GreenhouseGas TradingThe Kyoto Protocol contains amarket-based approach tocombat climate change in theform of the flexible mecha-nism emissions trading andgeneration of tradable emis-sion reduction creditsthrough projects.While many developed countries in theKyoto Protocol accepted a cap of theirtotal greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions,developing countries negotiated thattheir emissions will still be allowed togrow, as more economic growth isneeded. In order to facilitate technol-ogy transfer to help developing coun-tries in their sustainable developmentand at the same time assist the invest-ing (developed) countries with a cap tofulfil their commitment projects result-ing in emission reductions might beundertaken in developing countries.Such emission reductions are verifiedby a third party and can be used in acountry with a cap on emissions tocomply with their emission target. Inorder to generate emission reductionsa project has to prove that its imple-mentation leads to emissions lowerthan what would have happened in theabsence of the project. Examples of such projects are catalyticN2O destruction in the tail gas of nitricacid or caprolactam production plantsor methane capture in landfills. The generation of those emission re-ductions is under very strict supervi-sion of the UN as every emissionreduction generated in a develop-ing country that qualifies under themarket approach can be used to offsetemissions in a developed country.Hence the use of emission reductionsgenerated in third countries by a coun-try with a cap increases the totalamount of emissions possible in thatcountry. As a consequence only proj-ects that have a sound environmentalbasis, generating clearly additionalemission reductions qualify for thismarket mechanism.
