Alvarado. lost. to. the. Jaguars,. 3-0,. at.Newsom.Stadium.in.Mansfield.

Alvarado. has. shown. improvement.

since. Israel. Stephens. has. been. the. head.coach,.going.from.1-16.in.2009.to.10-13-2.last.year..The. Indians.were.4-6. in.district.play.

“We’ll.have.a.brand-new.defense,”.Ste-phens.said..“We’ll.build.it.around.Luis.Sa-linas.and.Tidwell..Justin.played.a.lot.more.toward. the. end. of. the. year. last. year. and.we.always.matched.him.up.against.the.top.player.we.faced.”

Stephens. acknowledged. the. Indians,.who.play.in.Class.3A.in.every.other.sport,.aren’t. going. to. be. the. biggest. or. fastest,.

but.said.Alvarado.is.restoring.pride.to.the.soccer.program.

“One. of. the. harder. things. to. do. has.been.to.raise.expectations,”.he.said..“One.of. the. things. [Jeff]. Dixon. has. tried. to.change. throughout. was. this. mindset.. We.teach.them.that.if.we.believe.in.ourselves,.we.can.achieve.those.loftier.expectations.”

Stephens. said. Alvarado. had. to. guard.against. “settling”. in. the. offseason. after.last.year’s.playoff.run.

“We. still. haven’t. finished. higher. than.fourth. in. district,”. he. said.. “This.may. be.one. of. the. smartest. groups. of. defenders.we’ve.had.since.I’ve.been.here.”

Stephens.said. the.Indians. take.pride. in.only.being.shut.out.three.times.last.year.

“Blas. and.Adam. are. going. to. have. to.pick.it.up.this.year,”.he.said..“It’s.good.to.have.both.of.the.Torres.brothers.back.”

Tommy Brown/Special to the Times-ReviewAlvarado’s Andrew Torres, left, returns in 2012 with his brother Adam after the Indians made the playoffs for the first time last year.

Ryan O’Donnell set to lead Lady Indians into bright future

By Zack [email protected]

The.Alvarado.Lady.Indians.are.in.the.midst.of.a.resurgence.on.the.soc-cer.field..They.made.the.playoffs.last.year.for.the.second.year.in.a.row..Two.years.ago,.Alvarado.had.never.sniffed.the.postseason.in.girls’.soccer..Such.is.the.nature.of.Alvarado.athletics.these.days..New.standards.are.being.set.

The.Lady.Indians.have.a.new.coach.for.2012.in.Illinois.native.Ryan.O’Donnell..He.coached.girls’.soccer.there.for.three.years.before.moving.to.Paris,.Texas.where.he.coached.for.three.more.years.and.coached.freshman.football.

“My.wife.is.originally.from.Texas,”.he.said..“She.originally.moved.up.to.be.with.me.in.Illinois,.but.we.moved.back.down.here..Not.only.was.it.better.pay,.but.you.can’t.beat.coaching.football.in.Texas.”

O’Donnell.said.he’s.ready.to.help.lead.the.young.Lady.Indians.back.to.the.playoffs..He.added.the.Lady.Indians.don’t’.have.a.single.senior.on.their.roster.

“Our.two.captains.are.juniors,”.he.said..“We’re.also.starting.three.fresh-men..They’ll.be.full-time.starters.and.they’ll.be.starting.up.top.”

“flores.and.Presley.are.my.two.forwards,”.he.said..“We’re.putting.our.faith.in.two.freshmen.to.be.our.scorers.this.season.”

O’Donnell.added.that.Alvarado.graduated.10.seniors.last.season.“The.people.that.made.first-.or.second-team.all-district.graduated.last.

year,”.he.said..“Those.people.are.gone,.but.we’ve.got.a.lot.of.positives.and.a.lot.of.people.are.saying.we.can.be.pretty.good..Even.though.we’re.a.Class.3A.school.in.a.Class.4A.district.”

Alvarado. competes. against. state-ranked.Granbury. along.with. Joshua.and.Cleburne.in.15-4A.play,.but.O’Donnell.remains.confident..The.Lady.Indians.finished.fourth.last.year.and.played.Summit.in.the.first.round.of.the.playoffs.

“I.like.to.see.a.lot.of.passing.and.possession,.so.I’m.harping.on.us.trying.to.put.that.into.our.philosophy.”

O’Donnell.added.that.there.is.more.interest.now.for.Lady.Indians’.soc-cer.than.ever.in.the.school’s.history.and.said.Alvarado’s.goal.this.year.is.to.achieve.a.No..3.seed.in.the.final.15-4A.standings.

“We.have.more.come.out.for.soccer.than.at.any.other.time.in.the.history.of.the.program,”.he.said.

Ketcham.added.he.doesn’t.expect.there.to.be.any.issues.with.se-nior.move-in.Dulce.Hernandez.

He.said.Haley.and.Rachel.will.continue.to.carry.the.main.mantle.of.leadership.as.the.Lady.Elks.seek.to.get.back.to.the.playoffs.

“They.are.definitely.two.big.pieces.to.the.puzzle,”.he.said..“We’re.going.to.need.good.keeper.play.out.of.Mandy.”

“It’s.really.about.how.we.respond.to.the.situation.with.our.sched-ule.”

Centennial.has.junior.forward.Chris.Johnson.who.scored.23.goals.on.the.JV.team.last.year.along.with.junior.defender.B.J..Rodrick.

“I’m. excited. about. having. Burleson. in. our. district,”. Rose. said..“Since. I. graduated. from. there,. it’s. fun. for.me. to. go. back. and. play.against.them.in.different.roles.and.to.coach.against.my.old.coaches.”

“I’ll.get.to.go.head.to.head.against.two.of.my.old.coaches,”.Rose.said..“I.enjoyed.playing.for.them..I.think.with.the.way.our.district.is.set. up,.we’ve.got. a. chance. to.do. some.good. things..Our.goal. from.there.is.to.make.the.playoffs.

“I.think.we’ve.got.a.chance.to.do.that.”Rose. said. a. tough.nondistrict. schedule. should. pay.dividends. for.

If.the.Centennial.Lady.Spartans’.volleyball.season.was.any.in-dicator.of.what.a.young.school.can.do.in.its.first-ever.varsity.sea-son,. the. Lady. Spartans’. soccer. team. has. plenty. of. reason. for.hope.

The. volleyball. team.made. the. playoffs. in. its. opening. season.and.the.Centennial.soccer.teams,.with.just.freshmen,.sophomores.and.juniors,.have.a.chance.to.do.that.in.District.16-4A.

The.Lady.Spartans.are.led.by.Kara.Cuellar.who.said.the.out-look.is.bright.

“Next.year.will.be.our.first.senior.class,”.she.said..“We.have.sophomore.Koryann.Clark.who. is.coming.back.and.another.one.is.sophomore.Ashley.Ledford.”

Cuellar. said. junior. center. midfielder. Vanesa. Saldivar. is. a.“playmaker”.and.said.her.along.with.Clark.and.Ledford.are.Cen-tennial’s.best.chance.of.success.on.offense.

“We. have. a. few. freshmen.who.made. the. varsity. as. well,. so.we’re.excited.to.see.how.we’re.going.to.do,”.she.said.

Cuellar.said.the.goal.for.the.Lady.Spartans.in.the.first.year.is.to.make.the.playoffs..She.acknowledged.the.road.won’t.be.easy.with.teams.like.Summit,.Seguin,.Kennedale.and.rejuvenated.rival.Burleson.standing.in.the.way.

“I.definitely.want.that.to.be.a.goal,”.she.said..“We.want.to.do.well.in.district.and.go.to.the.playoffs..We.have.a.chance.to.make.some.history.and.have.a.strong.foundation.and.a.strong.tradition.

“There.are.some.hard.teams.ahead.of.us.with.Burleson,.Crow-ley,. Summit. and.Kennedale,. but. our. goal. is. to. place. in. district.whether.it’s.first,.second,.third.or.fourth..It’s.always.been.a.goal.of.mine.to.go.deep.in.the.playoffs.”

Cuellar. said. Centennial’s. talent. may. be. enough. to. help. ac-count. for. the. lack.of. senior. leadership. the.Lady.Spartans.won’t.have.until.next.year.

“It’s.hard.not.having.them,”.she.said..“A.lot.of.these.younger.girls.look.up.to.seniors.and.it’s.good.we.have.those.three.juniors..

Head.Coach.Daniel.Lundy.said.the.expectation.is.to.continue.to.succeed.in.the.postseason.

“I. think. it’s. the. boys’. expectation. as. well,”. he. said.. “They.want. to. advance. further. and. get. to. the. third. or. fourth. round..

Lundy.said.returning.such.key.offensive.pieces.like.frias.and.Vasquez.at.the.keeper.position.works.to.Cleburne’s.benefit.

“Practice-wise,.we.look.better,”.he.said..“We’re.going.to.work.the.ball.up.a. lot.more. this.year. instead.of. just.counter-attacking.the.whole.time.

Lundy.said.Granbury.is.likely.still.the.team.to.beat.in.15-4A.“I’d.say.it’s.still.us.and.Granbury.at.the.top,”.he.said..“Hills-

This.year,.they’re.back.with.a.chance.to.get.back.to.the.post-season.again,.said.Head.Coach.Gary.Walker.

“We’ve.got.most.of.the.defense.coming.back,”.he.said..“We’re.going. to. be. pretty. solid..We’re. not. going. to. be. very. deep,. but.we’ll.be.solid.at.every.position.”

“It.was.Sigmon’s.first.year.in.the.net.last.year.as.a.junior,”.he.said..“He’s.a.senior.now.

Lady Owls bringing back plenty of familiar faces

By Zack [email protected]

The.Joshua.Lady.Owls.have.an.influx.of.youth. to.deal.with.for. the.2012.season,.but.Head.Coach.Jeff.Brooks.isn’t.complaining.

“Any. time.you. can.bring.back.14.or. 15.people,. obviously. that’s. a. plus,”. he. said..“Their. attitudes.are. to.work. for.each.other..They.genuinely.like.each.other.and.it.makes.it.really.fun.”

The. Lady. Owls. went. 15-3-4. last. year.with. a. 6-1-3. mark. in. District. 15-4A. play,.which. was. good. enough. for. third. place..They.lost.to.Crowley,.1-0,.in.the.first.round.of.the.playoffs.on.a.late.penalty.kick,.a.loss.that.has.stuck.with.Brooks.

When.asked.about. the.mantle.of. leader-ship. left. behind. with. the. departure. of. re-cord-setting. Kaitlyn. Martindale,. Brooks’.answer.was.simple.

“We. have. 19. girls.who. are. leaders,”. he.said..“We.expect.everyone.to.be.a.leader.and.carry.that.responsibility.

“Every.season. is. so.different..We’re.go-ing. to.miss. our. three. seniors.we. graduated.last. year. because. they.were. all. great. play-ers.”

Joshua.will. be.without.Yevette. Bessent,.Shelby.Stowe.and.Martindale. this.year,.but.Brooks.said.his.team.is.ready.to.continue.the.Lady.Owl.playoff.tradition.

“I.feel.really.confident.about.who.we’ve.got,”. he. said.. “You. can’t. ever. replace. a.player. one. for. one,. they. all. bring. different.gifts.and.talents.to.the.table.

“Every.year.we.want.to.fit.our.scheme.to.the. personnel.. We. want. to. attack. and. put.pressure. on. the. opposition. everywhere. on.the.field..That.hasn’t.changed.in.a.long.time..Obviously,.that.part.of.how.we.play.is.going.to.continue.”

The. Lady. Owls. return. juniors. Amber.Campbell,.Morgan.Rinehart,.Samantha.Sei-bold,. Courtney. Cox,. Haley. Wright,. Lori.Gaskill,. Bailey. Crocker. and. Alyssa. Wil-

liams.Joshua. has. two. seniors. in. Amber. West.

and. Sami. Rios.. Sophomores. Payton. Boyd,.Angel.Brigmon,.Leighann.Lewis,.Sky.Plum-mer. and. Jordan. Higgins. will. see. time. this.year.along.with.freshmen.Shelby.Gray,.Hay-ley.Rohleder.and.Julia.Tucker.

Brooks.added.that.with.a.lot.of.his.play-ers.participating.in.other.sports.such.as.cross.country,.the.Lady.Owls.are.in.better.shape.in.the. early. part. of. the. season. than. they. have.been.in.the.past.

“We.have.a.lot.of.people.who.have.been.doing.a.lot.of.things,”.he.said..“We’ve.got.a.lot.of.people. in. really.good.shape.which. is.good.because.it.fits.into.our.style.of.play.

“They.get.the.game.and.have.enough.ex-perience.to.know.where.the.next.pass.needs.to.go.”

Brooks.said.the.Lady.Owls’.attitude.will.benefit.them.greatly.this.year.

“They’re.very.positive.and.have.a. lot.of.support,”.Brooks.said..“In.the.big.scheme.of.things,. that’s.more. important. than.anything.strategic.we.can.coach.”

Joshua.returns.15.players.from.last.year’s.playoff.squad

Zack Cunningham/Times-ReviewJoshua Head Coach Jeff Brooks, center, watches his team practice at Joshua High School earlier this winter. The Lady Owls finished in third place last year and return 15 players from that team.
