Grand Knight’s Message Fall is definitely here and as I

promised last Compass News our Council Program is now in full swing. It has been a really busy couple months and I have enjoyed seeing everyone at the various events we have had in the last two months. I am happy to see the mix of old and new faces helping out.

There are a number of events coming up that I wanted to draw your attention to and ask for your support with as “many hands make light work”. The St. James Harvest Festival is November 2-4, the Knights will be manning the Lemonade Booth as usual throughout the weekend. Please email Vince Barbarie or Chris Charan if you can help out for a couple hours at some point over the weekend. There was a signup sheet that went around at the last meeting but there are still some shifts open. We were planning to have a Habitat for Humanity work day on November 10th but I was notified that Habitat had to postpone the event due to personnel availability please look for a new date sometime next year. The next 2 months will have a couple of great events that I hope to see a big turnout for. First our November 19th open meeting will be our annual Memorial Mass at the Hall, we celebrate mass together as brothers remembering

our deceased Brothers that have gone to rest before us, please be on the lookout in your email for the time once I confirm it with Fr. Peter. Second, is the Annual Christmas Party on December 15th at 1pm, please invite your families, friends, as well as any prospective Knights and their families there will be food, activities for the kids, and Santa will be there with gifts for the kids as well.

We also have a monthly dinner on the November 16th please bring your family and friends to eat, I think it is one of the best deals going for a dinner out and goes to a great cause. There will be a 4th degree call out for Veteran’s Day at St. John Fisher, as well as Coffee and Doughnuts at both St. Lawrence and St. James in November and December.

Some of the events that we supported the last few months were: The Soccer Challenge at the AYSO opening day we had about 23 kids compete and gave out awards on 10/28 to honor the winners. Monthly Fundraising Dinners in both September and October to support our charities. We provided food at the St. John Fisher parish BBQ as a fundraising and recruitment event. We had a great turnout for all of these events and did a good job raising money to support our Seminarians as well as our other Charities.

As far as donations the last 2 months we sent our installment checks to the 6 seminarians that we support as well as the House of Yahweh.

Thanksgiving and Christmas will be upon us in the next two months and I want to take this time to thank all of you for the work that you do and examples that you set within the Knights, our Parishes and our broader Community. The faith, selflessness, and care for others that you all display is a light in what seems an increasingly selfish world.

Thank you again for your support and trust in me this year.

St. Edward, which eventually changed its name to Church of Our Lady of Consolation. There was a great desire for a replica of the statue of Our Lady of Consolation that exists in the Cathedral in Luxembourg to be brought to the church in Carey. A member of the local parish who still had relatives in the old country agreed to return to Luxembourg to have a replica made and brought back to Carey. In March of 1875, the statue made of oak and which could be dressed and adorned with jewels, made its way to Carey, OH. Fr. Gloden was filled with joy at the sight of the statue as were many of the church’s parishioners who asked that it might be carried in procession from a parish in nearby Frenchtown to the church in Carey. Fr. Gloden hesitated for quite some time, fearing to offend the rather large

The Story of Our

Lady of Consolation This past August, I was

able to participate in the nine-day novena to celebrate the Assumption of Mary into Heaven at the Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey, OH. This shrine is a basilica about one and half hour drive from the city of Columbus and has been administered by our Conventual Franciscan community since 1912. The devotion to Our Lady of Consolation originated in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg which enjoys the patronage of “Mary, Consoler of the Afflicted”. Immigrants from Luxembourg came to the United States and settled in the mid-West, especially in Ohio and like many other immigrants Catholics brought with them the traditional piety of their homeland. Fr. Joseph Peter Gloden, a Catholic priest from Luxembourg, came to the Carey community with instructions from Bishop Amadeus Rapp, Bishop of Cleveland, to organize a Catholic congregation. In 1867, Fr. Gloden built the church of

Protestant community of Carey. After considerable reflection, he decided to go ahead with the procession, and desired to give Our Lady of Consolation the most solemn entry possible into Carey. The procession date was May 24, 1875, the feast of Mary Helper of All Christians. The procession attracted thousands of people all over Ohio. But what people remember most of all is the miraculous events that took place during the procession.

A severe storm with strong winds and thunder passed through the community followed by heavy rains. On the morning of 24th of May, 1875 it continued to rain heavily during the mass. Fr. Gloden was hesitant to allow the procession to proceed, but he decided the people would be sorely disappointed if they did not get to carry Our Lady to the Shrine Church in Carey. What happened was as soon as the statue was brought to the entrance of the Church, the sun pierced the clouds and was shining on the whole line of the procession all the way to about a mile from Carey, while it was continually thundering and lightning on both sides of the procession. When they came to within a mile from the village of Carey, the clouds from both sides clashed together right in front of the procession, and it seemed

(Continued from page 6) impossible for the statue to reach the church before the rain would pour down upon the pilgrims. But at last, the statue of Our Lady of Consolation reached the church and scarcely had it entered the church when all of a sudden the rain poured down like a cloudburst and hardly anyone found time to enter the church or seek shelter elsewhere to escape the rain. This remarkable event made a deep impression upon both Protestants and Catholics alike and from that time on, people began to come to Carey from far and near to implore the help of Our Lady of Consolation in all kinds of afflictions. Fr. Gloden continued to tell stories of many cures being reported through the years. In 1912, the Conventual Franciscans were invited to administer the shrine church and have been there ever since. In 1925, a larger church was built to accommodate the

Week (NVAW) is an annual

Catholic Church in the United

States dedicated to promote

vocations to the priesthood,

through prayer and education,

and to renew our prayers and

support for those who are

considering one of these

large numbers of people who come to offer prayers and gratitude. In 1935, the Conventual Franciscans established a seminary adjacent to the shrine church. The Shrine would be frequented by pilgrims during the era of World War II when anxious families prayed for the return of their sons and brothers serving overseas, and many a lucky service member came to the Shrine to offer thanks for a safe return. In 1956, additional land adjacent to the shrine was bought and turned into a Shrine Park to accommodate ten thousand worshipers for the main celebration of Our Lady of Consolation, who gathered on August 15 for the feast of the Assumption. In 1971, Pope St. Paul VI raised the church of Our Lady of Consolation to the status of a basilica. It continues to attract many devoted pilgrims, including members of the Chaldean Catholic communities who have migrated to the mid-west from the Middle East,

The October Monthly Dinner

The dinner was not as well attended as we like. Perhaps half the crowd of the Rib dinner in September. We believe the LA Dodgers game had something to do with it as it appeared we were in good company with our

neighbor restaurants.

It was still a nice evening with our regulars, all the priests from St James and a number of Knights that usually come to these

dinners.

As far as the seasonal tickets, our sales are off a bit, perhaps half of what we had last year. I kept hearing the answer from a number of Knights that they could not make all the dinners. I have to agree that I cannot make all the dinners either, however we still try to support our charities by being a seasonal ticket holder, plus it gives you more incentive to

come down to the dinners.

When people call me in regards to coming to the dinner I try to remind them that even if it isn’t their favorite meal the money goes to helping others and that is the point of charity

dinners.

In fact we have some people that come and pay for two dinners when they are have one or a couple buying 3 dinners with the 3rd as a contribution. What a

win, making a contribution to a cause of helping seminarians, girls that go to pregnancy help center because they have no where else to turn or star house

and you get food on top of that.

We will have one more dinner this calendar year, menu unknown, lets call it charities that need our help as Thanksgiving is coming and no place better to go to give thanks than a charity to help those that need help. On top of that you get to join your fellow Knights and families in a relaxed environment of conversation and a drink if you visit bar to toast your good fortune to be on the giving side to help others and enjoy and

evening in good company.

See you at the next dinner,

Nick Tesi, Season Ticket Holder

Dear Brother Knights and families, On Sept. 22, 2018, we were blessed with the Priestly Ordination of Father Basil Ozor at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Okigwe, Nigeria. Our Council has helped support Father Basil over the past several years. We wish to thank Father Rowland Nwokocha, who traveled to Nigeria and sent us

these photos.

Please continue to pray for our

priests and seminarians.

In Christ,

Brian Nelson
