WELCOME Dear Colleagues, Welcome to the Tenth Annual Meeting of the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior being held at the University of California at Santa Cruz among the redwoods overlooking Monterey Bay from August 7 – 11, 2002. We not only have this stunningly beautiful campus for our annual conclave, but also the extra assurance that two of our members, M. R. C. Greenwood and John Simpson, who are respectively, Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor of UCSC, will be our hosts. This wonderful setting will be awash in first class scientific presentations highlighted by six invited symposia, five invited lectures, and our centerpiece New Investigator Presidential Symposium. A new feature this year is that two of the invited lectures cover topics of broad interest, but beyond the usual purview of SSIB. The Women's Forum is sponsoring Dr. Nancy Hopkins of MIT who will speak on “A Report on the Status of Women Faculty in Science -How MIT Responded.” And our Keynote Speaker, M.R.C. Greenwood will give her perspective on “Research in the Post 9-11 Era: Challenges and Opportunities.” We welcome your participation. Enjoy!

ABSTRACTS Abstracts for the 10th SSIB meeting have been published in Appetite Vol. 39, Issue 1, pp. 61-109, 2002. Abstracts not published in Appetite per the authors’ request are printed below in alphabetical order. Linkage Analysis for Anorexia Nervosa. K.A. HALMI, D.E. GRICE, W.H. BERRETTINI, W.H. KAYE, THE PRICE CONSORTIUM. Weill Cornell Medical College, 21 Bloomingdale Rd., White Plains, New York, 10605, USA. A genomewide linkage analysis of 192 families with one anorexia nervosa proband and one affected eating disorder relative produced a nonparametric linkage (NPL) score, 1.80 at marker D452367 on chromosome 4. A linkage analysis in a subset of families, 37 with reduced heterogeneity (two affected relatives with restricting anorexia nervosa) produced the highest multipoint NPL score of 3.03 at marker D153721 on chromosome 1p. Genotyping of additional markers in this region gave a peak multipoint NPL score of 3.45. This finding is suggestive evidence for the presence of an anorexia nervosa susceptibilitiy locus on chromosome 1p. Meal patterning of high fat and high carbohydrate diet consumption in rats: Relevance to single meal studies. S.J. SYNOWSKI, Z.S. WARWICK, University of Maryland Baltimore County, Baltimore MD 21250. In rats, consumption of diets high in fat typically elicits greater intake and weight gain than consumption of diets high in carbohydrate. Isocaloric (2.3 kcal/ml) high-fat (HF) and high-carbohydrate (HC) liquid diets have been utilized to investigate macronutrient effects on meal size (kcals) and satiety (Am. J. Phys. 269, R30-7, 1995). In single laboratory meals (typically elicited by a conditioned stimulus), meal size of HF was approximately 34% greater than HC. In preload-testmeal paradigms, HF produced approximately 27% less postprandial satiety than HC. However, the relationship of these findings to spontaneous feeding is not known. The present study evaluates the ecological validity of findings from single laboratory meals by recording ad libitum feeding of HF and HC across eight days in a between-subjects design. Computerized records of lick activity are being analyzed to identify discrete meals according to established criteria (Am. J Phys. 275, R1511-22, 1998). From these data, measures of meal size, meal frequency and postprandial satiety will be derived. If the relative intake of HF and HC in spontaneous meals is consistent with that observed in a single laboratory meal, this will support the use of single meal strategies to understand macronutrient effects on feeding over longer periods of time. Supported by NIH DK55367. Mouse strain survey of voluntary mineral consumption. M.G. TORDOFF, A.A. BACHMANOV. Monell Chemical Senses Center, 3500 Market St., Philadelphia, PA 19104, USA. We conducted two surveys of the preference for calcium, sodium, and other minerals by mice. In one, 10-12 male mice from 28 strains received two-bottle tests with a choice between water and 4 or 5 concentrations of NaCl, KCl, CaCl2, and NH4Cl. In the other, 10 male and 10 female mice from 40 strains received two-bottle tests with three concentrations of CaCl2, Ca.lactate, NaCl, and Na.lactate. At the end of behavioral testing, blood was collected to analyze calcium and hormones related to mineral appetite. The results show the rich diversity of responses displayed by mice. Modest, although significant, correlations were present between strain mean CaCl2 and NH4Cl preferences, which suggests the possible involvement of a common physiological substrate. Other correlations were nonsignificant, including those between calcium and sodium preferences. This demonstrates that the intake of different minerals involves independent control mechanisms. We were surprised to find that few (if any) mouse strains showed sex differences in preferences for either sodium or calcium. This contrasts with work using other species and raises questions about the importance of reproductive steroids in determining mineral intake. The results form part of the Mouse Phenome Project, so they can easily be compared with many other behaviors and physiological measures, and thus create novel hypotheses about the controls of calcium and sodium preference. They also provide reference data for recognizing mutants and other mice with aberrant phenotypes. Finally, they provide a solid foundation for the dissection of the genetic basis of calcium and sodium intake. Investigation of the molecular mechanisms of angiotensin II type 1 receptor mediated mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) activation. D.K. YEE, J. HINES, S.J. .FLUHARTY. Department of Animal Biology and Institute of Neurological Sciences, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA. 19104. Increased thirst and salt appetite, which are classically associated with the neuropeptide angiotensin II (AngII), are mediated by centrally-located AngII type 1 receptors (AT1-Rs). This subtype is known to signal through (i) inositol trisphosphate (IP3) turnover, which controls cellular calcium mobilization, and (ii) activation of the p42 and p44 MAPKs, which control gene expression and cell proliferation. Using AT1-R mutants, we investigated the molecular determinants of AngII-induced receptor activation using both signaling pathways as functional indices. Surprisingly, receptor mutants that demonstrated drastically impaired AngII-induced IP3 responses still showed full ability to activate MAPK, thereby indicating that activation of these two signaling pathways involve different structural determinants within the receptor protein and that receptor activation may involve multiple activation states. In other G-protein coupled receptors, activation of MAPKs has been reported to be mediated by both Gq. and Gi. While the AT1-R is capable of coupling to these two G-proteins, the signaling pathway(s) utilized to activate MAPKs has not been completely determined for this receptor. Accordingly, we made use of specific inhibitors to protein kinase C (blocking the Gq pathway) and to Gi in further functional characterizations of wild type and mutant receptors. Preliminary data from these experiments do not support a role for either Gq or Gi in AT1-R mediated activation of MAPKs and suggest that an alternate signaling pathway(s) may connect this receptor to MAPK activation. Supported by NIH grants HL58792 and MH43787.
