Sokol Detroit Unit Meeting Minutes

May 10, 2016

President, Sr. Renata Greene, called the meeting to order at 7:06PM. Fifteen members were present. The

Pledge of Allegiance was recited. There was a moment of silence for Br. Steve Chapo, Br. Stanley

Chrastek, and long-time friend of Sokol Detroit, Jerry Robotka.

Applications for Membership: Sr. Rose Wiggle reported on her interview with prospective members, Brian

and Diane Hanna, and recommended them for membership. Also recommended for reinstatement was

Troy Oscar, husband of Sr. Amanda Jandasek. Sr. Maryann Fiordelis made a motion to accept them for

membership, Br. William O’Reilly seconded, and the Hannas and Mr. Oscar will be initiated at the June

meeting.

Bills and Correspondence: Newsletters received from Sokol Greater Cleveland, Sokol St. Louis, Sokol Syd-

ney, Sokol USA Times and the Czech Catholic Union.

Executive Reports:

Treasurer: Sr. Ann Marie Hurych was excused, and Sr. Wiggle presented her report.

Financial Secretary: Sr. Kirsten Conely reported that non-voting membership has been discussed.

BOI: Sr. Sharon Stanek read Sr. Lynn Conrad’s report: Paperwork has been distributed for the Sokol USA

2016 Slet; there is a cardio drumming class at the Center on Monday evening; preparation for the May 21

Hartland, Michigan, competitions; and the June 12 Sokol Detroit Slet at Sokol Camp.

Auditing Committee: Br. O’Reilly will meet soon with Sr. Hurych, and Br. Scott Brandon has not yet met

with the BOI.

UPC: Br. Alex Novacek reported. There was no UPC meeting last month. The Camp is ready to open.

The weekly Saturday evening clubroom evenings will begin; Camp opening is this weekend, earlier this

year, so that workers do not have to work on the Memorial Day weekend. Br. Novacek will purchase the

new Camp picnic tables directly from the manufacturer.

Publicity: Br. Larry and Marsha Swinkey reported that plans are continuing well for the Center Ethnic Festi-

val, July 16-17, 2016. Comp tickets and flyers are now available.

Scholarship: Br. Bruce Singley reported that the geranium sale flower pickup is scheduled for Saturday,

May 14, 9:30AM, at his home.

Northeastern District: The next teleconference is scheduled in the Sokol Center clubroom for Wednes-

day, May 18, 7:30PM.

Cottage Owners: The next meeting is Sunday, May 29, 2016.

A trivia contest will be held at Sokol Camp on Saturday, June 25, hosted by Br. Brett Mlinek and Sr. Nancy

Wheeler.

Ethnic Festival: Sr. Fiordelis is concerned about the lack of volunteers at this time for making kolache and

dumplings. An email blast will be sent to Sokol Detroit membership requesting this need for volunteers.

Baking dates scheduled: Thursday, May 12, 19, and 26, beginning at 8:00AM.

Br. Novacek announced that the 2016 Sokol Camp Bottomroo concert will be held on Saturday, Septem-

ber 17, 2016.

The April 2016 Unit meeting minutes were approved as submitted.

Page 12

Unfinished Business: Br. O’Reilly reported on the final report of the Sokol Location Investigation Commit-

tee that was formed in September 2015 to evaluate the best location for Sokol Detroit’s main operations

going forward. The committee concluded that Sokol Detroit remain in its current Dearborn Heights loca-

tion for at least the next several years. This final report will be distributed to the Sokol Detroit membership.

Br. Novacek last month recommended that a long-term committee be formed, and Sr. Greene asked

that, if there is anyone who is interested in joining this committee, he or she contacts her. Br. O’Reilly

wanted to thank all of the members of the committee who worked on this project and appreciates very

much the time and effort involved.

New Business: Br. Carl and Sr. Fiordelis presented Sokol Detroit with a donation of a 150th Sokol USA Anni-

versary plaque.

Br. Novacek brought forth three motions for member approval: liquor licenses for three upcoming

events: #1 – Camp July 4 Picnic; #2 – Center Ethnic Festival, July 16-17; #3 – Camp Bottomroo concert,

September 17. Motions seconded by Br. Victor Hurych. No objections. Motions passed.

Br. Novacek asked what procedures are in place for determining whether new members have met their

probationary first-year requirements. Sr. Greene will send an email to those members who joined Sokol

Detroit during the preceding year reminding them of their responsibilities.

The next meeting will be held at Sokol Camp on Tuesday, June 7, 2016, at 7:00PM.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:43PM.

Respectfully submitted, Sr. Rose Wiggle, Co-Recording Secretary
