The Enric Miralles Foundation and the Universitat Politécnica de Catalunya (UPC) are collaborating to host a specialized course in the process of integrated urban regeneration.

Based on the way of thinking and working of Enric Miralles and learning his methodology and his technique, and by joining the way of doing of Miralles Tagliabue EMBT the students will specialize on contemporary sustainable integrated urbanism.

The course aims to give students the necessary skills to develop an urban project from start to finish, participants will create their own proposals for the “2017 Grand Paris Clichy-Montfermeil suburbs of Paris” project by integrating all necessary theoretical and practical aspects on urbanism and creative design development.

The course integrates theory, practice and design and the disciplines of architecture and the city with the analytical discipline of research, while maintaining a timely relevance to the contemporary world’s challenges of inter-disciplinary knowledge, sustainable urbanism, social inclusion and exclusion, architecture and computing, spatial cognition, the physical and immaterial dimensions of social networks, and a user-centred approach to design innovation.

The program is structured in 9 subjects and special master-classes. Every subject is both theoretical (mornings) and practical (afternoons). We believe in “making while thinking” and generate open discussions.

Case of study - Clichy-Montfermeilmetro station

The students will develop their own proposal for La Grand Paris (www.societedugrandparis.fr/english).

The Grand Paris is an ambitious project to modernize the existing transport network and create a new automatic metro – the Grand Paris Express for the Paris metropolitan area.New significant urban projects are planned to complete the works for this infrastructure.

The station of Clichy Montfermeil and the above surrounding urban space is a particular case because it has a symbolic public intervention in a suburb area that was forgotten and abandoned during a long time.

This neighborhood was the scene of the violent riots that occurred in October and November 2005 when cars and public buildings were burnt. A new station of the Grand Paris Express will be a symbol of the change for these areas.

The project includes the underground station and also the planning of the new square that is to become a central pole in a renewed neighborhood.

It will provide an easy access to the inhabitants their working places all over the Ille de France and in the same time will be a source of Urban renewal and mixed use area.

For its relevance, this station is considered as emblematic for the Grand Paris and the social side of the project has been enhanced.

He is currently the Director of the Urban Ecology Agency of Barcelona, since its foundation on June 5, 2000. He has a degree in Biological Sciences. University of Barcelona, 1976.Degree in Psychology. University of Barcelona, 1980.Diploma in Environmental Engineering. Author of several books, scientific-technical articles and information on urban environment.Scientific advisor / curator of national and international exhibitions.Speaker in masters, postgraduate and national and international congresses. Member of the Urban Environment Expert Group of the European Union (1994-2000).

He is the personification of guerrilla architecture, though he prefers to call himself a citizen. He understands how hard it is for people to improve their own environs and set up the collective Recetas Urbanas (Recipes for the City) to empower other citizens to find loopholes in planning laws to adapt and create their environments – something artists or an architects do by obtaining permits for installations and temporary interventions. He himself has developed a series of subversive projects which explore the complexities of urban life today. These include the occupation of public spaces and containers, building prostheses into facades, patios and empty lots, negotiating a way between legal and illegal zones, reminding us of the pervasive control to which we are all subject.Cirugeda is also known for urban interventions, such as Take Back the Streets, in which he placed a skip in the centre of Seville which could be used as a swing, a stage, a mini-skate park, a small pond with a fountain, a flowerbed or even a swimming pool. In 2007, he published the book Situaciones Urbanas, in which he presented a wide variety of projects, along with their legal ramifications and social impact. His work is therefore about the possibility of action, appropriation, occupation and use, wherein the citizen can act as initiator, using the guidelines and instructions set out by Cirugeda, to build, display or create space. He received the 2015 RIBA International Fellowships.
