Editor’s NotEThe 149th annual general meeting on 1st april 2013 sawtheelectionofthewholecommitteetooffice.Thepresidentthankedthemembersfortheircontinuedsupportandtrustinthecommitteecomingatatimewhentheracingindustryis facing challenging timeswith persistent falling turnoverandattendanceattheraces.

TheTotalisatoroperationsweregivena reprievewhentheturfclubstookoverthebettingoperationstokeephorseracing going as an interim measure following the abruptterminationoftotalisatoroperationsbytheauthorisedagent,panmalaysianpoolsSdnbhd.Theshowmustgoonandaseveryoneknows,ifthereisnobetting,therewillbenoviableracingindustrytospeakof.Theturfclubsarenowworkingwith lembaga Totalisator malaysia and the ministry offinance to find avenues to keep racing afloat. The club iskeeping its options open and in the event the unthinkableshould happen it will have to seek legal redress againstthe authorised agent. when totalisator operations werefirst privatised to pan malaysian pools by the Totalisatorboard over twenty years ago, the turf clubswere strippedof their operations to the lucrativebig Sweep lotteries andnumbers forecast. ever since then, the racing industry hadbeensustainedbyalifelineintheformofsubsidiesfromtheauthorised agent. Thewithdrawal of our lifeline has come

at a very difficult time for the racing industry, hence, ourpredicamenttoday.

next year we will be entering another chapter of ourhistoryaswewillbecelebratingour(150th)sesquicentennialanniversary.whenthebritishfoundingfathersfoundedtheclubsevenscoresandnineyearsago,ourclubsubscribedtothetraditionsoftimehonouredvaluesofintegrity,honesty,sportsmanship andhonour amonggentlemen.we are gladwecontinuetoadheretothesevaluesasourunwrittencode.Turf clubs theworldoverareguidedby thesebasicvaluesandanytransgression,drasticmeasuresaretakentopreservetheintegrityoftheclub.Theissueofintegrityisintegraltothesportofkingsandcannotbecompromised.

eventhoughwearegoingthroughtumultuousandtougheconomictimes,theclub,anon-profitmakingorganisationcontinues to make numerous charitable donations tocharitable organisations and other social causes. with thesesquicentennial anniversary round the corner, the clubwill certainly celebrate the occasion in a suitable mannerbefitting theanniversary.150years isavery long timeandweshouldlookatourheritagewithprideconsideringmanyorganisationsandevennationshavecomeandgonewithinthattime!

Aswithpreviousyears,thepenangTurfclub once again kicked off the yearwith its annual ordinary members’Trip to Thailand to witness thereciprocalcupraceatRoyalTurfclub

ofThailand.Theclubhadearlierreceivedanoverwhelmingresponseandseverallate-comershadbeenturneddown.

The penang international airport was all abuzz in theearly hours of the morning on 10 january 2013 when the92-memberdelegationledbycommitteemembers;datoSeriTehchoonbeng,datoRobertchanwootkhoonanddatodrhenryooikweelim,gatheredtocheck-infortheirflightonThaiairwaystoSuvarnabhumiinternationalairport.

onarrivalatSuvarnabhumiairport,thegroupboardedthreedouble-deckercoachestokhaoyai,ajourneythattook2½hours.

khaoyaiismadeupoffourprovinces,namelySaraburi(west), nakhon nayok (east), nakhon Ratchasima (north)and prachinburi (east). blessed with an alpine climate, alush, mountainous landscape, coupled with fertile valleys,poundingwaterfallsandrichbiodiversity,khaoyaiisayear-round getaway destination as it has a cooler climate thanbangkokcity.

when the delegationarrived in khao yai,they were led off to asumptuous Thai buffetlunch at ThegreeneryResort.afterlunch,thegroupwastransferredto kirimaya golfResort&Spalocatedalong the moo-Si –pakchongroute.

kirimayadefinedasillusionofmountainoffersguestsatranquilenvironmentnestlesinlushsurroundingscompletewithnaturetrailsandajackniklaus-designedgolfcourse.

pak chong is the westernmost district of nakhonRatchasima province. pak chong, meaning mouth of thechannel,isthebiggestdistrictofnakhonRatchasimabyarea.

afterchecking-inattheresort,memberswhooptedtogoshopping,quicklyassembledandboardedthebustopiazzapalio.piazzapalioisashoppingcentrethatstartedoperationsin2010andislocatednearthenorthentranceofthekhaoyainationalpark.piazzapaliomirrorsasmallitalianvillageinTuscanyasitisbuiltonasmallsquarewithafountaininthecentre, surrounded by lots of small shops, restaurants andcafesbuiltalongitsnarrowstreets.

in the evening, themembers were takentobanmaichaynamResortandRestaurant,located 45 minutesaway from the resort.astheentranceleadingto the restaurantwas too narrow forthe three coaches,members were ferriedin groups by tram tothe restaurant whichprovedquiteanoveltyfor visitors to therestaurant.

The interior ofban mai chay namis decorated likea museum, with awonderful collectionof old memorabiliaand antiquescomprising not onlyof Thai artefacts butchinese, nyonyawares and englishporcelain showcased in everyavailablenookand corneroftherestaurant.itwasnotjustthefoodthatwasafeasttothe

palate but the collection of old memorabilia andantiqueswasalsoa tripdownmemory laneandasighttocherish.

on the followingmorning, thegolfingmembersledbycommitteemember,datoRobertchanwootkhoon teed off at kirimaya golf course, a pristineand challenging course where a stray shot may costalostball.Thememberswhooptedtogosight-seeingdeparted the hotel at 9:30am for a tour of chockchaifarm.

chockchai farm is the brainchild of mr. chokchai bulakul.establishedin 1957 on 100 acres of land, the farm’s sole business operation then, wasbeef cattle ranching. Today, the farm has diversified into animal feedmill,restaurant, ice-creamanddairyplantaswellasrealestate,withmostof thebusinessactivitiesconcentratedinfarmchokchaiinpakchongdistrict,nakornRatchasimaarea.

during theguided tourof thefarm, themembersweretakentothemilkingparlourtoseethemilkingoftheholstein-friesian breed of cows imported from holland. Somememberseventriedtheirhandatmilkingthecowsunderthesupervisionofthestaff.fromthemilkingparlour,thegrouptoured the dairy plant to learn about the pasteurisation ofmilkandice-creamproductionwhichissoldinallchokchaioutlets.Thegroupalsotouredthecattlefeedlotareatoseetheherdof5,000holstein-friesian,Sahiwal-friesian,guernsey,brownSwissandayrtshirebreedofdairyandbeefcattle,aswellasthebreedingarea.Thefarmisself-sustainingaseventhemanurefromthecattleisusedasfertilizerforthepastureandcornfarm.Therewerealsosunflowerfieldsspanning18

afteratourofthewinery,thegroupwastakenthrough the process of wine-making and hadthe opportunity of trying the local chenin blanc,Temperrillo and Shiraz wine produced by thewinery.

after the tour, the group returned to bangkok.aftera3-hourbusride,thememberswerefamishedandlookingforwardtolunchatdaiichi,ajapaneserestaurantatemeraldhotel.

following lunch, the group then checked intocentaragrandhotel for a rest beforemeeting thedelegates from theRoyal Turfclub of Thailand intheevening.

afterhavingtheirlunchatkirimaya,thegolfersheaded forcentaragrandhotel to join the rest ofthegroup.

The evening dinnerwas hosted by general andmrs. boonlert kaewprasit andthe committee members ofRoyalTurfclubofThailandatSomboonSeafoodRestaurant.The entertainment for theevening was a talented3-piecebandfromtheRoyalThaiarmy.

acresonthefarm.inturn,seedsfromthesunflowerareusedasfoodfortheaviary.

Thefarmalsogrowsitsowngrasssuchasruzigrassandlegumeplants forhay, tobeusedas feedfor thecattleandhorses.whenroughageisinsufficientduringthedryseason,thefarmprocessesitsownsilageforthecattleandhorses.

Thereisalsoacaninedivisiononthefarmwheredifferentbreedsofdogs,suchasgoldenRetriever,americancockerSpaniel, Toy poodle, Schnauzer, are raised for sale aswellas for show and training; a petting zoo with deers andrabbits, which can be fed by the visitors aswell as sheep,koifishes,storks,camels,ostriches,emu,greenwingmacawandcockatoos.Thefarmalsoputsonanentertainingshowshowcasing the antics of a chimpanzee and orangutan todelightthecrowd.

ahorse training facility is also foundon the farm andapart from raising thoroughbred horses for sale, otherhorsessuchasthequarterhorsebreedareraisedforridingpurposes.foranominalfee,thepublichastheopportunitytohavetheirphotographstakenonhorsebackagainstacowboymoviesettingorcanopttogoridingonthehorse.

afterthetour,themembershadlunchatthefarm.in the afternoon, somemembers went shopping at the

outletmallVillagewhileagroupof30membersvisitedTheStud–afarmprivatelyownedbydatoSatishSehgal.datoSatish Sehgal is a personal friend of committee member,datoSeriTehchoonbeng.datoSatishSehgalwasagracioushostashenotonlytookthegroupforatourofhisfarm,butalso laid out a delicious tea for themembers.at the farm,therewerebroodmaresinfoal,yearlings,weanlingsaswellasastallion(MendelssohnbyDanzigoutofQueena).

onthefollowingmorning,thegolfershadanotherroundofgolfatkirimayagolfwhiletheothersweretakenforatourofpbValleywinery.

Themembers had an enjoyable evening with the goodfoodandgoodmusic.

ThepenangTurfclubTrophywaswonbyDuang Popruk,ridden by jockey kosin in a time of 1:11:54. The winningconnections as well as the breeder of Duang Popruk alsoreceived 188,000baht sponsored by penang Turf club.committeemembersdatoSeriTehchoonbeng,datoRobertchanwootkhoonanddatodrhenryooikweelimwereonhandtopresentthetrophiestothewinningconnections.

later,itwasatimeofmerrimentwhenthememberswerehostedtoanauthenticThaifoodbuffetdinneraccompaniedbyafour-piecebandattheRoyalTurfclubofThailand.

allthemembershappilyagreedthatithadbeenatrulymemorable tripwith thehospitalityandwarmthshownbyourThaifriends.

Mr Raffles conquers Penang

First Singapore trained galloper to win Sprint Trophy in cross-border

racing

S ince theresumption of cross-border racing in 2005,Singapore trainedhorseshave failed to win the

Sprint Trophy — until last yearwhen Mr Raffles (brown newZealand gelding by Storm Creek - Force Fillee by Foxbay) scoreda runaway win in the 1,400mpremiersprint.

RiddenbySouthafricanjockeygreg cheyne who was riding inmalaysia for the first time, themichael freedman-trained newZealand gelding trashed hismalaysian rivals by five and aquarterlengths.

The victory followed a coupleof near-misses by Singaporegallopersinthepast.

in 1900, new and substantialstandswerebuilt.Theseweretoservethe club for nearly 40 years until theclub acquired its present 93-hectaresite for $250,000 at batu gantong in1935. atthethree-dayjanuarymeetingin 1907, the stakes totalled $26,000.Therewereentriesfromthefederatedmalay States, Singapore, burma,the netherlands indies and india.membershipwasthen500. localsbecameinvolvedinracingbytheturnofthecenturyandamongthe prominent penang owners were

drpVlocke,leeToonpoon,chungThye Siong and his brother chungThye pin, whose devilment won the

Singaporederby in 1905. chungThye pin donated a cast-ironwater fountain to the club in1904. This fountain is nowrelocated to the front of the

golfclubhouse. worldwariheldupthegrowthofracingthroughouttheregionandithadbarelyhadtimetogetgoingagainbefore it was badly affected by thedepressionoftheThirties. nevertheless,penangwentaheadwith the purchase and constructionof the new course and stands at batugantong in a splendid setting. workwascompletedatacostof$350,000andthecoursewasopenedonmay27,1939byjdkemp,whowaspresidentwhenworkbeganin1936. Thecourseisninefurlongsand94yards.Theclubalsohasagolfcoursewith seven holes in the centre of thecourseproperand11holesinadjoiningareas. The three-floor grandstand isof themostmoderndesign,givingallseatsa clearviewof racing.Thereareexcellenttotalisatorandotherfacilitiesandan infield indicatorboard.Racing

canalsobeviewed from teapavilionsformembersandordinarymembers. when world war ii broke outtherewereover100horses in trainingatpenang.largelyduetotheeffortsofonghucklim,aprominentchancerylawyerwho later becamepresident oftheclub, racingmanaged to carry onbetween1942and1945. with lieutenant coloneldrake-brockman, ong worked onrehabilitation after the war and theywere later joined by cddhogan, aformerpresident, inensuringareturntopre-war standards. leeToonpoon,formanyyearsaprominentsupporterof theclub, becamepresident and hewas succeeded by Tan Sri lee Tiangkenganddatuklimhuckaik. datuk lim was the longestservingpresident,fromnovember1958until his retirement in july 1982. hemust be remembered as the personwho is instrumental in turning thepenang Turf club from the verge ofbankruptcy (in those early days) towhatitistoday. The end of 1978 marked theopening of the grandstand extensionbuilding which was built adjacentto the existing grandstand. The newgrandstand is a commendable pieceof architecture that cost about Rm4.5million and took two years to build.Thisextension,whichprovidesseatingfor3,000andstandingroomfor2,000,broughttheclub’scapacityto8,000. Thenewbuildingwithtwotiersof public gallery and split level rowsof chairs, gives an unobstructed view

of racing. The top floor houses theVip suite, luxuriously finished withboxed in windows and skylights thatallowfornaturallightingoftheloungebehindtheviewingboxes.Therewerealso cafeterias on thefirst and secondfloors. The year 1980 was a verybusy one for the club. it marked thecompleteinstallationofaclosed-circuittelevision system and also a newcomputerised tote sell/pay system. indecember that year, the yang dipertuanegerigoldcupmeetingwastransmitted to the perak Turf club,markingthefirst-ever“live”telecastofracesonthelocalcircuit. The year 2000 was also asignificant one for the penang Turfclub. firstly, the club co-hosted the27thasianRacingconferencewith theSingaporeTurfclub. The same year, the club stagedthefirstmillion-ringgitraceinmalaysiawiththerunningoftheyangdipertuanegerigoldcup.

in 2003, penang Turf clubadded a second million-ringgit raceto its calendar when prizemoney forthe Sprint Trophywas raised to Rm1millionwith the sponsorship ofastrowahlaiToi. in2009,stakesforthemalaysianmagic millions classic was raised toRm1million,makingpenangTurfclubthefirst tostages threemillion-ringgitracesinthecountry. Refurbishment of the mainracingtrackcommencedon5july2010and was completed on 31 december2010. it was re-opened for racing inmarch2011.atotalofRm16.5millionwasspenttore-turfandtoimprovethedrainagesystemoftheracetrack. The grass training track hadundergone repair and restorationworks from1 january2012. itwas re-openedfortraininginmay2012.withthese two upgrading works, penangTurf club’s horse racing and trainingtracks are considered tobeoneof thebestandsafesttracksintheregion.
