Lecturers, students and public sectorunions unite!
DEFEND POST-16 EDUCATIONWHATEVER IT TAKES!!
Socialist Party members in the
University and College Union
(UCU) fully support the national
demonstration organised jointly by the
University and College Union and theNational Union of Students. This is an
excellent step forward in the battle to
defend universities and colleges from
the onslaught planned by the ConDem
government.
ATTACKS ON UCU MEMBERS
Cuts to universities and colleges are
proposed that are the most viscous of any
previous government including Thatcher!
There is no doubt that in practice this means
the planned privatisation of the university
sector!! So, while students face massivefees increases, reduced contact hours
and poorer resources, staff face attacks
on jobs, pensions, workloads and pay. For
university and college staff, the pensions
issue has incensed all union members,
threatening currently to devastate the
Universities Superannuation Scheme.
And all this because we are asked to
pay for a crisis caused by the greed and
recklessness of bankers and the rich!
Whilst the Labour Partys only answer is
to do the same as the Tories and Liberals,
but slightly slower!!
UCU ACTION NEEDED TO
DEFEND JOBS AND PENSIONS
UCU needs to ensure that national action is
taken over jobs, pensions and privatisation,
to protect a system of education and
research that it took centuries to build up
and which, through public funding, was
able to enhance the lives of thousands.
If a national strike against job losses
contravenes the viscious anti-trade union
laws then each university and college
should ballot for action on the same day.
Such action could defeat the employers.
OPPOSE THE
INCREASE IN TUITION FEES
For all the election promises of the Lib
Dems to oppose tuition fee increases, they
have now embraced the Tory agenda with
plans to allow 9,000 per year tuition fees
for undergraduate courses - 27,000 for
a 3 year degree course! On this basis not
only will working class students be barred
entirely from the elite Russell Group of
universities, but the daughters and sons
of professional workers and the better
paid will not be able to afford this - or
at least face massive debts for years tocome. Disgracefully, post-graduate and
non- European students are likely to pay
even more.
BUILD LINKS WITH
ANTI-CUTS CAMPAIGNS
UCU and NUS need to build links with local
and national anti-cuts campaigns and
other TUC-affiliated unions To demand the
complete abolition of fees and enhanced
public funding for teaching and research -
demands that could win wide support.

Back the PCSs fight for a national
demo in 2010
Build the anti-cuts movement
The PCS NEC has published its
response to the Comprehensive
Spending Review. In it they express
their determination that a national demo
against cuts be called before Christmas,
saying:
The TUC has now confirmed 26
March 2011 as the date for a national
demonstration against the Coalition
Governments agenda of cuts and
privatisation.
PCS had argued strongly for an earlier
national demonstration to coincide with
the CSR. Despite that not being agreed,
PCS members played an active role in
the success of local demonstrations on
23 October across the UK, including in
Edinburgh, London, Cardiff, Wrexham,
Bristol, Leeds, Sheffield, York, Cambridge,
Norwich and elsewhere.
At its special meeting on 26 October, the
NEC agreed, given the speed with which
the Governments cuts will impact and the
success of the 23 October marches and
protests, that a national demonstration
should be held this year in late November
or early December, in addition to the demo
next March. We will be discussing this
with other unions and will propose at the
TUC Public Sector Liaison Group meeting
on 8 November that the TUC call such a
demonstration.
A further branch briefing will follow,
once the date is agreed for this earlier
demonstration.
The Socialist Party welcomes the PCSs
decision and is confident that such a
demonstration will receive widespread
support from across the trade union
movement. The National Shop
Stewards Network
which lobbied
the TUC Congress
supporting the
PCSs call for a
national demo
and then helped
initiate the Londond e m o n s t r a t i o n
and others on 23
October will have an important role to play
in building support for a demonstration.
Nothing will be finalised before the TUC
Public Services Liaison Group on 8
November. However, the Socialist Party is
confident the PCS and other unions are
determined that a national demonstration
against cuts and youth unemployment will
take place this year.
The Socialist Party appeals to all trade
union branches to pass the motion below
appealing to their trade union executives
and the TUC general council to support the
PCSs call for a demonstration.
