QUICK FACTS LEADING OFF (WHAT TO KNOW THIS SEASON)

- The 49ers meet five squads for the first time in 2016, including both opponents this weekend in Kentucky and Lehigh. The 49ers battled No. 22 UCF for the first time last weekend, taking the game to the wire before drop-ping a 4-1 contest for their first loss of the season at the Citrus Classic in Orlando, Fla.

-Charlotte began its 2016 campaign reaching a historic milestone. The Niners second game of the season, a 9-1 victory over Toledo, marked the program’s 400th victory at home.

-The 49ers enter the weekend at 12-3, including an 11-game winning streak to start the season, the second best start in program history. The most was 12 in a row to start the 2007 campaign.

-The Niners were picked to finish seventh in the Preseason C-USA Poll, as voted by the league’s coaches. Charlotte was selected to finish ahead of 2015 regular season and tournament champs WKU. Charlotte is looking for its third consecutive trip to the tournament, which would mark the longest streak during both of its C-USA tenures.

-Charlotte is coming off a milestone season in 2015 as the squad broke the single-season record for homeruns, blasting 36. Its HR leader is gone, but sophomore Haley Pace returns after finishing second on the team with 7.

-Charlotte was one of five teams selected from C-USA to host a television broadcast this season. The 49ers Sunday matchup against UTSA, which is Charlotte’s first home conference series of the year, was picked up by Fox Sports Network and will air LIVE at noon (eastern) on March 20.

LEADING OFF, SOME MORE- Charlotte entered last weekend fourth in the nation with a .50 ERA, and have slid only slightly, currently fourteenth in the NCAA with an 1.73 ERA, thanks to the duo of Lexi Betancourt and sophomore Haley Wiseman.

-The Niners boast reigning C-USA Co-Player of the Week and in freshman Lizzy Birch. Birch pumped out eight hits and hit .571 across five games last weekend, including smacking her first collegiate homer off the 2015 NCAA leader in ERA.

BIRCH’S POTW RESUME-The quick-gloved infielder picked all up all five of her season’s five RBI this past weekend, where she ripped two doubles, a triple, and a homer and scored three runs in Charlotte’s five games of the Citrus Classic at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports at Walt Disney World. Birch certainly ate her Wheaties during the tournament, helping the 49ers to three shutout victories to give them five on the year (the most for the program since 14 games since 1989) as she hit .571.

Birch collected two hits against No. 22 UCF’s ace Shelby Turnier, singling for the first hit of the pitching-dominated game for either team and then smacking her dead-center home run for two of the 49ers three hits in the contest.

Birch has totaled five multi-hit games in just 13 contests this season, and is the only member of the Niners to reach base in every game she has played this season.

Birch is currently third in the league in batting average (.467), on-base percentage (.614), and walks (11), and sixth in slug-ging percentage (.700). She’s a perfect 4-for-4 in stolen bases and has been an essential part of Charlotte’s impressive 12-2 start.

The Mint HIll, N.C., native has provided critical defense to a squad that has allowed the second fewest number of runs in C-USA behind (RV) Florida Atlantic, and has posted the third most assists on the team.

THE SCOUTING REPORTNO. 16/17 KENTUCKY WILDCATS SEVEN NCAA APPEARANCES, ONE COLLEGE WORLD SERIES The Wildcats will face Charlotte as the conclusion to their four-week road trip. The squad is off to its best start through 16 games in school history, where they have scored the most runs for this early into the season since 2007. Kentucky is also bolstered by a strong pitching staff where all four members registered career-highs in strikeouts last weekend at the Chattanooga Frost Classic in Tennessee. Sophomore hurler Erin Rethlake is coming off a no-hitter in her first start of the season during the Classic. UK could pit Rethlake or any of their other three pitchers on staff against the Niners, as all have thrown at least one complete game this season. Offensively, the Cats are led by fresh-man Katie Reed, who carries a program-best 16 game hitting streak with team-highs at a .520 batting average, .860 slugging percentage, and .564 on-base percentage. Kentucky returns 10 starters from their Super Regional squad a year ago, including ace Kelsey Nunley, who boasts a 6-1 record with a team-best 46 Ks.

LEHIGH MOUNTAIN HAWKS THIRTEEN PATRIOT LEAGUE TITLES, NINE NCAA APPEARANCES Just five games into their season, the Mountain Hawks have lost just once, falling 8-0 to UNC Greensboro last weekend. The squad returns seven starters from its 2015 NCAA Regional team, with four All-Patriot League preseason selections, including Preseason Pitcher of the Year in Christine Campbell. Campbell currently leads the Lehigh staff with a 3-0 record and 2.06 ERA. Senior outfielder Mackenzie Velasquez tops the squad offensively, posting a .583 clip with a team-best seven hits. Senior Morgan Decker, another Preseason all-league selection, holds a team-high nine RBI and .786 slugging percentage.
