Through Baptism, You are a New Creation “The Lord was baptized, not to be cleansed himself, but to cleanse the waters, so that those waters, cleansed by the flesh of Christ which knew no sin, might have the power of Baptism.” -St. Ambrose of Milan “The reason our Lord was baptized was because it was part of the whole process of emptying, of humiliation, of the Incarnation. How could he be poor with us, if he did not in some way conform to our poverty? How could he come among sinful men to redeem them, if he did not also reveal the necessity of being purged from sin? He had no need personally of having sins remitted, but he assumed a nature that was related to sinful humanity. Though he was without sin, he appeared to all men as a sinner, as he did on the cross. That was why he walked into the Jordan with all the rest of the sinners to demand the baptism of penance ‘in remission of sins.’” -Venerable Fulton Sheen This weekend the Church celebrates the feast of the Baptism of the Lord and brings to a conclusion the season of Christmas. Jesus, who submitted himself to the baptism of John, later gave his disciples the great commission: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved.” (Mark 16:15-16) It is fitting on this occasion to recall the necessity and the meaning of our own baptism, by which we were cleansed of sin, adopted as sons and daughters of the Father, made co-heirs with Christ to the joys of the heavenly kingdom and fashioned as temples of the Holy Spirit. Truly, at our baptism, we were made a new creation. St. Paul used those exact words to the Church at Corinth: “…whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come.” (2 Cor 5:17) St. Paul spoke in a similar way to the Church in Rome: “Are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead, we too might live in newness of life.” (Rom 6:3-4) At the moment of our baptism, we were made new and incorporated into the Church, the Body of Christ. We were infused with sanctifying grace, enabling us to believe in God, to hope in him and to love him; we were given the power to live and act under the prompting of the Holy Spirit through the Spirit’s manifold gifts; we were made able to grow in goodness through the moral virtues. Baptism configures us to Christ, sealing our soul with an indelible character or mark of our belonging to Christ. No sin can erase this mark, even if sin prevents us from harvesting the fruits of salvation. Therefore, St. Paul tells the Romans that through baptism, “you too must think of yourselves as being dead to sin and living for God in Christ Jesus.” (Rom 6:11)

ABCD 2020 Archbishop’s Charities & Development Drive

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

Christ has no body now but yours, No hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes through which Christ looks with compassion into this world. Yours are the feet with which Christ walks to do good. Yours are the hands with which Christ blesses the world. Simply stated, St. Teresa of Avila reminds us that we are the eyes, hands and feet of Christ.

While some objects, such as statues, relics and crosses, are to be venerated as symbols of Christ, these objects cannot serve as the body of Christ in today’s world; but people can. St. Teresa of Avila’s quote is meant to show us that we are His eyes, hands and feet, and now we are to see, go and act on His behalf. It is a call to action to be instruments of Jesus and to make God present in our everyday life.

We witness the real hands and feet of Jesus in the work of the Archdiocese of Miami above and beyond the good work in our parishes. It is evident in our efforts to preserve the dignity of all human life, and in our commitment to the poor, homeless, needy, elderly and sick. It lives in the hearts and minds of the children in our schools and religious education programs, as well as those serving in our life-changing ministries and programs. And remarkably, it is witnessed in you when you support the Archbishop’s Charity and Development Drive (ABCD) by making it all possible.

As a Catholic community, we embrace the call to action to make God present in all our lives. For many of us, our commitment to the Archdiocese of Miami, through the ABCD, allows us to be part of that active witness of our faith. The ABCD serves our community by giving hope to the hopeless, strengthening the faith of the discouraged and providing charity to those most in need.

Today, I write to you to ask you to prayerfully consider how you can be the eyes, hands and feet of Jesus by acknowledging the vital role you play in our universal Church through the support of the ABCD. Your gift to the ABCD allows the Archdiocese of Miami to help those in need just as He calls us to. Please join me in mirroring the love of Christ by putting our faith into action and make a gift of hope today.

Let us be One in Faith, One in Hope and One in Charity. It is not enough to say we are Christians: we must live the faith, not only with our words, but with our actions. Thank you and God bless you!

With gratitude and hope,

Most Reverend Thomas G. Wenski Archbishop of Miami
