Stephens. said. Alvarado. had. to. guard.against. “settling”. in. the. offseason. after.last.year’s.playoff.run.
“We. still. haven’t. finished. higher. than.fourth. in. district,”. he. said.. “This.may. be.one. of. the. smartest. groups. of. defenders.we’ve.had.since.I’ve.been.here.”

The.Lady.Spartans.are.led.by.Kara.Cuellar.who.said.the.out-look.is.bright.
“Next.year.will.be.our.first.senior.class,”.she.said..“We.have.sophomore.Koryann.Clark.who. is.coming.back.and.another.one.is.sophomore.Ashley.Ledford.”

“I.definitely.want.that.to.be.a.goal,”.she.said..“We.want.to.do.well.in.district.and.go.to.the.playoffs..We.have.a.chance.to.make.some.history.and.have.a.strong.foundation.and.a.strong.tradition.

The. Joshua.Owls.pieced. together. a. third-place. finish. in.Dis-trict.15-4A.last.year.before.losing.to.Arlington.Seguin,.3-0,.in.the.playoffs.
This.year,.they’re.back.with.a.chance.to.get.back.to.the.post-season.again,.said.Head.Coach.Gary.Walker.
“We’ve.got.most.of.the.defense.coming.back,”.he.said..“We’re.going. to. be. pretty. solid..We’re. not. going. to. be. very. deep,. but.we’ll.be.solid.at.every.position.”
Walker.pinpointed.players.such.as.defender.Ever.Cisneros.and.goalie. Jason.Sigmon. as. players.who. could. help. boost. the.Owls.back.into.the.playoffs.
“It.was.Sigmon’s.first.year.in.the.net.last.year.as.a.junior,”.he.said..“He’s.a.senior.now.
“Most.of.the.guys.that.were.here.were.there.last.year.”Walker.mentioned.Kelsey.Bessent.and.Alexis.Noriega.as.two.

“We.were. third. last.year. and.played.Seguin. in. the.playoffs,”.he. said.. “They.had. those. top. two. scorers. and. beat. us..Our. first.goal.is.always.to.get.back.to.the.playoffs..Last.year,.we.had.peo-ple.who.were.not. playing. in. the. correct. position. and.were.only.there.by.necessity.

Lady Owls bringing back plenty of familiar faces
By Zack [email protected]
The.Joshua.Lady.Owls.have.an.influx.of.youth. to.deal.with.for. the.2012.season,.but.Head.Coach.Jeff.Brooks.isn’t.complaining.
“Any. time.you. can.bring.back.14.or. 15.people,. obviously. that’s. a. plus,”. he. said..“Their. attitudes.are. to.work. for.each.other..They.genuinely.like.each.other.and.it.makes.it.really.fun.”
The. Lady. Owls. went. 15-3-4. last. year.with. a. 6-1-3. mark. in. District. 15-4A. play,.which. was. good. enough. for. third. place..They.lost.to.Crowley,.1-0,.in.the.first.round.of.the.playoffs.on.a.late.penalty.kick,.a.loss.that.has.stuck.with.Brooks.
When.asked.about. the.mantle.of. leader-ship. left. behind. with. the. departure. of. re-cord-setting. Kaitlyn. Martindale,. Brooks’.answer.was.simple.
“We. have. 19. girls.who. are. leaders,”. he.said..“We.expect.everyone.to.be.a.leader.and.carry.that.responsibility.
“Every.season. is. so.different..We’re.go-ing. to.miss. our. three. seniors.we. graduated.last. year. because. they.were. all. great. play-ers.”
Joshua.will. be.without.Yevette. Bessent,.Shelby.Stowe.and.Martindale. this.year,.but.Brooks.said.his.team.is.ready.to.continue.the.Lady.Owl.playoff.tradition.
“I.feel.really.confident.about.who.we’ve.got,”. he. said.. “You. can’t. ever. replace. a.player. one. for. one,. they. all. bring. different.gifts.and.talents.to.the.table.
“Every.year.we.want.to.fit.our.scheme.to.the. personnel.. We. want. to. attack. and. put.pressure. on. the. opposition. everywhere. on.the.field..That.hasn’t.changed.in.a.long.time..Obviously,.that.part.of.how.we.play.is.going.to.continue.”
The. Lady. Owls. return. juniors. Amber.Campbell,.Morgan.Rinehart,.Samantha.Sei-bold,. Courtney. Cox,. Haley. Wright,. Lori.Gaskill,. Bailey. Crocker. and. Alyssa. Wil-
liams.Joshua. has. two. seniors. in. Amber. West.
and. Sami. Rios.. Sophomores. Payton. Boyd,.Angel.Brigmon,.Leighann.Lewis,.Sky.Plum-mer. and. Jordan. Higgins. will. see. time. this.year.along.with.freshmen.Shelby.Gray,.Hay-ley.Rohleder.and.Julia.Tucker.
Brooks.added.that.with.a.lot.of.his.play-ers.participating.in.other.sports.such.as.cross.country,.the.Lady.Owls.are.in.better.shape.in.the. early. part. of. the. season. than. they. have.been.in.the.past.
“We.have.a.lot.of.people.who.have.been.doing.a.lot.of.things,”.he.said..“We’ve.got.a.lot.of.people. in. really.good.shape.which. is.good.because.it.fits.into.our.style.of.play.
“They.get.the.game.and.have.enough.ex-perience.to.know.where.the.next.pass.needs.to.go.”
Brooks.said.the.Lady.Owls’.attitude.will.benefit.them.greatly.this.year.
“They’re.very.positive.and.have.a. lot.of.support,”.Brooks.said..“In.the.big.scheme.of.things,. that’s.more. important. than.anything.strategic.we.can.coach.”
