New European Colonies

French and Dutch Settlements

Samuel de Champlain French Explorer In 1603 explored the

St. Lawrence River in present day Canada. He had hoped to find

the Northwest Passage.

In 1608 he founded the French colony of Quebec.

French and Dutch Settlements

Henry Hudson English sea captain

that sailed for Dutch leaders.

His reason for exploring was to find new water routes to Asia-He also searched for the Northwest Passage.

Hudson claimed a river in the name of the Dutch, it is known today as the Hudson River.

The Northwest Passage

Explorers have been searching for the Northwest Passage for over 100 years.

The Northwest Passage was a waterway that connected the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

The Northwest Passage was never found because it DID NOT EXIST!!!!!

Quebec

The colony of Quebec was a great location for a colony because millions of beavers lived in the forests of this region.

Beaver fur could be sold for huge profits in Europe.

Quebec began a thriving center of trade.

French and Dutch Settlements

The French started other colonies in North America such as Montreal. The French colonies were called New France.

The Dutch colonies became known as New Netherland. Netherlands is another

name for Holland, the country of the Dutch.

New Amsterdam

In 1624 Dutch settlers began to build a new settlement on Manhattan Island (part of New York today).

They called this settlement New Amsterdam.

This was a great location for a colony because the Dutch could then control trade along the Hudson River

New Amsterdam

The Dutch invited people from many countries to live in New Netherland. Settlers from Belgium,

France, Germany, Finland, Norway and many other countries came to live in these settlements
