Questions, Discussion & Practical
An Opportunity
This is an opportunity to ask the questions that you have
always been afraid to ask
If you don’t know, then chances are, others won’t know
Remember – There is no such thing as a stupid
question. There are only stupid answers!
Ask questions as we go, but I might say “The answer to
that question comes later”.
What is Social Media?
What is Social Media?
Online / Internet facilities that allow and encourage
personal interaction
“Social media is the collective of online communications
channels dedicated to community-based input, interaction,
content-sharing and collaboration”
Social media technologies take on many different forms
including blogs, business / social networks, forums, photo
sharing, product / service reviews, virtual worlds, etc.
Social media helps to build relationships

Social Media - Websites
Strictly speaking websites are not social media (unless they
provide interactive facilities)
Websites play a key role as they are “shop windows”
Cost of a website can be very little to very expensive
Creating and maintaining a website usually requires tools

Anyone can access a website using a free browser
Good websites render content differently on computers,
tablets, and mobile phones

How I use Social Media
How I use Social Media - Photography
My workflow with a new batch of photos:
I take photos at a location, or event, or for a commission
I select a small number of the best (between 4 and 15)
I upload a few to my website www.photomaestro.co.uk
I upload more to my blog www.photomaestro.wordpress.com
(Images on PhotoBucket http://s472.photobucket.com )
I “pin” from my website and blog to Pinterest, automatically
linking back. http:pinterest.com/rhysjones
Shared Boards encourage engagement and commitment
I update my email signature with latest links
Not the only way, or the best way. Just my way
How I use Social MediaFrom time to time:
I use Buffer and SocialOomph to schedule daily posts to
Twitter - https://twitter.com/photomaestro
LinkedIn - http://uk.linkedin.com/in/rhysbmjones
Once each day I look to see which images have been
copied or liked on Pinterest, and I post just one to
Instagram www.instagram.com/rhysbmjones and to local
Facebook Groups such as Droitwich and Beyond
Occasionally I post on my Facebook page for our self
catering flat in St Ives www.facebook.com/middledeck
My only costs are the Domain, the website and email
boxes. All my social media tools are free.

How to help promote SPS
How you can help - WebsiteOur “shop window” to the world.
Demonstrate that we are a vibrant and welcoming society.
Provide photos, particularly from SPS organised events
Provide news and interesting information
Have a Member Gallery on the website (only 17 at present)
How you can help - FacebookGrow our audience and attract new members
“Like” posts on our Facebook Page
Comment on posts on our Facebook Page
“Share” posts on our Facebook Page.
“Likes”, Comments, and “Shares” are best done in your own
name, not that of the society (use dropdown menu)
Invite your Facebook Friends to “like” our Facebook Page
Have a gallery on our Facebook Page
Post photos into your own gallery or specified galleries
Promote society events – before, during, and after the event
Facebook is fast moving. Little and often is best. 5 photos
on each of 4 days is better than 20 photos on one day.
