War affects everyone in some way, whether directly or indirectly. It results in violence

and death, however sometime war is necessary in order to find peace. War is

destructive, but it is sometimes done to protect people or to fight for freedom. There are

many different views about war, such as contemporary attitudes, the teachings of the

Church, Jesus teachings, and of course my own personal opinions.

War is most commonly defined as a state of armed conflict between different

nations or states or different groups within a nation or state. There are three types of

war that can be broken down into many different categories. First theirs conventional

warfare, this is an attempt to reduce an opponents military capability through the act of

war. There are many types of this that include defensive warfare, offensive warfare,

jungle warfare, border warfare, urban warfare, desert warfare, trench warfare and arctic

warfare. The next type of war is civil war. This is a war that is fought for control over a

country. The forces at war belong to the same nation. Asymmetric warfare is the third

kind of war. This is a conflict between two populations. The most famous war is World

War II. In this war over 35 million people lost their lives. This includes both soldiers and

civilians, men and women who have families along with children who lost their lives in

the line of fire. One of the most devastating thing about this war is that 66% of the

people killed were innocent civilians caught in the line of fire. This is a insane amount

considering in World War I out of all the people killed only 6% were civilians. World War

II began on september 1, 1939 and ended on september 2, 1945. The war lasted

exactly 6 years and 1 day. The start of the war was mainly due to the rise of Hitler. This

war is known to be the worst war ever. No a days many people are facing the hardship

of war. There are 10 countries currently at war which include Balkans, Uzbekistan,

Kashmir, Philippines, Colombia, Zimbabwe, Burundi, Indonesia, Venezuela and Angola.

The contemporary attitudes surrounding the topic of war are many people support the

war and support the troops in other countries but at the same time many people are

against it and believe that war is never the answer. The catechism of the Catholic

church states; 2314 "Every act of war directed to the indiscriminate destruction of whole

cities or vast areas with their inhabitants is a crime against God. This is say thing that

any act of war that causes total destruction of a city or large area is against god. 2327

Because of the evils and injustices that all war brings with it, we must do everything

reasonably possible to avoid it. Basically avoid war the best you can. 2308 All citizens

and all governments are obliged to work for the avoidance of war. Try to avoid war.

Jesus teaches about war in the new testament as he says; "You have heard that it was

said, `Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If

someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also." (Matthew 5:43-44)

"You have heard that it was said, `Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell

you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you," (Matthew 5:38-39). The

words Jesus taught about war were very clear as he tells his followers not to fight their

enemies under any circumstance. By him saying this it must also mean we should not

have war. My moral position on the topic is I think war should be avoided at all cost but I

also believe sometimes it cannot be avoided.

War is a part of life for all people, whether they are affected directly or indirectly it

is unavoidable. The catholic church has strong opinions that state war should be
