    Sochi International Airport

e Sochi International Airport was completely reno-vated for the Olympic Games. Along the Mzymta Riv-er, Terminal B began to accommodate passengers in2007 for domestic flights. In 2010, the airport was

officially opened and with it terminal C began to op-erate, servicing international companies and businesstravel. Finally, terminal A was completed three monthsago, putting the finishing touches to a brand new com-plex. Its capacity has increased from 1600 to 3800passengers per hour and it is the 7th busiest airport inRussia with 37 companies that serve it. In 2007, 1.5million passengers have travelled against 2.5 last year.2014 should see this figure explode to even greaterheights. e airport is connected by road, bus and abrand new rail network that serves all of the Olympicvenues, but also to the city of Adler and, of course,Sochi. Upon your arrival to the airport in Sochi, you areinstantly greeted by the Olympic rings. e interestingthing about them, they were donated by the London2012 Olympic Games.

Sochi is Russias largest resortcity and the best place by far totake a relaxing holiday. It has a

very warm climate and maybeyou could go sunbathing onthe beach or swimming in the

beautiful Black Sea, if only itwas summer!

So what is there to do in the cityof Sochi? Loads, thats what.eres so much to pack into aday here, youre going to strug-gle to do it in 24 hours, but letsgive it a shot.If youre a culture vulture, thereare plenty of great things to seeand do. You can see world fa-mous art works and local piec-es too at the Sochi Art Galleryand you can learn about Sochiat the Sochi History Museum, opened in 1920. If you want todelve deeper into Russias his-tory you should definitely takea trip to Joseph Stalins summerresidence (dacha) in the Khostadistrict of Sochi. Inside is a mu-seum containing many of the hispersonal belongings and evenStalins waxwork. One rumour

going around is that the place ishaunted by the ghost of Stalin,so watch your back if you visitafter dark!If nature is your thing thoughthen Sochi wont disappoint.Take a walk through the Yewand boxtree wood, a UNESCOworld heritage site, at the baseof Mount Akhun. It boasts a

stunning array of natural life in-cluding two thousand year oldtrees and twenty endangeredspecies. You can also see plen-ty of animal life too in Sochi. Ahuge array of marine life is pres-ent at the Sochi Discovery WorldAquarium, Russias biggestoceanarium. If you like monkeysthere is the Monkey Nursery

On 4 July 2007, at the 119th session of the

    International Olympic Committee, Sochi was

officially designated to become the host city for

the XXII Olympic Winter Games focusing on record

investments in the region, in order to make the

city a world-class winter sports complex. Mission

    accomplished.

Fort Alexandria, was the name of the small town found-ed in 1838 to monitor the coasts of the Black Sea, it

was then surrounded by some small villages and re-named Sochi at the end of the century. After the nameof the stream that flowed through it. A tourist desti-

nation was then created because of the areas uniquequalities. It was in the thirties, and especially after thewar, when Sochi grew as a city, becoming the favor-ite resort for the Soviets. at was nothing though in

comparison with the revolution that has taken placeover the last seven years: an architectural revolutionbut also an economic, touristic and sporting one too.

A total of no less than 206 buildings have emerged,

some from scratch, and only thirty are directly relatedto sport. ese are the most symbolic, of course. efirst is Fisht, the famous Olympic Stadium, named

after one of the Caucasus pykes. e stadium willhost the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. e Bol-shoy, will host ice hockey and it is the first spherical

building of this size in Russia. e Ice Cube whichwill host curling and Iceberg for figure skating andshort-track, which was built out of as much metal as

two Eiffel towers, while Adler-Arena will host the com-petitions in speed skating. e mountains also experi-enced major changes with the building of Rosa KhutorAlpine Centre, which has 9 km of Olympic slopes. Also

the Laura center for biathlon and cross-country skiingwas created and the Gorky Russki ski jumping cen-ter. Sanki for luge, bobsled and skeleton, and Rosa

Khutor X-treme park for Snowboarding and freestylesking was built. Finally the Olympic Park musnt beforgotten, which will house for the first time in Olym-pic history, over 75,000 people and 3 Olympic Villag-

es which will accommodate 6 000 athletes and NOCdelegation members. But the venues are just the tip of the iceberg. To ac-

commodate visitors, the Adler rail hub was built as a

gateway to access Sochi. It can move 1600 to 3800passengers per hour. Krasna Polyana, is now only thirtyminutes from the Olympic Park with the construction

of a new railway track . e incredible infrastructurefigures will make your head spin they are so large, newfacilties have sprang up everywhere, completely chang-

ing the appearance of the area. 367 km of roads andbridges have emerged, as have 201 km of railways and700 km of communication cable. On the tourism and

hospitality side , the city has seen 20,000 new roomsbuilt , bringing the total number to nearly 41,500.All these changes would be impossible if they were notaccompanied by a strong environmental ethos. e re-

gion can now highlight its natural history and beauty, and now has more than 30,000 acres of trees, gar-dens and preserved natural areas, containing unique

flora and fauna.Sochi has changed so much over the past seven yearsbut this is not the end for the burdgeoning Russiancity. Sochi will play host to the new Russian Formula

One race that will take place from 2014 and it is setto run until 2021. e track is called the Sochi Interna-tional Street Circuit and is 5.8 km long. It will weave

between the arenas of the Coastal Cluster. e Fisht

stadium will play host to a number of matches at the2018 football World Cup.e future is bright for Sochi.

Te time has come and officials

    representing countries from all over

the world have been arriving in Sochi

in earnest expectation for the weeks

    ahead.

Te Olympic Villages open early as partof the Pre-Opening on 24 January.Te early opening of the Villages allowsNOCs to get a head start on their dutiesbefore their athletes arrive. CountriesNOC officials get the chance to becomeacquainted with the Villages and findtheir respective operating areas.NOCs are the link between the OlympicVillages and venues and the athletes.Tey provide key services which couldmean success or failure to an athletewhen they take to the ice or the snow. It

may not be a glamorous role comparedto competing for your nation but theymake up the key parts of how an Olym-pic team functions.Upon arriving NOCs have immediate ac-cess to their residencies, offices, work-shops and storage spaces in the Villageor Villages they will be working from sothat they can begin Games-time opera-tions as soon as possible.Tey have time to learn the layout of theOlympic Villages and the specifics of thedifferent services the athletes will re-quire during the Games. Te NOCs learnit first so that they can relay the informa-tion to their athletes, who need to befully prepared come Games time.Amongst the first countries to arrive atthe USADBA village was New Zealand. After collecting their accreditation cards

for Sochi 2014, the team look thrilledto be finally getting their first glimpsesof the USADBA village and what theGames might have in store for them.Libby Peckham, the eam Services Coor-dinator for New Zealand, was also veryexcited to have arrived. She said, I work as part of team opera-tions, a logistics role. I look after the NewZealand team and where they live in theOlympic Villages. My first Olympic Gamesas an NOC official was London 2012.

Te facilities are amazing here and inthe mountains. I was actually here a yearago for the test events in the mountains.I cant wait to get up there.

I am going to see freestyle skiing andhopefully will get see some other eventsthat New Zealands athletes are com-

peting in.We have three brothers on the NewZealand Olympic team this year, [Beau-James Wells, Byron Wells and JossiWells] who are all competing in newevents for Sochi 2014.Other countries who also arrived on thefirst day of the Pre-Opening of the Vil-lages were Great Britain and Hong-Kong.Te arrival of these officials for the Pre-Opening marks the beginning of some-thing great for Sochi 2014. It is the firstchance for volunteers and OCOG staff tobegin their roles and start enjoying thetrials and tribulations that an OlympicsGames has to offer. You can feel the excitement building inSochi as NOCs from all over the worldbegin to arrive. Good luck to everyoneand enjoy your time in the Villages!
