Social Housing Scheme Report 2015

Local authorities submitted applications for direct building programmes with approval being granted to over 100 projects in just two months. Further assessments will be carried out throughout the rest of the year with some projects requiring planning approval. All will be completed by 2017.

Dublin local authorities have received the most funding for the first phase of the Government’s Social Housing Strategy with a total of 19 new housing projects set to get underway across Dublin thanks to the investment of over €115 million.

In the South Dublin County Council district, 203 housing units will be constructed, 147 units in Dublin City Council, 107 units in Fingal County Council and 89 units in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council. Other areas of interest are Limerick City and County Council getting 110 housing units costing €20 million, Meath County Council getting 83 units costing €17 million and Cork City and County Council getting 116 units costing €22 million.

Introduction to the Social Housing Scheme Report 2015

In May 2015 the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Alan Kelly, TD, and the Minister of State for Housing, Planning & Construction, Paudie Coffey, TD, announced the first major direct build Social Housing Programme.

Over 100 separate housing projects are expected to commence as part of Phase 1 of the Social Housing Strategy. This phase will create upwards of 3,000 construction jobs and over 1,700 social housing units will become available by 2017. In Phase 1, a total of €312 million has been allocated to social housing projects as part of the Government’s €3.2 billion social housing strategy.

The move is part of the Government’s €4 billion social housing strategy to deliver 35,000 housing units by 2020. Based on the most recent housing needs assessment report, the Government's objective is to reduce the national housing waiting list by 25% . The projects, which cut across each local authority area, range in size from small numbers of units to projects of over 50 units for some of the Dublin local authorities.
