MEET THE DESIGNERS

Curtis Lee has always loved all things design. He made a career out of

that passion six years ago when he joined Design Within Reach (DWR), which makes modern design accessible by offering furniture pieces that have been in production since the mid-20th century, as well as items being designed today.

“There’s nowhere else you can go to see all of these iconic collections under one roof,” said Lee.

Originally a studio proprietor

for DWR in Honolulu, Lee is now the area manager for DWR in both Orange County and Ha-waii. He relishes the opportunity to spend every day surrounded by pieces from past and present-day designers.

“Many of our items are part of permanent exhibitions at MOMA (the Museum of Modern Art),” he said.

He and others at DWR work to alleviate the overwhelming feeling their clients often experi-ence when trying to achieve a style or signature look on their

own. Lee recommends focusing on re-imagining a single room at a time. He also suggests design enthusiasts take advantage of DWR’s complimentary 3D space planning service to help visualize their space.

“A great room or a great design instantly improves your mood,” he said.

Lee also understands the inno-vative and signature brand DWR is and appreciates the company’s ability to make authentic modern design accessible. He is proud that there are no copies or knock-

offs at DWR.He also understands the en-

during attributes of quality style. He recommends that designs and style choices should be relevant and look great in your home or office in five, 10 or 20 years.

“At Design Within Reach, we look for and carry designs that will endure the test of time,” said Lee.

Design Within Reach is located in SOCO at 3343 Hyland Ave., Suite C1, Costa Mesa. For more information, visit dwr.com or call 714.427.0628.

Most of us never think of our closet doors as a decorating tool,

but The Sliding Door Company can help to change the way you think.

At The Sliding Door Company in SOCO, showroom manager Kym George relishes the opportunity to show clients how to make a room more styl-ish with sliding doors.

And there are many lovely ones to choose from. Doors at The Sliding Door Company come in a variety of frames and sizes, and a variety of glass types, including clear, frosted

and black.George thrives on helping

people see the many options they have to change a room from drab to fab with doors.

“It’s fun solving our clients’

interior door challenges and being inspired by the beautiful SOCO surroundings,” she said.

Part of her job is showing clients what’s trendy and fash-ionable.

She said one of the biggest trends in doors is “making spaces flexible with use of our room dividers and then adding that ‘wow factor’ with our frameless glass barn doors.”

To achieve that “wow factor,” George advises clients to “invest in high quality and functional products that will add beauty to your spaces and make your life easier.”

George gets a tremendous amount of pleasure helping her clients see the wonders that slid-ing doors can do for a room.

“It’s very rewarding to be able to offer multi-functional, high-quality, great-valued product that our clients love!” she said. “We are an innovative company that is always pushing the envelope with our solutions.”

The Sliding Door Company is located at SOCO at 3323 Hyland Ave., Suite G2, in Costa Mesa.

Deborah Waltz is a true Renaissance woman. Over the past two

years, she’s reinvented herself while also changing the way people in Orange County view their old furniture – from an-tiques to flea market finds.

This former interior designer has expanded her artistic influ-ence, working with hundreds of clients in her workshop and showroom, Peinture Studios at SOCO in Costa Mesa, helping them not only refinish, but actu-ally reinvent their furnishings.

Often using just a brush and a can of Chalk Paint® deco-rative paint by Annie Sloan, Waltz helps transform tables, chairs, doors, floors and more.

She has become the region’s go-to expert for furniture trans-formation, painting techniques and turning old relics into

jaw-dropping pieces. Her love for Chalk Paint – a one-step, no-prep painting process from the UK that she discovered on-line – and passion for sharing it with others inspired her to open her bright, airy and colorful showroom and studio in SOCO last year.

Waltz is constantly on the hunt for pieces to completely transform with paint. Her favorite flea market is the Long

Beach Flea Market, but she’s also found some of her favorite pieces at the Salvation Army, estate sales, craigslist.com and garage sales.

She also loves to haunt small vintage shops in Los Angeles and salvage stores in San Diego. She always has her eye on old buffets, armoires and pieces with casters – because of their charm and ornate details – which look incredible with the application of the Chalk Paint.

In an area known for being on-trend, Waltz is seeing trends in the paint department: a ton of graphite, which is a soft black color; old white, which is a creamy white; and duck egg blue, soft blue with green undertones, all being purchased consistently at Peinture Studios.

Waltz agrees with interior designer Jan Showers’ opinion

that “every room needs a touch of black – just as it needs at least one antique piece.”

Waltz is forecasting that saturated and subdued earth tones – rusty reds, golds and warm grays – are coming next season. She also notes that the mid-century modern look is coming back in style, bringing with it brass and gold finishes, along with bamboos and rattans for texture.

Fans of Peinture will be happy to know that Waltz is introducing a contemporary stencil line that can make walls and floors look like high-end wallpaper.

Peinture is located in SOCO at 3323 Hyland Ave., Suite E2, in Costa Mesa.

For more information on Peinture, visit peinturestudios.com or call 714.427.0668.
