullrings from building them and prohibited all children under 14 from attending bullfights.

During the right-wing dictatorship of general Francisco Franco bullfighting was promoted as a unifying national spectacle.

But its mass appeal has faded with polls showing a rising disinterest in bullfighting throughout Spain, especially among the young, although it retains a passionate following and leading matadors are treated as celebrities.

Unfenced Pools Blamed For 95% Of Child Drownings

These are the findings of a study published today by the Spanish Association of Paediatricians, whose 59th annual conference opens in Las Palmas de gran Canaria tomorrow.

According to their spokesperson, Jorge Parise, accidents of this type increase considerably over the summer months and after traffic accidents, it is the leading cause death for children between the ages of one and four in Spain.

Data from 2007 show that 80 children drowned that year, most of them under five years of age.

73% of these accidents happen in private swimming pools, either in homes or in private clubs, where in many autonomous communities it is not obligatory to have a lifeguard on duty.

Parise also made special mention of tourist hotspots, the Balearic and Canary Islands, where children are often left unsupervised, especially after meal times, which “should never happen” if these “silent deaths” are to be avoided.

Traffic accidents still remain the leading cause of death for children and adolescents, despite the fact that it has dropped by 40% in

the case of children over the past few years.

Deaths by drowning or cycling deaths, however, have not seen a similar reduction, despite the fact that in many cases they could be avoided by fencing off pools to avoid young children falling in and making children wear helmets when out on their bikes.

Parise also made mention of alcohol, saying that it was often a factor in both traffic accidents and deaths by drowning among adolescents, and he stressed the need for greater education in the prevention of this type of tragedy.

“The government will approve the reform of the labour market reforms on Wednesday June 16 at our cabinet meeting, whether or not we get an agreement on it,” Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero told a news conference.

Zapatero in February unveiled the plan to reform the country’s strict labour market rules, measures the International Monetary Fund has said are urgently needed.

The reforms include allowing firms to cut costs by shortening workers’ hours but without making them redundant, as Germany has done, to reduce the use of temporary contracts, promote permanent part-time job contracts and encourage the hiring of unskilled youths.

The Socialist government had initially set May 31 as the deadline to reach an agreement but later said the unions and employers would continue meeting over the coming days.

Unions have threatened to call a general strike if the reforms are passed unilaterally by the government.

“Labour reform is necessary in order to help to contribute to creating more jobs, bringing down the employment rate and to ensure we have much more fixed permanent job contracts than temporary contracts,” said Zapatero.

Spain’s unemployment rate has soared to 20 percent -- the second highest in the European Union after Latvia -- since the collapse of a property bubble at the end of 2008.

Many economists blame the high jobless rate on Spain’s two-tiered labour market, which protects those on permanent contracts with generous severance pay guarantees while those on temporary contracts have few benefits and rights.

The IMF last warned that Spain’s economy needs “far-reaching and comprehensive reforms” to its rigid labour market and banking sector if it was to make headway on its own large debt and deficit problems.

Earlier Wednesday the labour ministry announced that the number of unemployed fell in May for the second consecutive month.

Zapatero hailed the figures as “excellent,” although admitted “there is a seasonal factor,” in that May is traditionally a good month for employment with the start of summer contracts.

He said Spain should “feel confident” about the economy “despite the difficulties, the serious difficulties in the financial markets,” he said.

“We see these difficulties on a day to day basis. We know that what is required is confidence to calm the troubled waters.”

Last month, parliament narrowly approved a new 15-billion-euro austerity package aimed at slashing the deficit and which includes a five-percent pay cut for civil servants and a freeze on pensions.

Those cuts are on top of a 50-billion-euro package announced in January as Madrid tries to put the country’s public finances in order and avoid following Greece into a debt crisis.

Zapatero’s government is trying to bring the overall public sector budget shortfall down to the eurozone limit of three percent of gross domestic product by 2013 from 11.2 percent last year.

The Spanish economy entered recession at the end of 2008 and only emerged with tepid 0.1 percent growth in the first quarter.

salads and by drinking fruit juices.

Outside, people are being reminded to stay in the shade wherever possible, use sunscreen, wear sunglasses and hats and wear light coloured, loose clothing and footwear that allows the skin the breathe.

At home, the advice is to

keep the shutters down whenever direct sunlight hits the windows and not to open them while the outside temperatures remain high.

Elderly people, those with chronic illnesses, those who work outside and children under four are more sensitive to high temperatures and need to take particular care in the current heatwave.

EU Steps Up Humanitarian Aid To Africa’s Sahel RegionMillions of people in Africa’s Sahel region are suffering a severe famine, made worse by erratic rainfall. The EU’s humanitarian aid

commissioner says the time to act is now, before the situation gets worse.European Union officials say as many as

million people are facing severe hunger in Africa’s Sahel region, the belt, which stretches across the grasslands, savannas and steppes of Northern Africa, linking the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Red Sea to the east.

The European Commission has warned the situation - particularly in Niger and Chad - is getting worse by the day.

The crisis in Africa’s Sahel region began with last year’s erratic rainfall, which brought a drastic decline in food production, reducing crops by 35 percent.

The European Commission has responded by stepping up its humanitarian assistance bringing the amount for this year to 54 million Euros.

The European commissioner responsible for humanitarian aid, Kristalina Georgieva, said

the help was meant to be preventative.

“There is a need to help countries in extraordinary circumstances, and hopefully act before a bad situation turns into a catastrophe,” Georgieva told reporters in Brussels last week.

For the Sahel region, climate change is not the only problem. Food prices have risen by 30 percent in the last five years.

The economic crisis has made matters even worse. Remittances have collapsed and incomes are drastically down.

The EU’s humanitarian aid commissioner said the population needed urgent help to survive the period until the next harvest in November.

As a first priority, the EU aid is to go towards preventing malnutrition in children and pregnant women.

The Commission also wants to identify the

people most at risk from famine, and make sure they can access health services, and work on early diagnoses.

The EU’s humanitarian aid commissioner said as much as food as possible would be sourced from the region, to stimulate the local farming economy- part of a broader long-term development strategy.

“The last couple of years we have gone up from almost a third to almost half of food aid being locally-purchased,” Georgieva said.

In addition, humanitarian efforts are to shift the focus to the nutritional quality of the food, rather than on sheer quantity.

“If you are led by just quantity, you may not do your job, because the food doesn’t do anything for improved nutrition,” the EU humanitarian aid commissioner said.

The European Union prides itself on being the world’s biggest aid donor, but some fear that of the current economic crisis could result in European governments backing away from aid pledges.

The EU is increasingly keen for emerging powers like China to become humanitarian

actors, rather than aid recipients.

Above all, the European Commission insists that it wants to prevent disasters from happening, and make sure aid is not just spent, but invested in the future.

Floods In Central Europe Claim At Least Two Lives

Two people have died and thousands evacuated from their homes as floods hit Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Croatia. Heavy rains have meant

floods across central Europe, killing at least two people in the Czech Republic and forcing thousands from their homes in Slovakia and Hungary.

Flooding in the past month in nearby Poland has caused hundreds of millions of euros in damage and killed 18 people.

Officials called a state of emergency Wednesday in the southeast of the Czech Republic. One man died when his car crashed after aquaplaning on a flooded street and a second body was found near a creek. Czech police were investigating whether the death was flood-related.

In Slovakia, police are

investigating the death of a 38-year-old man and searching for another man who fell into a river. Hundreds of people have been evacuated from their homes.

Flash floods hit neighboring Hungary, causing the evactuation of around 2,000 people in the northern town of Paszto. Railway services in the northeast have been suspended. In addition, over 700 soldiers from the Hungarian army have been mobilised to help build flood defenses.

Croatia has declared a state of emergency and sent hundreds of fire officers and military personnel to fight the floods. In the eastern part of the country, hundreds have been evacuated due to rising

river levels.

Officials in the Czech Republic said rising water levels around dams were also becoming a landslide threat.

“There is a real threat of overflowing of unregulated streams, reservoirs and the threat of landslides on people’s dwellings,” a spokesman in the region of Zlin, bordering Slovakia, said on the region’s website.

There are concerns in nearby Serbia and Bosnia the floods could soon affect them. Officials in Serbia have described the situation as “critical” and rescuers in Bosnia are using boats to help residents.

UK To Be Assertive Over Europe, Says Foreign Secretary

The new coalition government will be “assertive” in its dealings with Europe, Foreign Secretary William Hague has said.

Before the election some people believed a Conservative administration would be disengaged from Europe.

But Mr Hague told the BBC that other European countries would find the UK eager to be involved.

The foreign secretary’s comments came as he embarked on a visit to four European capitals.

Mr Hague said he would be urging Europe to act more decisively in international affairs, backing further

sanctions against Iran over its nuclear policy and wanting firm action in the Balkans where old animosities, particularly in Bosnia, threaten to re-surface.

In what some may regard as a strange twist, the foreign secretary is urging the European Union not to lose confidence as it battles with the crisis that threatens the euro. In particular Mr Hague does not want the EU to shy away from enlargement but to continue supporting the

membership ambitions of western Balkan countries and Turkey.

Another area where the British government will be assertive is in pushing for the single market to be extended into the service sector, he said. But the UK will not contribute to any bailing out of the eurozone and will not agree to measures that co-ordinate tax and spending policies.

Mr Hague’s tour takes in Paris, Rome, Berlin and Warsaw.

David Cameron To Deliver Warning On UK’s Budget Deficit

Prime Minister David Cameron is set to deliver a stark warning about the action needed to tackle Britain’s budget deficit and public debt.

He is expected to say the UK’s economic problems are “even worse than we thought” as he sets out why he believes “painful” cuts are necessary.

In a speech he will say how the £156bn deficit is tackled will affect “our whole way of life”.

The economy will dominate political debate ahead of the Budget on 22 June.

The Conservative-Lib Dem coalition government has already outlined plans for £6.2bn cuts this financial year - something the Lib Dems campaigned against before the election - saying action must be taken now to show Britain is serious about cutting the deficit.But Labour has argued that cuts too soon could jeopardise the economic recovery.

Labour leadership contender David Miliband accused the Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg of “hypocrisy”, while leadership rival Ed Balls said cuts in other European countries were “a really really dangerous and big mistake”.

But, according to pre-released extracts of a speech on Monday, Mr Cameron will say that the “massive deficit and growing debt” are the most urgent issues facing Britain.

He will say: “Today I want to set out for the country the big arguments that form the background to the inevitably painful times that lie ahead of us, why we need to do this, why the overall scale of the problem is even worse than we thought and why its potential consequences are therefore more critical than we feared.”

He will also say that, without tackling the deficit, confidence in the British economy will take a hit which could risk pushing up interest rates and increasingly taxes will be used to pay interest on the national debt, rather than being spent on public services.

Mr Cameron will say decisions are needed

with “enormous implications” which cannot be ducked or got wrong, adding: “I want this government to carry out Britain’s unavoidable deficit reduction plan in a way that strengthens and unites the country.”

He will say the government wants a “process to engage and involve the whole country in the difficult decisions that will have to be taken”.

Mr Cameron has already told the Sunday Times there was a “serious problem” with Labour’s forecast of 3% growth in 2011.

He indicated that there could be cuts to “welfare bills”, public sector pay and “the bureaucracy that has built up over the past decade”.

His Lib-Dem deputy, Nick Clegg, told the Observer the cuts would not mean a “repeat of the 1980s”, adding: “We’re going to do this differently.”

But he was attacked by David Miliband and Ed Balls for changing his position on cuts this year after agreeing to go into government with the Conservatives.

Mr Miliband told the BBC: “I think there’s breathtaking hypocrisy in the interview of Nick Clegg in the Observer today saying he’s going to have progressive cuts, cuts that he argued against while he was campaigning.”

He said what had been described as efficiency savings including axing jobs and training guarantees for unemployed youngsters: “That is not waste that is being cut. The danger is we are wasting lives and we are repeating the mistakes of the 1980s.”

Mr Balls said the Lib Dems also appeared to be breaking commitments on education spending implied during coalition talks with Labour: “They are even breaking the promises they made after the election, let alone before.”

Every week these lovely ladies meet at the Arches Café, El Oasis, Los Alcázares to indulge their passion for line dancing. Lin Chitty heads up the group and teaches beginners and intermediate standard.

‘I collect subs each week and, at the end of the year, we choose a charity to donate the money to’ says Lyn. ‘This year we chose the MABS Cancer Support Group, because they have given my husband such tremendous support throughout his recent illness. The hospital had lost all his records and, as our Spanish is limited, we were getting nowhere with the authorities, so I spoke to MABS. Elvira, their translator, was marvellous and was soon able to get everything sorted out so that he could start his much-needed treatment. Their volunteers were always on the end of a ‘phone whenever we needed them and I really don’t know what we would have done without MABS; I can’t thank them enough”.

MABS Translator, Elvira, Group Co-ordinator, Lyn Baines, and MABS volunteers were invited to receive the donation of 1300 Euros from Lin and her dancers at The Arches. ‘We’re absolutely delighted to receive this’ commented Lyn Baines. ‘We’ve had fantastic support from Ali, the owner of The Arches, who provides facilities for our training courses, and from Lin’s line dancers, who are so generous to local charities. It’s a real honour to receive this donation, which will enable us to continue helping those affected by cancer in this area. MABS is a registered charity, totally reliant on people like Lin and her dancers, whose donation will stay within the Murcia/Mar Menor region to help cover the costs of transporting people to and from hospital appointments and translating. We also provide equipment, such as orthopaedic beds, hoists, and wheelchairs to make life easier for those affected by cancer, and these all have to be stored and transported, so all donations are most welcome’.

A busy month that has seen the graveling of the perimeter roads completed. Almost two years of continuous work laying approx 25 tonnes of gravel a week. A tremendous effort by our team of aging volunteers. Where else could you get this exercise and work out for free.

The group have used a JCB on hire to re dig and clear the drainage ditches along the top side of D9-8 and 7 diverting the water from the hills into the storm drains that were cleared last year. This major project is now complete and will prevent thousands of gallons of water pouring down the streets as far away as D26 each time it rains.

A smaller but similar project is nearing completion on D 11.

A reporter and photographer from the London Times have visited the group to write an article about the group’s efforts.

A competition to design a WELCOME SIGN for the sector resulted in the following winning caption: CAMPOSOL D - THE COMMUNITY DETERMINED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. The next stage is to get a tile manufacturer to quote for its production.

The composting site has been a resounding success, so much so another pit, 12mtr x 6mtr x 2mtrs deep has had to be dug already. The trailer collection service of garden refuse to D sector residents is also being well used with over 20 collections last week alone.

Repairs to the irrigation system on the duel carriageway are now complete and a team has been formed to ensure that all the plants get watered on a regular basis throughout the summer.

The Rock & Roll dance was well attended despite the heavy rains that night and raised 611.42 € for funds. Despite the awful weather our supporters turned out with raincoats and brolley’s to enjoy a great evening dancing to the superb music of Martin Ross of “The Beagles” who tailored his performance to suit the era.

Many turned up dressed for the occasion and looked fantastic.

Dennis, of the “Original Teddy Boys”, did his Elvis tribute ably assisted by “Marilyn Monroe“ - everyone enjoyed the evening with the dance floor full most of the time and when it was time to go home the rain had stopped.

Bucket collections raised 2431.50€ so together with the dance profit of 611.42 € a gross total of 3042.92€ was raised. Out-goings for the month were 3270.85€.

In our modern society, even here in Spain where the system often seems stretched to near breaking point, we do rather tend to take the supply of good quality water, literally on tap, very much for granted.

Living where we do however, on top of a mountain, some miles from the nearest water main, depending entirely on the collection of

rainwater, we have a particular interest, some might say obsession with the weather, anxious that no rain cloud should pass us by.

And so it was that when on 28th May, the storm clouds gathered overhead, whilst most of our friends were complaining, we were out

there celebrating. But wasn’t it just typical. 12 weeks without a drop and suddenly 90 millimetres thrown at us, with a fair sprinkling of

hailstones, in just 60 minutes! Our collection systems couldn’t cope, so at least half that water was lost down the hillside. The hail literally sandblasted the paint from the walls and stripped leaves from many of the plants my wife had so lovingly been tending. And the shear volume of water thundering down the mountain wreaked havoc on

our Camino, which will need considerable work before being passable again. But we did get water – 20,000 litres of it, safely stored in our aljibe, which should, with care, see us through most of the coming

Summer.

And being so dependent on the weather certainly makes us value this precious resource far more than when we lived in Britain, and also makes much of the Bible a great deal more meaningful to us. For in Biblical times, as in much of the World today, water was a commodity to be valued, never wasted. So when Jesus spoke of his being the source of living water; that anyone who drank the

water he provided would never thirst again, then he necessarily had people’s full attention. A different type of water perhaps, but an

equally precious resource, in very short supply, God’s word and his love filling us are vital to our well-being.

unveiled: roManTic friends A lady friend who lived up to the term confided she once had a ‘romantic friend’; a man. it was a term i had never come across before and raised the question: Can a man and woman have a

romantic relationship without their ‘going to bed together’? the answer was yes and yes. she had shared a bed with her man friend

when on holiday but no intimacies beyond a goodnight cuddle were ever exchanged. they had done likewise when she occasionally stayed over at his apartment. Christine told me she would have been mortified had he ‘tried it on.’

Such was their closeness it was presumed that she and her man friend were partners when they were out together. this wasn’t surprising given their obvious and tactile affection for each other. i can believe it. As a signed up member of an on-line singles travelling club i had given some thought to my profile.

With financial prudence in mind i wrote that when travelling i had no qualms about sharing a hotel room but not my bed. there would be no presumption of intimacy or commitment. Sweet harmony! A surprising number of lady travellers were quite happy to share the experience, or in this case the lack of one.

Opening the debate further i discovered my friend’s experience was far from unique. Several lady acquaintances had shared holidays, trips, and sometimes hotel beds, but never nudge-nudge wink-wink intimacies with their

male friends. it worked; such close friendships often last a lifetime; few marriages do.

Admittedly it is a phenomenon far more common to lady friends than to those of the opposite sex. During Victorian times romantic friendships between women, and between men too, were tender, caring, affectionate and resonant. they were also socially acceptable, even encouraged.

According to Wikipedia the term ‘romantic friendship’ refers to a very endearing but non-sexual relationship between close friends. it involves a degree of physical intimacy and empathy beyond that which is commonly accepted; for example holding hands, cuddling, and yes, sharing a bed. I really hate it when you wish someone good luck, and back comes the smug answer; “you make your own luck in life”. Sure you can be really organised, smart and ambitious, and all these things will help, but I maintain that there are some people who are just born lucky and have an invisible horseshoe carved into their forehead, or seem to have access to the Philosophers Stone and capable of turning base metal into gold. you know the ones.

Whatever they do in life, they always seem to land on their feet, or as my old dad used to say, “ If they fell down the toilet, they would come out with a bunch of roses and a box of Black Magic”. not very subtle my dad.

Then conversely there are those of us who always drop the bread, butter side down. The ones who suddenly realise that the ITv on their car is overdue, and even though they have never been pulled over by the Guardia in all their years in Spain, they get stopped on their way to the test centre.

There is good luck and bad luck - of course there is! Why some have far more than their fair share of either however, is a mystery.

It’s the same with poise, or to put it another way, no poise. I have friends who are so butter-fingered, that you would never dream of getting out the best crystal if they come round for drinks. you just know that at some point in the proceedings something will get spilt, dropped or knocked over. It’s as inevitable as seeing Jordan’s chest splashed across the front pages at least twice a week.

But like luck, there are

things that happen around these people that they apparently have no contact with or influence over. They just have to be present for situations to occur.

ray, a friend from my younger days, was one of those people. For some inexplicable reason, he only had to go near young ladies for them to suddenly screech in dismay as a run appeared in their tights. It was a regular phenomenon, happening time and time again. he was responsible for more ladders than George Wimpey.

One night travelling home in a heavy storm in his Ford Anglia, both wipers, as if by mutual consent, shot off into the night, leaving two little metal spikes eeek eeeking back and forth across the bottom of his windscreen.

he was a poltergeist in human form, with things, falling over and going bump in the night whenever he was around. If he were to be given a new Airbus A380 for Christmas, he would break it by Boxing day!

A one-time girlfriend was also a train-crash on legs, and would do silly things like cleaning out her shower cubicle fully dressed, then turning it on to sluice down, forgetting to exit first.

We were enjoying the ride along on Bermuda’s South Shore one day, on my shiny honda. Penny was wearing chunky, platform soled shoes, when my bike came to a dead stop, unlike myself who continued on in the general direction of Europe. She had managed to stick one of her heels into the back wheel, which was suddenly transformed into one of the more obscure letters of the Greek alphabet.

you occasionally find an individual who is the strange combination of the two things: they are constantly falling over their own feet, but possess some mystical rabbit’s foot of powerful luck.

We had one at school. he was very bright, but always injuring himself in PE and games; a geek supreme and a fully paid up anorak . . . he would take girls behind the bike sheds and help them with their maths!

But then later in life he became incredibly successful, and almost literally everything he touched turned to double platinum. But apparently he still dances like a camel and is as accident prone as ever.

So please don’t give me all that guff about making my own luck, or tell me to be careful with that precious vase on your sideboard. If I’m clumsy enough to drop it, put it down to bad luck.

A bus company in China has launched a new ‘drive safely’ campaign - by hanging big bowls of water next to their drivers.

The Longxiang Public Bus Company in Changsha, Hunan province, says drivers must drive gently to avoid spilling any water.

Bus drivers are expected to ensure the bowls are still full when they finish their shift. And the company

warns drivers that CCTV footage will be studied to make sure they do not top up the bowls with water.

“Passengers often complain that sudden braking and bad driving makes them really uncomfortable on the buses,” said a spokesman of the company.

“Hanging bowls of water in the driver’s cab will discourage them from making any jolting starts, sudden braking or bad turns.”

‘WATER’ WAy TO SLOW DOWN BUS DRIVERS

It is fitting that Dennis Hopper’s last public appearance was when he was awarded his pavement star in the hollywood Walk of fame in march. fitting but astonishing, too, that it took so long for his huge contribution to filmmaking, which began in the Fifties, to be recognised by that particular tinseltown institution. Drew Barrymore (b. 1975) got hers six years ago!

hopper, who died of cancer on 29th may at the age of 74, was one of the great movie mavericks, a terrific character and terrific character actor. He had an unsettling, often menacing air about him on-screen, and it always seemed that he brought something of his eventful private life to his roles. he had problems with alcohol and drugs, and was married and divorced five times.

the mantle of hell-raiser sat easily on his shoulders. after some early success, he acquired a reputation for being difficult to work with and, for about a decade, was effectively ostracised by the industry. His first film role came in 1954 with Johnny Guitar, to be followed a year later by rebel Without a cause, which starred that icon of disaffected youth, james Dean.

After a series of small parts in both television and film, he established his name for ever with the era-defining Easy Rider (1969), the film that he directed and, with Peter Fonda, wrote and starred in. their story of a couple of hippy drop-outs riding across the vast open spaces of america on motorbikes was one of the first cult movies and marked a daring breakaway from the conventions of filmmaking. It’s said that Fonda’s movie-legend father, henry, was deeply unsettled by it because it had no discernible plot, backstory - or meaning. But that was the new direction film was taking, and, as everything changed in the seventies, hopper could fairly be regarded as one of the angry young men who had helped to spark the revolution.

Among the new generation of filmmakers was Francis ford coppola, who followed his godfather diptych with the monumental vietnam-war movie apocalypse now (1979), which featured hopper in one of his most memorable roles as a deranged photographer, his brains fried by who-knows-what in the depths of the jungle.

however, his maddest and scariest onscreen persona came seven years later in Blue velvet, David Lynch’s peek into the darker corners

of suburbia, in which hopper plays the deeply disturbing frank

Booth, who inhales nitrous oxide while inflicting sexual degradation on

isabella rossellini.

hopper’s performance had an unnerving authenticity that made you wonder what real-life weirdness he was drawing on.

Hopper was also a prolific photographer, painter, and sculptor. his painting style ranges from abstract impressionism to photorealism and often includes references to his cinematic work and to other artists. hopper eventually turned to photography in the 1960s with a camera bought for him by his first wife, Brooke Hayward. During this period he created the cover art for the ike & tina turner single river Deep – mountain High (released in 1966); he became a prolific photographer - noted writer Terry Southern profiled Hopper in Better Homes and gardens magazine as an up and coming photographer “to watch” in the mid 1960s.

hopper was more than just an actor/director. he was also a producer, screenwriter, photographer, painter and art collector who knew or worked with almost every significant American artist of the second half of the 20th century. the ‘pavement star’ should have been awarded sooner!

Sterling regained some ground this morning after Nationwide house price data showed a better than expected rise with 0.5% month on month and 9.8% year on year gains respectively. Yesterday’s announcement that prudential had formally abandoned its takeover of AIA led to a strong rally in Sterling as banks behind the deal rushed to convert the Dollars that had been purchased to completed the deal back into Sterling. This pushed Cable to a 3 week high although it has now softened a little. Today’s Services PMI number, which measures the activity levels of purchasing manager in the services sector came in at 55.4, slightly less than expected but still a bullish figure.

The Dollar opened slightly firmer today on rumours that the Iran Central Bank began the process to reduce euro reserves from 55% to 20-25% and convert them to Dollars and gold. The first stage of sales has started which involves selling of 15b euros and is expected to be completed by September 22. The dollar also found some support from upbeat U.S data, including numbers released yesterday showed pending sales of previously owned homes topping expectations. Tomorrows U.S payroll figures will be closely watched and are expected to show 513,000 jobs were added to the economy in May, which could give the greenback a boost and bolster expectations that the federal Reserve will be the first to raise rates.

Standard and Poors, Moodys and Fitch are all being scrutinised by European leaders who are blaming the credit rating agencies for aggravating Greece’s problems through sovereign downgrades. plans unveiled in Brussels yesterday showed that

there may be a new European supervisory body with the power to hand out fines to countries that fall short of expectations. However questions are already being asked about how credible this new body can be when it is reviewing sovereign debt of nations whilst at the same time being financed by the same sovereign nations.

This follows on from Wednesday worrying signs that the euro zone debt crisis may be spreading to the banking system. Spain’s second largest savings bank Caja Madrid is understood to have sought a bailout package worth €3 billion from a government rescue fund.

This is a double hammer for the bank who only last week had its rating placed on Credit Watch negative by Standard & poor’s, which expects pressure on profits this year - further bad news for the Bank of Spain as they push for mergers amongst the smaller saving banks.

It was a mix bag of European data yesterday with EU statistics estimated that 10.1% of EU citizens were unemployed and increase of 0.1% month on month. However Germany indicated positive unemployment data falling from 7.8% to 7.7%. furthermore boosts in export as a result of the weaker Euro drove the positive GDp growth in Germany, France and Spain for the first quarter of the year.

in spain; barbecues, picnics and swimming in the mediterranean! But don’t neglect your garden while you enjoy yourself! your plants need a little tLc with plenty of water.

Beetroot, carrots, cauliflower and cabbages, also melons, courgettes, marrows, and all gourds are best watered at ground level so use a fine spray low down, don’t blast them with the hose pipe.

all around our area, people are having those “sceptic” tanks fitted so I’m toying with the idea of having an extra holding tank fitted where all the water gets filtered and can be used to water the garden. as my neighbour says, we’ve paid for the water once so we might as well use it twice.

snails are rampant this year so keep picking them off and dropping them in a jar of salt water. it’s no good throwing them over the

fence as one friend does because they will find their way back.

June…Time to sow a few seeds each week of carrots, cabbage, cauliflower, French beans,

and silver beet (swiss chard), this will give you a constant supply through the summer. Don’t forget that all of these things can be used raw in salads! tomato and pepper plugs are in the markets, also runner bean plugs which should climb quicker than jack’s if planted now.

one early morning this month, after the daily watering, give your plants a mulch of old compost or straw and give them the occasional liquid feed for best results. make sure the young tender ones have some shade in the heat of the day.

Well, i’m ready to dip my feet in the pool and have a cool drink, there won’t be much time next month when the grandchildren arrive.

AnsWer: Citrus are renowned for sulking

when they are transplanted. this applies whether they are 2 years old or 15 years. you may find that you see many of your

tiny fruit drop to the ground around now and this is nature’s way of thinning, nothing to be concerned about. It is worsened by hot weather now, combined with drying winds. now is a good time to fertilise your

citrus unless they are less than a year old, in which case wait until next year. the garden centres all over sell citrus fertiliser but tomato feed with a supplement of iron and trace elements will do, especially if leaves are yellowing. Make sure you water any fertiliser in well. the best method is to make the usual ‘saucer’ around the bottom of the tree, the width of the widest branch, scatter the feed on the ground and flood the saucer. Citrus prefer deep watering

(enough to water down to about 2 -3 feet). For young or newly planted trees this needs to be done about once a week, for any trees older than about 4 years a good dousing once a fortnight is about right. the little black beetle with tiny white

dots on it has been munching my citrus flowers and I have sprayed the trees with Aceite de neem. It seems to have done the trick and I am picking off fewer and fewer of them now. If you are considering cutting any

branches be aware that this is not a good time to prune any citrus trees as the exposed branch may burn in the strong sunlight. Leave any cutting back until next february or march. If you bear all this in mind you may

be enjoying your own freshly squeezed orange juice for breakfast or even slicing your own lemons into a G&t this autumn!

hearing dogs change lives, alerting their deaf owners to sounds that we take for granted, providing greater independence, confidence and security. most are selected from rescue centres or donated as unwanted pets.

the hearing dogs for deaf people association was launched at the crufts dog show in 1982 and have since trained and placed over 1,400 dogs to alert deaf people to specific sounds, whether in the home, workplace or public buildings. the aim of ‘hearing dog week 2010’ is to raise awareness of the difference a trained hearing dog can make to the life of a deaf person.

learning to live with deafness can be a devastating experience. many people say they lost their sense of security, confidence and independence when they lost their hearing. deafness is an invisible disability and can lead to isolation and loneliness as people

withdraw, finding it increasingly hard to communicate.

owning a hearing dog changes a deaf person’s life on many levels, offering a practical alternative to technical equipment – particularly for those deaf people who find such equipment restricting – with the added benefit of giving the recipient increased independence, greater confidence, companionship and a feeling of security.

the dogs themselves vary from the largest, scruffiest mongrel to the smallest pedigree but they are all easily recognisable by their distinctive jackets and lead slips.

around 70% of hearing dogs are selected from rescue centres, offering safe and loving homes to otherwise unwanted dogs.

the principles of training dogs for any given task are straightforward: break the task down into easily achievable steps and encourage the dog to make

gradual progress, rewarding him or her when he gets it right. all hearing dogs are trained by forming positive associations with sounds, using food, praise or toys as rewards. these are sounds that hearing people often take for granted such as: alarm clock, cooker timer, doorbell and telephone. on hearing any of these sounds, a hearing dog will seek out his deaf recipient and touch them with a paw. when the recipient asks “what is it?” the hearing dog will lead them to the source of the sound.

a hearing dog is also trained to alert to danger sounds such as: smoke alarm, fire alarm, carbon monoxide alarm and a burglar alarm. a hearing dog will alert his recipient to these danger or emergency sounds by, again, touching with his paw, and then lying down in a special ‘alert signal’ to indicate danger. the average hearing dog is a small,

m i x e d - b r e e d dog – they do not need to be physically large to keep an ever-open ear for a sound and run to tell their deaf owner about it by touching them with their paw – but they do need to be alert and full of enthusiasm, sociable and relaxed in all public situations and, of course, they need to have received many weeks of careful and consistent training to ensure that they know the correct way to behave.

Stop exercising if your pet appears to be struggling, is panting heavily, or quickly stops panting. take water along to offer your pet during and after exercising, but don’t allow heavily panting dogs to take in too much water too fast, as this may result in bloating.

Be aware of heatstroke symptoms: panting (or sudden cessation of panting), salivating, vomiting, reddened gums and tongue, anxiety, weakness, racing heartbeat, and collapsing.

immediately move any pet exhibiting heatstroke symptoms to a cool, shady spot, and slowly reduce the animal’s temperature by placing its body (not its head) in cool water wrapping the pet in cool, wet towels. then take it to a vet so that other supportive measures may be undertaken, such as the administration of intravenous fluids (to combat dehydration) and oxygen (to prevent brain damage).

Britain’s Got Talent and The Thick Of It were among the victors at this year’s British

Academy Television Awards.The ITV1 talent show won its first ever BAFTA in the ‘Entertainment Programme’

category, while judge Simon Cowell took home the Academy’s Special Award in recognition

for his outstanding contribution to the entertainment industry.

The Thick Of It received the ‘Situation Comedy’ award, with Peter Capaldi winning

‘Male Performance In A Comedy Role’ for his portrayal of spin doctor Malcolm Tucker

in the BBC political satire. Co-star Rebecca Front also won the accolade of best ‘Female

Performance In A Comedy Role’.Other winners included Julie Walters, who received her sixth BAFTA in the ‘Leading

Actress’ category for her performance in Channel 4’s Mo, while Kenneth Branagh took

home the ‘Leading Actor’ gong for playing the title role in Wallander.

Matthew Macfadyen and Rebecca Hall each claimed their first awards as ‘Supporting

Actor’ and ‘Supporting Actress’ respectively, with Macfadyen winning for Criminal Justice

and Hall for her performance in serial killer drama Red Riding 1974.

Ant & Dec also won in the ‘Entertainment Performance’ category as hosts of I’m A

Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!, while EastEnders was judged the best ‘Continuing

Drama’, the soap’s first BAFTA in four years.

Finally, the Academy’s Fellowship award was given to former South Bank Show host Lord

simply place a colander over a pan of boiling water, tip prepared veg in and put a lid over the top for 10-12 mins.

The veg will be cooked and crunchy but be careful as the colander will be hot!

METHODPreheat your oven at 350 F (180 C).Grease a muffin pan (for 6). In each mould, place 2 to 3 layers of filo pastry cut to match the size of the mould and each time, brush the filo pastry with olive oil.Wash the spinach and cut it coarsely. Crumble the cheese.

Mix together the spinach, cheese, pecans and red currants. Divide between each mould.Beat together the eggs, egg yolks and the cream.Season with pepper and salt. Pour over the vegetables.Place in the oven for about 25 mins.Check regularly as the filo pastry cooks quickly and you do not want it to burn!

Season the chicken with salt and pepper. Place in large zip-lock bag and set aside. Slice the fresh strawberries lengthwise and place in a small mixing bowl. Toss with 1 tablespoon of sugar and balsamic vinegar with the strawberries until evenly coated.Set aside and allow to rest for at least 2 minutes.Add the heavy whipping cream to a chilled mixing

bowl. Whip the cream on high for 1 minute with a mixer that is fitted with a whisk attachment.Slowly add the remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar and continue to whip until soft peaks form.Slice the biscuits in half lengthwise and place the bottoms on a plate.Evenly spoon the strawberry mixture on top of each biscuit.Spoon a dollop of whipped cream onto of the strawberries and then place the biscuit top on the side.Finish with a final dollop of whipped cream.Serves 4 – 6 people depending on the size of the portion.

Asthma Risk ‘Linked To Burgers’Children who eat a Mediterranean diet have a lower risk of developing asthma, but eating three or more burgers a week is linked to a higher risk, research suggests.Researchers looked at 50,000 children from 20

countries and have revealed that eating fruit, vegetables and fish appeared to protect against asthma. But they said eating burgers could be linked to other unhealthy habits, which may be the real trigger factor.

The study looked at the habits of children in both wealthy and poorer countries between 1995 and 2005. Parents were asked about their children’s diets, and whether they had ever been diagnosed with asthma or had suffered wheezing. The effects of their diet seemed to vary depending on where they lived.

Fruit and vegetables appeared to be more protective in less affluent parts of the world, while eating lots of fish was more helpful in richer countries.

Eating at least three burgers a week was linked to a greater risk of asthma and wheezing, but only in wealthier countries.

Dr Gabriele Nagel, one of the authors, said this may be because asthma is a collection of symptoms rather than a single condition, and different things may trigger it in different parts of the

world: “This gives us more understanding of how asthma affects different people, and its effects in developing as well as developed countries,” she said.

The paper suggested that a diet rich in fruit and vegetables may be helpful because of the protective effects of antioxidants and vitamin C.

High levels of unhealthy fats in burgers could increase the risk of asthma. However, the authors said children who ate several burgers a week were likely to have other unhealthy lifestyle habits as well.

The study did not adjust for levels of obesity, yet children’s weight can have a significant influence on asthma symptoms.

Dr Elaine Vickers, research relations manager at Asthma UK, said: “Previous studies have shown that a Mediterranean-style diet rich in fruit and vegetables can help to reduce a child’s risk of developing asthma symptoms. Our advice to parents is therefore to

ensure that children eat a healthy, balanced diet and also

get plenty of exercise.”

HIT THE STAGE IN ALBIR LAST THURSDAY NIGHT. AGAIN HISTORY HAPPENED IN ONE OF THE BEST AND HOTTEST

JAzz CLUBS ON THE COAST, ‘BLUEMOON’.

Coldly arrived from Italy, some jazz friends and BlueMoon first welcomed him with a rich dinner at the fantastic Las Dunas in Albir. After this special moment, he pulled the soundcheck which already promised to be an other hot and rare concert.

The packed jazzclub got more than they expected or dreamed of as Maestro Beltrami brought them Jazzalicious Nu, not any standards, mainstream or classics, no coventional and conformistic Jazz, nothing of this at all.

He gave the audience Big Jazz Art, with the open, raw and real thing. Just where jazz is all about, with this magic the Italian guitar giant burned the stage. With his smooth Cool Nu and Hard Bop Nu Jazz sounds, Beltrami gave a new and different perspective in the jazz world when he performed at Montreux with many other Jazz legends. His style and sound are an acoustic reflection of vision that has put him in 2006 under the greatest names of best guitar players -composers in the global jazz scene. At the BlueMoon Mr. Beltrami treated the Costa Blanca with his sublime jazz art on universal level Accompanied by Miguel Benito (percussion), Toño Miguel (double bass) and Alvaro Perez(sax) the musical poetry kept on flowing.

During this great concert and the Jazz Session after, the atmosphere and vibes where unbelievable moving and touching. With the many present top musicians Beltrami leaded a rollin’ jam to a spectacular planet…Then the worst happened, the electrity went off. But what seemed to become a nightmare became an unforgetable scene. The candles were lighted, the acoustic music instruments appeared and one of the greatest voices on the Costa Blanca was luckely in the house who nicely joined in. First the genius jazz pöet Rafetta set in with his swinging jazz lyrics to thank the electricity company. He also prepared the entrance of the warm jazz singer Conchita. This magical jam intermezzo took place with Pepe Bornay (contra Bass) , Cristina Roco ( spanish guitar), Fercho (sax) and Emilio Mora (percussion) which made this evening more unique then it already was.

Beltrami opend his guitar case for a second time and played a hot jazz session with no one less then Lolo Garcia (sax) of the Jazz Messengers Project, the great pianist Roberto Seoane, and virtuos Juamba (drum). Out of the blue Beltrami and Lolo Garcia joined their spectacular moment and jammed a fantastic sax and guitar duet that could last forever. More than once, this night was the jazz scene were you hoped for and were glad you didn’t missed it. At 4:30am, the last Jazz note faded away to connect with the next steamin’ event and jazz dream at the BlueMoon JazzClub. The experiences & conversations in the BlueMoon went on for hours and than, more than satisfied the jazz lovers went homewards. They strolled home and couldn’t wait ‘till next time in the magical ‘BlueMoon’. The credo of this last happening must have been:… ‘You never know where Jazz can go…!’

APAH currently has six of those puppies, and is looking for loving homes for them all. There are four males and two females and they have all had their puppy vaccinations. To arrange to

APAH has lots of kittens including pure blacks, English blues, tabbies, white ones and gingers! Some were

taken in with their mother, some were left in bags, others were thrown

over the Cattery gate and left for volunteers to find. One little black

and white female kitten was rescued with one of her tiny legs broken, but she is making a good recovery. All of them have

There are many important issues to consider when you first get a puppy or kitten - vaccination, diet, worming, training, pet insurance etc. These are all factors that should be addressed within the first three to four weeks of acquiring your new pet.

The other major decision you will have to take is whether or not to get your pet neutered. This is often ignored or forgotten about by many owners since it is not something that is done routinely until your pet is a little older. There are a lot of popular misconceptions surrounding the neutering of both cats and dogs and it is important that you, as an owner, are aware of the correct information.

Neutering female dogs (spaying) should be encouraged for all pets not intended for breeding. The main reasons for this

are to prevent the occurrence of the following problems:Pyometra - A potentially fatal infection of the uterusFalse Pregnancy - A condition which usually requires veterinary

treatmentMammary Cancer - Occurs later in life in unspayed bitches

or those spayed after their second season. It is important from this point of view to get your bitch neutered before her second season

Oestrus - Your bitch will come ‘into season’ once or twice yearly if not spayed. This will attract male dogs, encourage your bitch to escape to seek male attention and result in her producing a bloody discharge for several days at least.

Unwanted Pregnancy - Bitches do not need a litter prior to spaying and the operation is unlikely to affect their nature. It is true that some bitches put on weight after neutering but this is easy to control with dietary manipulation and your veterinary practice will be able to give you advice here if necessary. Neutering your bitch is major, if routine, surgery and involves removing both ovaries and part of the uterus under general anaesthesia.

Neutering male dogs (castration) is beneficial in those not required for breeding in order to help prevent the following problems:

Testicular Cancer - some forms of which are malignantPerineal Hernias - requires major reconstructive surgeryProstate Problems - e.g. infection, benign enlargement and cystsPerianal Adenomas - tumours around the anus that often require surgeryBehavioural Problems e.g. aggression, roaming, urine marking, mounting behaviourAs with a bitch, castration is unlikely to affect your dog’s personality and any increase in weight should

be easy to control with the correct advice. Castration involves removal of both testicles under general anaesthesia and is not as long an operation as spaying a bitch.

Female cats (queens) should be kept indoors at all times until neutered at around six months of age. Spaying your queen will prevent risk of pyometra (womb infection), reduce the risk of mammary cancer and stop your cat coming ‘into season’ which would attract unwanted attention from male cats. The surgery is done under general anaesthesia and involves removal of both ovaries and the uterus. Every year veterinary practices and charity organisations are inundated with kittens from unwanted litters - the only way to prevent this is to spay your cat.

Male cats (toms) are also neutered at around six months of age in order to reduce the risks of them spraying urine in the house and becoming aggressive to other cats. Entire male cats tend to roam over large areas with the result that they are more likely to become involved in cat fights or road traffic accidents. Cat castration is done under general anaesthesia and both testicles are removed.

Let’s not forget about rabbits! Male and female rabbits are usually neutered at around six months of age under general anaesthesia. Female rabbits can get pregnant as early as 16 weeks of age so it is important to get rabbits sexed when you get them and keep males and females separate until neutered. Around 50% of female rabbits over the age of four will develop uterine carcinoma (cancer of the womb) so it is of particular importance to spay females young. Rabbit neutering is also done under general anaesthesia and the procedures are similar to those in cats and dogs.


It looks at long last that the Gary McKinnon case may be reaching, what some would consider, a satisfactory conclusion, with the intercession of the new Home Secretary, Theresa May.

It’s hard to believe that this case has now been ongoing for eight years, and if our newspapers are to be believed, the vast majority of British people are wholly behind the efforts to stop Gary’s extradition to the United States. But is that true, and if so is it for the right reasons? Let’s look at what he is actually accused of.

In 2001 and 2001 he reportedly hacked into 97 US Army; Navy; Department of Defence; Air Force and NASA systems, deleting files and causing shut-downs constituting major security problems. Although he does not contest the hacking accusation, Gary vigorously denies causing damage, and has accused the US authorities of assessing the cost of rectifying the problems of $800,000, as a means to strengthen their extradition demand. He does however admit to leaving one threatening message on one computer, which read as follows:

“US foreign policy is akin to government-sponsored terrorism these days? It was not a mistake that there was a huge security stand-down on September 11 last year...I am SOLO. I will continue to disrupt at the highest levels.”

The thrust of the case by Gary’s supporters is that he suffers with the condition, Aspergers Syndrome, and therefore should not be exradited on medical grounds.

Now I am not a medical person, but my understanding is that one feature characteristic of Aspergers is a repetitive routine or intense preoccupation with a subject. This is given strength by his obsession with UFO’s and his belief that there has been an organised cover-up by the US authorities, his stated motive for hacking into their systems. Although his threatening message left on that single computer terminal seems to contradict this.

It should be noted that his condition was only diagnosed after three unsuccessful appeals against his extradition. Whilst I am not suggesting that this was a last gasp effort to halt the process or trivialise the illness in any way, I have to ask the question: does Aspergers take away the

ability of the individual to distinguish right from wrong?

I have a liking for chocolate, which some might interpret as a compulsion, but it would be no defence if I broke into someone’s home in order to steal their stash of Cadbury’s Dairy Milk. I would be convicted of burglary and rightly so.

Here we have an obviously intelligent young man, who has become an expert in hacking into computer systems at the highest level, and has done so on an industrial scale. He does not deny it, indeed he has stated that he is prepared to be tried for his actions in Britain. But is it a defence to say that he did what he did merely to locate files relating to UFO cover-ups by the establishment? Does it really matter why he did it, when the results of what he did caused major and potentially disastrous security breaches?

There is of course a deeper issue here for many people, and that is the lop-sided and patently unfair extradition agreements between our country and the United States. We are routinely expected to act upon US requests for extradition of suspected criminals including ‘white collar’ crime, whilst the American authorities equally routinely refuse reciprocal British requests. This clearly has to be addressed by the new UK administration and amended PDQ, and on this basis alone I believe Gary McKinnon’s extradition should be halted. Special relationships are only special, if there is equality of respect from both sides. It’s high time that someone gave America a severe ear bending and redefined the terms of our partnership on all levels.

In the meantime, we await further developments with renewed optimism, but let’s not forget that this young man should not be feted as some sort of latter day Robin Hood figure. At best he was unable to resist his compulsion due to his illness – at worst he is an individual who used his specialist knowledge in a way that could have caused untold harm to all of us.

Easyjet To Trial Volcanic Ash Detection System

It involves infra-red technology that allows pilots to see the damaging particles up to 62 miles ahead.

The theory is that a pilot can then change course and continue to fly safely.

It has the support of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), the body that decides whether it is safe to fly through ash in uk airspace.

The CAA said it was happy an airline appeared to have found a technical solution, and, although it was not endorsing the product, it would do what it could to help certification.

Earlier this year, many air passengers had their travel plans wrecked when airlines had to scrap thousands of flights due to the Icelandic volcanic ash problem. The CAA faced criticism from some airlines, who argued that the body had been overly cautious.

Easyjet chief executive, Andy harrison, said: “This pioneering technology is the silver bullet that will make large-scale ash disruption history.”

The new system, called Airborne volcanic Object Identifier and detector (Avoid), will be tested by Airbus on behalf of Easyjet

within the next two months.Easyjet, which is spending £1m ($1.47m)

on the system, says it is happy for rivals to share its knowledge.

Mr harrison, said: “What we don’t want to do is to gain a commercial advantage over other airlines so we can fly and they can’t. We are not going to exclude people from this technology.”

Easyjet said the volcanic ash disruption had cost it up to £75m. Its passenger figures for last month, showed 215,000 of its own passengers had their travel plans disrupted because of volcanic ash and 1,600 flights were cancelled.

The average load factor of the plane, an important measure of airline efficiency, was 85.8% compared with 83.5% in May 2009.

Easyjet has unveiled a system that it says will allow airlines to safely fly around ash clouds.

Humpback wHales form friendsHips tHat last years

humpback whales form lasting bonds, the first baleen whales known to do so.

individual female humpbacks reunite each summer to feed and swim alongside one another in the gulf of st Lawrence, off canada, scientists have found. The finding raises the possibility that commercial whaling may have broken apart social groups of whales.

Dr christian ramp and colleagues of the mingan island cetacean study group based in st Lambert, canada have been studying whales in the gulf of st Lawrence since 1997. together with researchers from germany and sweden, the scientists are recording the movements of baleen whales including blue, fin, minke and humpback whales, adding to a set of data that stretches back 30 years.

Baleen whales possess huge baleen plates in their mouths, which they use to filter out small prey such as krill and plankton from the water. using photographic identification techniques, the researchers can spot which individual whales appear from one year to the next. During this study, they have found that the same humpback whales reunite each year.

having spent the rest of the year

apart migrating and breeding, individual humpbacks somehow find each other again in the open ocean each summer, spending the season feeding together. the longest recorded friendships lasted six years, and always occurred between similar-aged females, and never between females and males.

“i was very surprised by the prolonged duration,” Dr ramp commented. “i was expecting stable associations within one season, not beyond. i was particularly surprised by the fact that only females form these bonds, especially females of similar age.”

the discovery has puzzled the researchers who made it. there is some evidence that humpbacks in alaska form stable groups to feed on herring, and female right whales are thought to be more gregarious than males.

however, until now, baleen whales have not been known to reestablish bonds between individuals from one year to the next.

forming such friendships clearly benefited the female humpbacks, as those that had the most stable and long-lasting associations gave

birth to the most calves.Dr ramp and his colleagues

suspect that the whales form bonds to improve their feeding efficiency each year.

“staying together for a prolonged period of time requires a constant effort. that means that they feed together, but likely also rest together. so an individual is adapting its behaviour to another one.”

How the whales find each other each summer is also an enigma.

“it’s an excellent question and i would like to know the answer,” says Dr ramp. “Where do they meet, and how do they recognise each other?”

he suspects the whales use sound to find and recognise other individuals.

Dr ramp speculates that humpback whales associating with one another may have made it easier for them to be caught in the past by commercial whalers. as yet, there is no evidence to support this. But if that did occur, it would also mean that whaling may have removed social groups

inspiration from raging bull’s past models

Could this be the model to take on the mantle of the Murciélago? It is low-slung, outrageously wide and exaggerated in every way possible – and there could be only one badge that belongs on the bonnet: Lamborghini.

Every Lambo needs a bull theme, and this supercar design study is named after the ancient Greek city, Cnossus (aka knossos) – home to the legendary half-man, half-bull Minotaur. It’s the work of russian victor Filipchenko and Portugese nelson Simoes, both students at Italy’s prestigious Scuola Politecnica di design.

Presenting a bold vision of what the firm’s future flagship could look like, the concept takes inspiration from Lamborghini models past and present, including the Countach and reventón.

It boasts many classic cues such as telephone-dial wheels lifted from the Countach, scissor doors and gaping air intakes in front of the rear wheelarch. At the rear, the thin strip of LEd lights with inverted arrows at the end is a clear nod towards the reventón’s jet-fighter theme, while the diffuser looks more like something you’d find on a Le Mans prototype racer than a road car.

The timing of the design is poignant. An all-new v12 Murciélago successor – an artist’s impression of which we featured on the cover of Issue 1,109 – is set to break cover later this year.

Sticking with the supersports theme, the vW kai-nalu Concept takes a similarly radical approach. The work of Josep Ferriol of Spain’s universidad Politécnica de valencia, it has a ‘rolling wave’ theme seen in its smooth, flowing roof, moulded from one piece of glass.

The transparent top gives a clear view of the twin electric motors. One is at the front, one is at the back – a layout which helps to distribute weight evenly. And the unusual wheel design features a vW badge that’s balanced to stay upright.

history. The sole remaining Aston Martin dB5 which starred alongside Sean Connery in Thunderball and Goldfinger is set to go under the hammer at an exclusive auction to be held in london on 27th october.

Featuring the famous numberplate FMP 7B, the Aston is one of two built for James Bond’s on-screen appearances, and features the full suite of modifications fit for an international secret agent. The dB5 has machine guns, a bullet-proof shield, revolving number plates, an oil slick sprayer and, of course, a passenger ejector seat.

The Aston was bought from the factory in 1969 by American radio broadcaster Jerry lee. He paid $12,000 (£8,275) for the car, which he has kept in his collection ever since. It is due to be sold by rM Auctions at its Automobiles of london sale, and is expected to sell for at least £3.5million. The proceeds will be donated to The Jerry lee Foundation which is a national initiative dedicated to solving social problems associated with poverty, with an emphasis on crime prevention.

promotion is still very much on the cards for cartagena. ok, with only 2 games remaining, and 2 points adrift from the last automatic slot, the odds have been drastically reduced, but as jimmy Greaves once famously said - “it’s a funny old game saint!!”. following the weekends games, real sociadad are now promoted, leaving 4 teams fighting for 2 remaining places. the good news is that 2nd place levante, visit 3rd place real Betis on the last day of the season, meaning that if cartagena can win next weeks match at recreativo huelva, then their final game at home to lowly albacete will be massive.

a capacity 15,000 crowd gathered inside cartagonova stadium, knowing full well that a defeat for either side would almost certainly mean that their promotion dream would be over for another season. polica local escorted a dozen or so hercules supporters coaches into the city (i should know, as i was stuck behind them!!), as they completed the relatively short journey from alicante. within 5 mins, these blue and white hordes would have been celebrating their team opening the scoring, had it not been for a glaring miss by danciulescu - shooting wide from close range, with the goal at his

mercy. although end to end stuff, the next notable incidents (highly controversial at that) didn’t arrive till midway through the half. ref david torres controlled this match quintessentially, except for denying 2 clear cut penalties inside a minute. toche was not only firmly pushed off the ball inside the area, but on trying to get to his feet, he was again given a nudge for good measure. hercules then played the ball out of defence to tote, who at speed was sent sprawling by a desperate ruben. it appeared that having realised what a blunder he had made at one end, ref torres evened it up by denying a spot kick at the other. shortly afterwards, de lucas let fly a scorcher from all of 25 yards, just easing over the hercules cross bar. But it was hercules who finished the half strongest. ruben needed to get his body behind a powerful drive by farinos, before Gomes saw his long range shot just miss the target.

reading the match programme at half time, i noticed that amongst the hercules substitutes was ex pompey favourite noe pamarot (although he didn’t get to come on). now for the if only moment. six mins into the 2nd half, an arcing cross by de lucas was firmly headed onto the crossbar by cartagena’s captain marvel, mariano, before being cleared upfield. Back came hercules with a vengeance - sub kiko having his goal bound shot deflected behind.

at the other end, Victor just failed to reach a free kick at the far post. cartagena manager jim decided to shake the side up a bit, bringing on pacey front men Quintero and Balboa. with 10 mins remaining, de lucas struck another good effort just over the bar, then in stoppage time, it was hercules turn for shooting practice, when danciulescu emulated the feat.

KATIE REILLY’S GOLF SOCIETYhaving delayed our monthly meeting for a week

or so to allow more guests to arrive from the old country, twenty hardy souls from Katie reillys golf society made the short trip to font del Llop just north of elche.

We had clear blue skies, warm sunshine and a light cooling breeze which blew in almost every direction, mostly straight in our face when we were about to drive.

the course is well worth a visit, so get up there and test your golfing skills against a course which has been designed to bring the best out of every golfer no matter what your ability or handicap.

and so it was back to the great Banqueting hall at Katie reillys for the meal - superbly supplied as always by carmel - and the prize giving.

three Krgs members had actually attained the same overall score of 32, so it was all down to countback over the back nine, where it turned out that resident pro ryan Boal had only carded 18, nigel hubert had just edged him out on 19, while

bar owner jim hough - cue cries of cheat - had somehow scored 20 points. after three recounts the scores were confirmed. Of the guests, Brian harrison came out on top with 30 points. only just beating Don Keating, whose 21 back nine points was the best of the day.

MAGGOTS ENDROds and Reelsthis is now a very busy time for the

anglers in the club as we currently have 3 competitions going on at the same time. this week started the knockout Championship, which is 4 rounds of 6 anglers per round. the best 3 of each round go through to the final at the end of the month. Also there is the Summer Champion ship, and the summer league.

Firstly, the knockout, this was held on the Rio Segura at the Eden canal stretch. the first set of qualifiers for the final are as follows

1st Rob ‘Lenny´s Mate’ harrop fishing the pole with 7.360 kilo´s.

2nd Malcolm ‘Scottie’ Scott same method with 5.400 kilo´s.

3rd Pete ‘i Don’t Swear’ kerr same method with 2.880 kilo´s.

the other match this week was the 2nd in the Summer League series and was held on the Rio segura at Murcia. We were a bit fortunate during the day as there was some cloud cover thus keeping the temperature down slightly. the fishing was good throughout, although the river is running slightly lower than normal. there is also the standard amount of debris still rising up of the bottom of the river. this did cause some problems later in the day, as the wind blew upstream keeping the debris in a lot of swims. top rods on the day

2nd ian ‘irish Wizard’ Dalzell fishing

the pole using bread and corn with 26.94 kilo´s.

3rd Paul ‘Poco Loco’ Baxter fishing the pole using corn with 25.880 kilo´s.

While fishing this match it has been noticed that a lot of the carp appear to be blind i.e. the eyes are covered like a cataract. We don´t know whether this is a disease or not. as a suggestion any nets used at the river should be dried thoroughly in the sun, so if it is a disease it will not be transferred to other venue´s.

For those of you that reside on urbanization with Mick hill, please note that Mick is alive and well, as he decided not to venture into the murky depths of the Rio Segura, to retrieve the top section of his pole.

Soprona ( Environmental police of the Guarda Civil ) for not only their licence’s, but also their insurance. they did not have the insurance and were given 7 days to acquire it, and show it to the police.

with firm friendships being formed since the group started 4 years ago. Many members fish together regularly and say they are happy to have taken up a sport to replace golf and the like which have become so expensive. We have the occasional organised outing but the main aim is to introduce members to find fishing

companions and to assist in finding the venues.

General: Fishing seems to have improved at all venues with some big catches on the River Segura, to name one. there is an outbreak of fish disease on the Murcia town stretch of the Segura and we would seriously recommend that all nets are disinfected or dried thoroughly in the sun for a couple of days to alleviate the spread of disease to other waters.

Medal, the weather and course were perfect for an excellent days golf, there were not too many hold-ups today, everyone obviously making a great effort to speed up play. Mentioning no names – one player came in with what he thought was a net 68…turned out to be 72, slight problem adding up the totals of the front and back nines. moral of the story CHECK YOUR SCORE CARDS AFTER YOU HAVE FINISHED YOUR GAME!! however, he wasn’t disqualified as his gross score was correct. Our Treasurer, George nearly had a funny turn when Terry Sharley missed a hole in one on the 11th by half an inch!!

Addiction to alcohol is very simply defined as needing to drink, rather than just wanting to drink. So the million dollar question is at what point do we move from social drinkers to dependent drinkers and why does this happen? well, the reasons are many and varied. There is some clear research to show a genetic predisposition to addictive disorders (Alcoholism, drug Addiction, Gambling etc) and there is also some evidence to show that addictions can be socially constructed.

For example, if your parents or other significant adults in your childhood displayed alcoholic behaviour, this can become normalised by the child. So, if you have a genetic predisposition to addiction and you’re brought up in an environment where addictive behaviours are witnessed, then the likelihood of you developing an alcohol dependency increases massively.

So it is both a psychological and physical illness and it can develop slowly or quickly over time, depending on the individual circumstances. It is as real an illness as cancer or diabetes and has diagnosable symptoms, just like any other illness. It is a baffling condition, one which no-one ever gives their permission to, and certainly no-one ever sets out to become addicted to anything (especially true where addictions are present in family members).

The progress of addiction follows very clear stages, but the important part to consider is the element of tolerance to the substance or activity. Put simply, when we start drinking or using, we need only a relatively small amount to feel the effects of the drug (and alcohol is a drug). Continued exposure to the substance creates a tolerance, meaning that in order to get the

same effects, more is needed. And here comes the kicker. There are always consequences following use. It takes time to get over a drink or a drugging session, however, in the brain of the addict, the consequences are accepted as part of the high gained from using the substance.

eventually, the side effects (hangovers, shakes etc) become more and more until the user ‘needs’ to use the drug in order to just feel ‘normal’. The pursuit of this elusive feeling is classic in the addictive personality, rationalising behaviours in order to gain access to the drug of choice and limiting decisions to focus on getting the drink or drug they crave to feel ‘normal’. For example, choosing to pick the kids up from school or taking a drink to feel oK again, the drink usually wins.

It is at this time that the isolation of addiction becomes apparent. The addict is choosing their drug of choice over their loved ones and their regular responsibilities, such as work, just to make themselves feel normal and to chase the ‘high’ they felt from the drug originally.

This is why addictions are sometimes referred to as a ‘family illness’, because the addict displays behaviours towards the family that effect the family immensely. As the addict becomes withdrawn into their addiction, so does the family. Because the behaviour of their addict is so unpredictable, the family stops inviting friends round, or stops going out to meet other people. As the alcohol has isolated the addict, it too is isolating the family. It is as frustrating and upsetting for the family and loved ones of the addict as it is for the alcoholic themselves.
