Where is Your Social SkillsCenter?
• We all agree that social and emotional learning is a developmental domain. Yet most early childhood programs omit a formal center in which children can develop these skills.

What Are You Feeling?• Simple Solutions Educational Services
consulted with Ezzard Charles Montessori School on Chicago’s South Side during the 2007/2008/2009 school years with the help of a quality improvement grant. We discussed using concrete items to help children learn about abstract ideas, like feelings and conflict resolution.
• When there was a conflict the teacher would ask children what they were feeling. These preschool children would then find their names and match them to these feeling faces they created! Creating a conflict resolution center allowed the children to use their literacy skills to find their names, their problem solving skills and language skills to think of solutions and math skill to eliminate solutions. We embedded social emotional learning into academics

Cranky lotion? This is a CEDA Head Start classroom we provide
consultation services to in Bridgeview, Illinois. The teacher calls this area a “safe place”in which children come, and use manipulatives and concrete tools to help them think
about and LEARN about their emotions.

Simple Solution KITS! Teachers NOT Trying
new Ideas? Increase support!• It can be hard to learn something
new and then have to create a whole new area without support. After our trainings the teachers were given tools and given support in the classroom on how to use them.
• We gave Edgewater Early Learning Center in Chicago a “Simple Solutions Kit” It included tools that the teachers could use to create the new centers! The teachers discussed what tools theyliked best and which they would like to try first! Teachers were then more likely to implement new ideas shown at the trainings!
