From the Desk of Monsignor Carruthers

Today’s celebration of the Solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord brings the liturgical season of Christmas to a close and gives us an opportunity to reflect on our baptismal calling. In last Sunday’s column, for the Solemnity of the Epiphany, we remembered that we are all called to participate in the mission of evangelization – to be missionaries, witnesses who “propose the perennial truth of the Gospel of Christ” in the midst of the world. We are called to be a people of joy who build up God’s kingdom of Justice, Peace, and Truth. Today’s feast reminds us that before witnessing to others, we must be authentic disciples of Jesus Christ.

To be a disciple means to be a pupil of another, in our case, of Jesus Christ. To be a disciple means to sit at the feet of the Master in openness and receptivity – to be formed by our encounter with Him in such a way that He becomes the “new horizon and decisive direction” of our lives (Benedict XVI). Being a disciple of Jesus and a witness to Him, a missionary in His name, are two realities that are intimately intertwined within our Baptismal identity as sons and daughters of God – the People of God, the Church. Pope Francis often refers to these two intertwined realities, challenging us to be “missionary disciples.”

At the annual Convocation of Priests of the Archdiocese of Miami, which took place early in the Fall semester, Archbishop Wenski reiterated to us the importance of the New Evangelization. In response to the Second Synod of the Archdiocese of Miami, Archbishop Wenski opened several new ministries at the Archdiocesan level, which included hiring someone to coordinate the New Evangelization efforts of the Church in South Florida. That person, Mr. Stephen Colella, was introduced to us and addressed us at the Convocation.

Mr. Colella’s presentation was very exciting. I personally found it very affirming, as much of what he presented is known to us here at St. Augustine and has been part of our conversation over the past four and a half years. Among many other points, he reminded us that, while we are all called to be intentional disciples, a person does not usually become one overnight – it is a journey. He shared with us five steps, or “thresholds” of that journey, as described by Sherry Weddell in her book “Forming Intentional Disciples.” If you are not sure about all this talk of “discipleship,” I invite you to pause and to consider where you are on that journey. Know that the Lord meets you there. If you are living as an intentional disciple, I invite you to pause and to consider the steps of others as you witness to Jesus Christ.

1. Initial trust: Someone makes a positive association with Jesus, the Church, or a Christian believer.

2. Spiritual curiosity: A person is intrigued by or desiring to know more about Jesus, his life, his teachings or some aspect of the Christian faith.

3. Spiritual openness: A person acknowledges to himself or herself and to God that he or she is open to the possibility of personal and spiritual change.

4. Spiritual seeking: The person moves from being essentially passive to actively seeking to know the God who is calling him or her.

5. Intentional discipleship: This is the decision to “drop one’s nets,” as Peter did, and follow deeply and with one’s whole life, follow the Lord. This threshold means to make a conscious commitment to follow Jesus in the midst of his Church as an obedient disciple and to reorder one’s life accordingly.

Where are you on the journey? Know that the Lord meets you where you are “at” and invites you, one step at a time, to grow in trust, curiosity, openness, desire, and encounter. We are called to be missionary disciples. To truly respond to that call requires a conscious decision. To get to the point to make such a decision is a journey of faith – and a wonderful adventure. Where ever you are on that journey, be open to what the Lord unfolds before you. With Pope Francis, let us pray to Mary for her intercession on behalf of our journey of following her Son: “We ask Mary that, as the first disciple, she teach us to remain watching, that she accompany us in patience, strengthen us in hope; we ask that she lead us towards the meeting with her Risen Son; that she free us from fear, so that we cans hear the announcement of the angel... to announce it to others who need it so much.”

2015 Archbishop’s Charity and Development Drive Begins

As we begin the year 2015, we have so much to reflect upon and for which to be grateful. We are called upon by God to be good stewards of the gifts He has given us by placing those gifts at His service. In the coming days, many of you will receive a letter from Archbishop Thomas G. Wenski regarding the 2015 Archbishop’s Charity and Development Drive (ABCD). Please read it and prayerfully consider supporting the Archdiocese of Miami and its many life-changing ministries. For more than fifty years, the Archdiocese of Miami has been building and sustaining the Catholic community in South Florida. That has been made possible because of people like you. Since its inception, the Archbishop’s Charities and Development Drive (ABCD) has always been a conduit to carrying out God’s Will. The good works that ABCD makes possible are a testimony to our faith, a faith that is very much alive and is a part of each and every one of us. Let us join together to be One in Faith, One in Hope, One in Charity. Thank you for your support of ABCD.
