Port Blair, Dec 8 The Indian Coast Guard, A&N Region organized a massive Plogging Event (picking the litter while jogging) yesterday, to generate awareness amongst masses towards 'Swatch Sagar Abhhiyan', 'Swatcchta Hi Seva' and ill effects of single use plastics under the aegis of Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi's initiative 'Swatcch Bharat Abhhiyan'. Over 600 personnel participated from Coast Guard fraternity including ladies and children in this noble drive. The plogging drive was conducted at Port Blair covering Marina Beach/Park, Corbyn's Cove, Junglighat shore area, Off Shore Road Haddo, GB Pant Hospital, Cellular Jail, Viper Island, Neil Island and all other locations in Andaman & Nicobar Islands having CG presence including Diglipur, Mayabunder, Hutbay, Kamorta and Campbell Bay. Nearly 150 fire personnel carried out the rescue operation and pulled out 67 people from the building. Fire Service official said, 34 fire tenders were pressed into service. A number of artifacts and products are being prepared from coir which are not only helping in utilization of coconut waste but also in generating livelihood to small and marginal farmers. Coir pith compost is one such input which is not efficiently utilized so far in the Islands. Considering the importance of this aspect, ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute had established a demonstration unit for coir pith composting at its Garacharma farm. As a part of the ongoing training programme by Coir Board, Pradhan of Gram Panchayat, Tushnabad requested for a demonstration of coir pith composting technology.
