Labeling Theory
• Everyone labels
• Those with power are able to label
someone and make other accept that label
• Labeling can lead to self-fulfilling prophecy
• If the label is especially damaging, it can
become a ‘master status’
![Page 12: Soc101 Deviance & Social Control](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022021500/5a6707957f8b9a91298b5697/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Labeling is a Powerful Mechanism of Social
Control

(symbolic interactionism)
![Page 17: Soc101 Deviance & Social Control](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022021500/5a6707957f8b9a91298b5697/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
key sociological question:
![Page 18: Soc101 Deviance & Social Control](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022021500/5a6707957f8b9a91298b5697/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
structure vs. agency?
![Page 19: Soc101 Deviance & Social Control](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022021500/5a6707957f8b9a91298b5697/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
![Page 20: Soc101 Deviance & Social Control](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022021500/5a6707957f8b9a91298b5697/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
structural approaches: emphasize how
people are influenced by structural
forces
![Page 21: Soc101 Deviance & Social Control](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022021500/5a6707957f8b9a91298b5697/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
(functionalism + conflict theory)
![Page 22: Soc101 Deviance & Social Control](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022021500/5a6707957f8b9a91298b5697/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
How much agency do individuals
have?
![Page 23: Soc101 Deviance & Social Control](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022021500/5a6707957f8b9a91298b5697/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
social action theories: emphasize how
individuals operate in society as
relatively free agents, creating identities
through symbols and interactions
![Page 24: Soc101 Deviance & Social Control](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022021500/5a6707957f8b9a91298b5697/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
(symbolic interactionism)
![Page 25: Soc101 Deviance & Social Control](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022021500/5a6707957f8b9a91298b5697/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
What makes someone evil?
![Page 26: Soc101 Deviance & Social Control](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022021500/5a6707957f8b9a91298b5697/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Is it their individual agency?
![Page 27: Soc101 Deviance & Social Control](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022021500/5a6707957f8b9a91298b5697/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
Or social structure?
![Page 28: Soc101 Deviance & Social Control](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022021500/5a6707957f8b9a91298b5697/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
Erving Goffman (1922-1982)
![Page 29: Soc101 Deviance & Social Control](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022021500/5a6707957f8b9a91298b5697/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
dramaturgy: we use “impression
management” to present ourselves to
others as we hope to be perceived.
Each situation is a new scene, and
individuals perform different roles
depending on who is present.
![Page 30: Soc101 Deviance & Social Control](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022021500/5a6707957f8b9a91298b5697/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
The Performed Self
![Page 31: Soc101 Deviance & Social Control](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022021500/5a6707957f8b9a91298b5697/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
Goffman: no stable inner
core of identity
![Page 32: Soc101 Deviance & Social Control](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022021500/5a6707957f8b9a91298b5697/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
what does this mean…
![Page 33: Soc101 Deviance & Social Control](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022021500/5a6707957f8b9a91298b5697/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
…about what makes someone
evil?
![Page 34: Soc101 Deviance & Social Control](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022021500/5a6707957f8b9a91298b5697/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
If there is no stable inner core of
‘self’
![Page 35: Soc101 Deviance & Social Control](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022021500/5a6707957f8b9a91298b5697/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
then the ‘self’ is shaped by the role,
![Page 36: Soc101 Deviance & Social Control](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022021500/5a6707957f8b9a91298b5697/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
then the ‘self’ is shaped by
institutions,
![Page 37: Soc101 Deviance & Social Control](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022021500/5a6707957f8b9a91298b5697/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
then the ‘self’ is shaped by
structure.
![Page 38: Soc101 Deviance & Social Control](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022021500/5a6707957f8b9a91298b5697/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
