Sociology AS and A Level Examination board: AQA The fascination with Sociology lies in the fact that its perspective makes us see in a new light, the very world in which we have lived our whole lives.(Peter Berger) Sociology considers the development, structure and functioning of society. Its subject matter is diverse, ranging from crime to religion; from the family to the state; from the divisions of race and class to the shared beliefs of a common culture. Students who take Sociology at AS/A Level have an interest in society and culture as a whole - locally, nationally and globally. They are inquisitive and question why things happen. They have an open mind and the ability to debate, criticise and share their point of view and opinions. Studying Sociology helps students develop critical analysis and evaluation skills, increase their confidence in discussions and debates, develop writing and literacy skills, and finally realise that things are not always as they seem’! Assessment: Year 1 examinations (taken in the summer of Year 12) Year 2 examinations (taken in the summer of Y13) Careers and Study Progression: University courses in: Sociology, Criminology, Social Policy, Gender Studies, Social Anthropology or any social work field. It can lead to a wide range of jobs in the police force, nursing, teaching, counselling, social work, civil service, lecturer, researcher, midwife, youth or community worker. The chief concern of sociology students is people and, therefore, jobs in the police force, market research, retail management, disability advising and the civil service are all areas into which sociology students may choose to go. Other subjects Sociology works well with include Psychology, Law, Health and Social Care, Philosophy and Ethics, English, History, Geography.
