Introduction to METS

“That is NIETS?

The Metadata Extracti on and Tagging Service (MEETS) is a Department ofDefense IntelligenceInformation System (DoD]IS) Core Service that extracts information found within unstructureddocuments. This promotes integration with stmctured data and will signi cantlyimprove search: analysis;and lmowledge discovery. MEETS automates the normalization of, and extraction of information 'om:textdocuments, making the content of the documents quickly available asJ and1 (Web OntologyLanguage] M (Resource Description Framework) for intelligence analysis.

“Thy MEETS?

MEETS has been developed in support of the Defense Intelligence Agency Strategic Plan (Fiscal YEEIIS2 0 04-2 0 09), the "C ontent Tagging Way Ahead" White Paper and Propo s al (submitted by Director, DIA tothe DCI): Presidential Budget Decision—3 3 9C2 for Content Tagging; III! Program Guidancea€"1-"Y2006—2O 1 1; and Presidential Information Sharing Directive ED 13 3 55.

How do I Use NEETS?

MEETS provides a SOAP web service. You can submit documents to MEETS by running client software

Changing Threats in a Changing World: Staying Ahead of Terrorists, Spies, and Hackers 2 of 3Robert S. MTitle: Terrorists, Spies, and Hackers: The New National Security LandscapeDescription: Sumary

by FBI Director Robert S. Mueller in San Francisco on November 17, 2011. "Terrorists, spies, and hackers arealways thinking of new ways to harm us," Mueller said. Published: November 17, 2U1lPublisher: FBIPoint of Contact:EBI National Press Office, Washington, D.C.; telephone: [202] 324—369lSubject: counterterrorismcyber thieves inEastern Europe drain bank accounts in America. Spies steal industry secrets and sell them overseas. And alone intheir bedrooms, disaffected youths become radicalized by Internet propaganda and vow to wage jihad. It is difficultto remember a time when Americans did not have to worry about terrorists plotting violence on U.S. soil andcriminals reaching through the Internet to target individuals, businesses, and government, but that is howdrastically the world has changed since the 9/11 attacks."The horrific events of that day were the prelude to adecade of political, economic, and cultural transformation," said FBI Director Robert S. Mueller, "andglobalization and technology have accelerated these changes."The hyper—connectivity that helped spawn this newglobalization is empowering "both friend and foe alike," Mueller said this afternoon during a speech in SanFrancisco. "Today, our world can change in the blink of an eye. . If we in the FBI fail to recognize how the worldis changing, the consequences can be devastating."Note: The full text of Director Mueller’s speech contains moreinformation about the following cases:— Najibullah Zazi— Christmas Day airline bombing— Hosam Smadi— Russian spyring— Noshir Gowadia— Kexue Huang— CorefloodMueller noted that "terrorists, spies, and hackers are always thinkingof new ways to harm us." He provided examples of several recent cases (see sidebar} and outlined how the Bureauplans to stay ahead of these threats while remaining ever—mindful of protecting Americans’ civilliberties.Regarding terrorism, al Qaeda has been weakened since 9fl1, and dozens of attacks have been prevented. But "core al Qaeda operating out of Pakistan remains comitted to high—profile attacks against the West," Muellersaid—a fact confirmed by records seized from Usama Bin Laden’s compound after his death. In Yemen, al Qaeda in theArabian Peninsula has attempted several attacks on the U.S., Mueller added. And of particular concern are homegrownterrorists who may become self—radicalized online and are willing to act alone, which makes them difficult to findand to stop.In the area of espionage, "nations will always try to learn one another’s secrets to gain political, military, or economic advantage," Mueller said. And because "so much sensitive data is now stored on computernetworks," he added, "our adversaries often find it as effective, or even more effective, to steal secrets throughcyber intrusions."Statistics on Terrorismyear

XSLT (Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations)

a declarative language (expresses the logic of a computation without describing its control flow)

an XML‐based language used for the transformation of XML documents

The original XML document is not changed; rather, a new XML document is created based on the content of the existing one.

The new document may be in standard XML syntax, HTML or plain text.  XSLT is often used to convert data between different XML schemas or to convert XML data into web pages.

The most recent version is XSLT 2.0.

Produced by Eviware, a Swedish company, subsequently acquired by SmartBear of Massachusetts.

There are no books or printed documentation available for soapUI, only online documentation.

Much of the online English language documentation seems to have been written by multilingual Swedes in not their first language.

Approximately 20 percent (my estimate) of the online documentation advertises the paid pro version which has definite advantages, including generating input forms.

The general consensus of most of the METS co‐workers I talked to was that the documentation was not entirely satisfactory; the tutorials tended to lack cohesion and continuity.    Some tutorials are out of date (the web service in the examples may no longer exist).

There are some good freelance tutorials on the Web.

Functional testing helps you verify whether your Web Services work as they should.

Load testing makes it possible to study how your Web Service behaves under different load conditions.

Security testing ensures that your Web Services are protected from vulnerabilities.

Service simulation gives you the possibility to simulate systems not available.  This enables effective testing already from the start of our project.
