Society of Antiquaries of Scotland Internal Manuscripts These comprise letters and other documents principally concerned with the administration of the Society and its Museum and Library, and they were not included in the main catalogued collection.     2/1 Brown envelope in poor condition, labeled ‘Committee Roman Excavations, Mr Cunningham’s papers’.

    2/2 Handwritten letter from John Abercromby at 62 Palmerston Place, Edinburgh, to Mr Cunningham at the Society, dated 14 July [1902]. Covering letter for comments from committee members on David Christison’s report on Roman studies in Scotland. Recommends that excavations should be carried out in tandem with those on stone circles in Aberdeenshire & Mearns and that the committee members should supervise on a rota basis. Suggests that John Findlay should be invited to join the committee.

    2/3 Handwritten comments on Christison’s report, signed J H Cunningham and dated 31 May 1902. Recommends that Christison’s valuable list of Roman sites should be printed in the Proceedings, that the acreage of each fort be provided, and that sites should be chosen for excavation south of the Tay and in NE Scotland.

    2/4 Handwritten comments on Christison’s report, signed Thomas Ross and dated 2 June 1902, at 65 Frederick Street, Edinburgh. Suggests adding more references to past work. Early indications of location of fort at Cramond. Recommends excavation at Rough Castle.

    2/5 Handwritten ‘Memorandum’ dated 21 June 1902 and signed Arthur Mitchell, with comments on Christison’s report. Recommens excavation at Rough Castle. Mentions John Abercromby’s offer of financial support for prehistoric excavations and suggests that a committee should be set up with Abercromby as convener.

    2/6 Handwritten comments on Christison’s report by George MacDonald. Agrees that list of sites should be published. ‘In Scotland generally, interest in things Roman is much more general than interest in things prehistoric.’ Sought Haverfield’s opinion and encloses his comments.

    2/7 Typewritten comments from Frances Haverfield, apparently edited in red ink by MacDonald. Importance of the Antonine Wall and work at Rough Castle. North of the Wall the extent of the Roman advance needs to be ascertained. Recommends test excavations on sites. Two sheets held together by textile tape.

  • 2/8 Handwritten comments on Christison’s report by Robert Munro, dated 23 May 1902. Doubts financial viability of excavations. Support’s Abercromby’s proposal for work on prehistoric sites.

    2/9 Handwritten comments on Christison’s report by John Abercromby and edited in red ink. Recommends publication of Christison’s report, and emphasizes need to remember needs of prehistoric archaeology. Includes suggestion that some prehistoric forts may be earlier than the Iron Age. Proposes two Exploration Funds: ‘one devoted to the elucidation of our native prehistoric antiquities; the other to the exploration of Roman stations and camps. To the first I am ready to contribute from £150 to £200 a year for the rest of my life or as long as I have the necessary funds at my disposal.’

    2/10 White envelope in which Christison’s report was distributed to members of the Excavations Committee, with note initialed by Cunningham, ‘Please forward, with your comments, to the Member whose name follows yours on the list’.

    2/11 Handwritten report by David Christison on the state of Roman sites in Scotland. List divided into sites south and north of Antonine Wall. Recommends excavation of Rough Castle once Castlecary is finished. Pencil comments in margin probably by Thomas Ross.

    2/12 Typewritten copy of report of Excavations Committee to Council, with handwritten corrections and insertions.

First concerns a bronze shield found in bog at Yetholm a few days previously, and a cup-and-ring marked stone found in garden in Jedburgh. Second concerns same carved stone and how the owner might be persuaded to part with it. See PSAS 8, 393.

    17/21 Letter from Capt F W L Thomas of Rosepark, Trinity, dated 17 March 1870, addressed to Joseph Anderson. Regrets ill heath has prevented him from meeting Anderson. His friend Carmichael of Loch Maddy is anxious to know how his communication to the Society was received and asks whether the Society would like to have some stone mortars from Barra. ‘I have a number of drawings which I shall be glad to show and discuss with you – a dun of an entirely new type – and another in which lime mortar has been used in its construction. I see Sir H. Dryden has deposited his drawings with the Society – could I have the loan of that volume that contains the Shetland Broughs?’

    17/32 Letter from A Henry Rhind from 40 York Crescent, Clifton, Bristol, 23 September 1862. He has corrected the proof of the Handbook of Egyptian Antiquities. He has just moved from Down House, and will sail from Southampton to Egypt on 2 Oct for a month.

    17/33 Letter from James Hutchison of The Scotch Warehouse, Oxford Street, London, dated 25 April 1866, and addressed to ‘The Secretary Scotch Antiquarian Society’. He has the drinking cup and sea chest belonging to Alexander Selkirk, Defoe’s ‘Robinson Crusoe’, and offers them for sale to the Museum. (They were purchased eventually by Sir David Baxter who presented them to the Museum in January 1870, PSAS 8, 256-62.)

  • 17/34 Letter from Richard A Powell, Commodore of HMS ‘Topaze’, written from Port Mont, Chile, on 27 January 1869, and addressed to Thomas Selcraig at Edinburgh. Describes location of tablet to Alexander Selkirk in the island of Juan Fernandez and accompanies photograph of tablet. With the letter is a newspaper cutting dated 18 July 1872 about the tablet and its location.

    17/35 Letter from David Milne Home of Paxton House, Berwick on Tweed, dated 7 January 1869 and addressed to John Stuart. Refers to Stuart’s forthcoming paper on Edin’s Hall. He is anxious that the site should be ‘protected from further dilapidation’, for he knows that stones are constantly robbed from the walls and cattle trample on the remains. He proposes that a stone wall should be built around the site, paid for by subscription and directed by a committee. Wishes Stuart to read out his letter to the meeting. (See PSAS 8, 41-6.)

    17/36 Letter from J I F Thallon of the North British Railway Company dated 6 April 1869, addressed to the Curator of the Museum. Thomas Dick, the station master at Kinghorn, Fife, wishes to present to Society an urn which was found on 13 February in ‘a grave in a field west from Grangehill Farm in the Parish of Kinghorn’. (See PSAS 8, 143.)

    17/37 Letter from R J Mapleton of Dunhoon Castle, Lochgilphead, dated 2 April 1870. He will send a cast of an ‘ogham’ stone and a cast of a stone with axe carvings from a cist, donated by Alexander Fraser, Malcolm of Poltalloch’s architect and Clerk of Works at Kilmartin. (See PSAS 8, 378-81.)

    17/38 Letter from George Petrie at Kirkwall, 6 January 1871, addressed to Joseph Anderson. Excavations at broch of Lingrow have resumed but weather inclement. Young lady visitor discovered Roman silver coin on spoil heap. Encloses sketches of two bone combs found at Lingrow.

    17/39 Letter from George Petrie at Kirkwall, 4 July 1871, addressed to Joseph Anderson. Petrie has two stone urns of similar shape from parish of Stenness and will send one to Anderson. Has been excavating at the Howe of Hoxa. Reproachful that Society has not published his paper on brochs. Visited ‘Cubbie Row’ with Sir Henry Dryden and found that farmer had been quarrying stones from one corner. Sculptured stone has been found with Maltese cross [Flotta].

    17/40 Letter from James Thomas Irvine of Coombe Down, Bath, dated 28 March 1870 and addressed to John Stuart. He owns the pair of bronze spoons found at Weston near Bath and wishes to loan them to the Museum. They have been ‘engraved’ by A Way for a paper and he is willing that the blocks can be used by the Society if desired. (See PSAS 8, 360-4.) (see 17/247 for donation of spoons.)

  • 17/41 Seven letters from Thomas Edmonston of Buness, Unst, Shetland Isles to Joseph Anderson, dated 25 June to 14 November 1870, and one related letter from Mrs Budge of Seafield Cottage, Mid Yell, to Edmonston 7 July 1870. 25 June In reply to Anderson’s letter of17 June. Mentions chair and Mrs Budge’s testimony as to its authenticity. 27 June Has sent the Spanish Admiral’s chair by steamer to Edinburgh. 14 July Encloses Mrs Budge’s letter of 7 July about the history of the chair. (See PSAS 8, 470-2.) Also has some stone implements and weapons from northern Unst that the Society may have, but mentions a ‘rebuff I have lately received from your Society’. 3 August In reply to Anderson’s ‘kind note’ of 27 July. Edmonston is unable physically to supervise the excavations himself but has an ‘intelligent substitute’, and he will ensure that ‘the money is spent solely for the purpose for which it is given’. (See PSAS 9, 283, 355). 31 August James Hay is supervising the excavations which have been successful in obtaining artefacts. 8 October Accompanying a sketch of ‘one side of the stone showing the characters’, also refers to steatite ‘ladle’. 14 November ‘By the same steamer that carries this you will receive two boxes containing the results of our labours in Unst’. Edmonston has prepared a paper for the Society (PSAS 9, 283-7).

    17/42 Two letters from Alexander Laing of Newburgh. 5 April 1871, to J Stuart, concerning find of flint ‘spear head’ from Gattaway in Perthshire by fisherman David Bennet, who has ‘a thorough scent for antiquities’. Concerning a stone from Borness, Kirkcudbrightshire, and a silver coin from Kirkcudbright, sent to him by James Man, fisherman.
