• I’ll get you in-class back in a few days!
Review
• Cold War?• Iron Curtain?• Expansionism?• Marshall Plan and Truman Doctrine? • Also, Containment…
• What was the outcome of Yalta and Potsdam?
Berlin 1945-1949
• We’ve talked about how the Germany was separated.
• The City of Berlin was situated 175 miles within East Germany (Communist).
• It was divided in the same manner as the country. (US, UK, FR, and USSR).
Berlin
Stalin get’s ticked!
• The new Deutsche Mark was becoming the preferred currency in both east and west.
• The West revitalized (with the Marshall Plan) much faster then the East.
• Stalin witnessed this as a threat to Communism.
A New Berlin
• June 24, 1948. • Stalin blocks all transportation by Rail, Road,
or Canal.• The 2.1 West Berliners were cut off from all
supplies. • The US idea of Containment meant complete
support for its allies in Germany.
Berlin Airlift
• The west began to fly supplies in.
• They calculated caloric intake and amount of food for each person.
• Fish, baked goods, Salt, everything needed to be shipped in.
Perspectives
• The East said it was a futile attempt to save its capitalist position.
• The west (America) said it was proof that nothing could stop progress.
It’s effect• At the height, a plane landed every three
minutes. • Airports got larger and more efficient. • Crews would not leave the planes, just have
unloading crew and take off again. • Over 11 months, 277 804 flights landed.• 17 American and 8 British plans crashed.
The Berlin Wall
• As tensions grew between both east and west, the Russian wanted to stop the drain to Capitalism.
• At midnight on August 12, 1961 the soldiers actually blocked the streets within the city.
• They tore up streets and put barbed wire in. • Soon it grew into a more elaborate fence with
two walls and a distinct no-mans land.
Its development
• Wire fence (1961) • Improved wire fence (1962–1965) • Concrete wall (1965–1975) • Grenzmauer 75 (Border Wall 75) (1975–1989)
Escape
• People still tried to get out. • They were often killed and left in no-mans
land. • Some people stowed away in Cars.

The End of the Wall
• By 1989 the government fell. • The wall officially fell in November 1989.• It took much longer to tear it down, much still
remains. • The guards at this point become a joke and
have no authority. • People pass openly from East to West. • Finally German reunifies in 1990.
LET’S DO SOME MORE WORK!This will be for homework!
