A defibrillator is a machine that gives anelectric shock to re-start the heart after aheart attack. Speed is of the essence, so it’sgood to know where to find one. There aretwo types:

PUBLIC ACCESSDEFIBRILLATOR (PAD)Front of Folksworth Village Hall

opposite The Fox.STATIC DEFIBRILLATOR

In Stilton PavilionWHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

A PAD is on an outside wall in a lockedcabinet with an access code provided by a999 call operator.

A STATIC one is inside a building and isavailable only while the building is open.

Halls the Chemist are coordinating the planto install a PAD in Stilton. SCAN will keepyou informed.

HOW A PAD WORKSIf you make a 999 call reporting a patientwith symptoms such as chest pain orshortage of breath, you will be given thecode needed to get access to the machine. This allows you to buy time until a FirstResponder arrives with a defibrillator.

If you use a static machine you will receivevoice-guided instructions on how to use it.

On page 4 you can read the 2018 report ofthe Community First Responder.

Those Vital MinutesCOMMUNITY FIRST RESPONDER REPORT 2018

The start of 2018 saw the East of EnglandAmbulance Service’s fundraising appeal fora replacement Automated ExternalDefibrillator (AED) achieve such positivesupport from the community that we wereable to purchase not only the replacementAED but also an additional AED and anothercomplete First Responder kit.

The group gave 7,577 hours of voluntaryemergency 999 cover and attended 168 callswith 156 patients in the first vital minutesbefore the arrival of an ambulance crew.

More recently, we have had anothervolunteer join the team (who will now havecompleted their training and supervisioncalls) so as to offer even more emergency999 cover for our community.

Continued fundraising pays for replacementequipment, our additional 999 responder kit,call-out mobile phone, and a winter coat andfleece for our new team member. With thepossibility of the expense of upgrades for

999 callout equipment we are incrediblyappreciative of the management, staff andcustomers of the businesses where ourcollection boxes are displayed:

The Addison Arms in Glatton,The Bell Inn in Stilton,The Fox in Folksworth,The Fox & Hounds in Gt GiddingNisa Local Store in Stilton andThe Talbot in Stilton.

Even more thanks to The Fox and The Fox& Hounds for holding fundraising quiznights, along with The Talbot who also heldthe Stilton Bike Show (with The TriumphOwners Motor Cycle Club) and named usas their chosen charity for the year.

All fundraising income and thanks areposted on Twitter: @FolksworthCFRs

Funds are banked and held centrally, asrequired by The East of England AmbulanceService NHS Trust.

The day and night shelter for Peterborough’shomeless continues to grow from strengthto strength, writes Chris Walford. The nightshelter, for up to eight guests per night, hasnow been extended from 12 to 18 weeks, thanks to six new churches taking part. There are now 13 churches involved, withover 150 volunteers. Thevenues provide warmth, food, a bed, fellowship andlove for guests. StiltonChurch and its volunteersagain play a big part.

Last March, the Light Project PeterboroughTrust learnt a lesson from the 'Beast fromthe East' when it had to quickly set upemergency daytime shelter provision inorder to save lives. As a result, this year theTrust has leased the Garden House in theCathedral Precincts. This is providingwarmth, hope and targeted support foraround 30 homeless visitors per day.

The centre is run by Trust staff and 18volunteers. The Garden House provides GPmedical support, hairdressing, chiropodyservices, CV writing support, benefit advice, and the City Councilhousing officers are basedthere. Other services canbe arranged. There is evena gardening club, which issorting out the acre ofovergrown garden! Aboveall, guests who arrive aregiven warmth andsomething to eat and

drink, and they are shown that they arevalued as human beings and that there ishope in their future. The Trust is undertakingnegotiations about a long-term lease of theGarden House as there seems little prospectthat homeless numbers will reduce in thenear future.

Establishing the GardenHouse was an act of faith, since annual costs areestimated to triple. So thankyou, Stilton Churches, forthe almost £3000 raised in

collections over Christmas. And thank youto all who are volunteering to support thisproject to the benefit, welfare and good ofsome of the most needy amongst us.

Donations can be sent to Jan Armitage, 37Old North Road, Wansford, Peterborough.PE8 6CB. Cheques made payable to LightProject Peterborough.

The Mairie at St Christol les Alès haspresented the Twinning Association with adecorative barrel to commemorate 20 yearsof twinning between Stilton and St Christol, writes Chris Walford.

The barrel features an etched metal panelon the side, depicting our two countries andthe top has three painted scenes from StChristol, the Chateaux at Montmoirac, theSt Christol wine cave and the ancientpyramid monument. The paintings weredone by Valerie Benezet, the Mayor’s wife.

This is a remarkable piece of furniture andwill become, in time, another of Stilton’streasured historical artefacts. The Bell Innhas kindly offered to give the barrel a home.It is placed at the end of the bar for all tosee and admire.

It’s hard to imagine a more appropriatesymbol of our Twinning Association, ehChris?

FOLKSWORTH SCHOOL -GROWING IN TECHNOLOGY

The Folksworth School PTA did a fantasticjob last year and, amongst otherinvestments, raised enough money for theschool to purchase 15 iPads for our children. These resources have been available sincethe beginning of term, and they are alreadymaking a terrific difference to the wayclasses approach their work and record theirachievements. Our thanks go to the PTAteam who made this possible, and toeveryone who contributed to a PTA eventduring last year.

This technology is particularly relevant thismonth as we have Safer Internet Day at thebeginning of February. The internet is sucha rich and fantastic resource for learners, but we need to ensure it is also a safe placefor children to explore and engage. This isso important to our school, that we havecreated a number of 'Digital Leaders' -children who are being trained up to becomeonline safety champions for their peers.

The theme of Safer Internet Day this yearis 'Together for a Better Internet' - and hereat Folksworth we are certainlydemonstrating that.

Around the ParishFOLKSWORTH & WASHINGLEY PARISH COUNCIL REPORT

RESOLVING HGV PROBLEMSAs mentioned in last month's issue, our bidis with Highways for evaluation. I have notreceived any feedback/comments fromresidents, so assume all are happy with whatcould be happening (assuming our bid issuccessful).

To reiterate, the proposals are: 4 x Gates at the entrances Changing the junction priority and

making vehicles give way fromWashingley Road onto Manor Road.

Remove existing markings andinstall new markings within thejunction area

Install 2 x Map type advancedirection signs for the junction

Install 1 x Give Way sign(illuminated)

Install 1 x Flag type direction sign

Entrances: Dragons Teeth Install 2 x Informatory sign - Not

suitable for HGVs

Other: SLOW markings

Councillors accepted these proposals as apotential solution to the problems. Thehistory and results from the traffic surveycommissioned by the parish council earlierthis year were presented to the panel onDecember 13th. We are waiting to hearwhether the scheme has won the fundingfrom the County.

The Parish Council has agreed to contribute£5000 to the cost. If successful, the schemewould commence in April and is expectedto take up to 10 months to complete.

Obviously, even if the presentation to panelis successful and the funds are offered,Council does not have to accept theproposals. If any residents have anyconcerns about any of the above, please getin touch with me. If the bid is successful,we will ask for large-scale drawings of theplans so that these can be displayed/viewedin the village hall.COMMUNITY FACEBOOK PAGE

Stilton in TuneLAUNCHING AN AMAZING PROGRAMME FOR 2019 !

I hope that you all had a great time over thefestive period, writes Tony Oliver. Ofcourse, by the time you read this it will belong forgotten, but perhaps not financially!

My wife and I had a good time with thefamily but slightly tempered by the newsthat the hire charges for the Stilton Pavilionhave been more than doubled! Whilst beingunderstandable to a certain level it has puta lot of pressure on me regarding the futureof our charity events and how to keep themviable. I have been very pleased to makecharitable donations to the Pavilion totallingsome £840 over the past 21 months, overand above the hire fee.

So to carry on providing top qualitymulti-keyboard entertainment I have noalternative than to raise our admissioncharge to £10 as from our March concert. Ihope this will not deter you from coming asit is still really quite cheap for the qualityof live music provided. It is hoped that thecontinuing growth of our audience will bemaintained so that the charity concerts willbe able to continue beyond this year.

Remember that this year’s concerts willfeature some of the best musicians fromhome and abroad. Our February and Marchevents both feature some of the youngertalent in the business; Ian House and, onSunday 3rd March, the magic fingers of MarkThompson from Durham will entertain us.Make sure you are at the Pavilion, detailsbelow, to hear some great music and enjoyan afternoon with like-minded people.

Dates and artistes are as follows:

3rd February - Ian House3rd March - Mark Thompson7th April - Rod Pooley5th May - Claudia Hirschfeld **2nd June - David Thomas7th July - Ian Griffin4th August - Kevin Grunill1st September - Chris Powell6th October - DirkJan Ranzijn3rd November - Tony Stace and Andrew Nix in duet15th December - David Harrild

** Please note that the Claudia Hirschfeldconcert will be slightly more expensive thanthe regular cost because of her star status inthe world of music.

Concerts start at 2:30pm (doors open 2pm)and, with an interval for free refreshmentsand raffle, finish around 5pm. Do come andjoin our music-loving group; you will bewelcomed by our friendly team of helpers.Oh, the cost? Now £10 per person and stillvery good value! We look forward to seeingyou at The Pavilion.

From The Cabbage PatchGardening in February

GET OUT THERE AND GET ON WITH IT !

It goes without saying that it all depends onthe weather, but if possible get out and getstarted. By the end of the month the earlyflowering shrubs such as forsythia, flowering currant and weigela will havefinished flowering and can be pruned. Theyusually flower on last year's growth. Cut outany damaged or dead shoots to ground level. If the bush is congested, open it up by takingout stems to ground level. Any weak or thinshoots should also be cut out.

After pruning mulch and feed.

Cornus and salix, grown for winter colour, can also be cut down to their base.Winter-flowering jasmine should have theprevious year's growth cut back to 5cm fromthe old wood. Snowdrops 'in the green' canbe lifted and divided. Keep dead-headingthe winter pansies so they continue to floweras the weather warms up.

And don't forget the birds still need feeding!By attracting them into the garden they willeat the pests.

The A14 project has revealed theastonishing richness of Cambridgeshire’sarchaeology. Two years of excavations, covering some 350 hectares, have unearthed:

● Three Neolithic henges, between 4000and 5000 years old, and seven prehistoricburial grounds, most from the Bronze Age.

● 15 Iron Age and Roman settlements, threeAnglo-Saxon settlements and onedeserted medieval village.

● Around 8,000 objects such as coins, brooches and ironwork, 375 human

burials and cremations, more than sixtonnes of pottery and almost five tonnesof animal bone.

These are helping archaeologists tounderstand how people lived, how theirsocieties worked, their spiritual lives andthe impact of major events such as the startand ultimate collapse of Roman rule.

A 30-strong expert team is now embarkingon several years of work to tell the story ofthousands of years of human occupation. One exciting story is the discovery of theearliest beer in Britain on an Iron Age site.

The ubiquitous household internet routerhas become a popular target for scammers.SCAN has been receiving these scamtelephone calls every day recently.

In a typical version of the scam, someonecalls you ostensibly from the technicalsupport team of internet service providers,BT, Sky or TalkTalk. The caller - whichmay just be an automated recording - advisesyou that there’s a problem with your router, for example that it’s been ‘compromised inforeign countries’ or that it just isn’t workingproperly. Either way, they claim it has to bechanged. In the automated version, therecording may ask you to press a particularbutton on your phone. DON'T!

To create a sense of urgency, they may claimthat your internet will have to be shut downwithin 24 hours unless you take action.

The scammers ultimate aim is to trick youinto making a payment, giving them yourbank details, or gaining access to your onlinebank account.

HOW NOT TO BE A VICTIM● Treat ALL unsolicited phone calls with

caution. If you have any doubt, just hangup and call your internet providerdirectly. Ensure you only get the numberfrom their official website or theiraccount statements and DON’T call anynumber given by the fraudsters.

● If they say there’s a problem with yourrouter, go check for yourself. If you don’thave any internet problems, hang up.

● DON’T EVER give someone access toyour computer. You wouldn’t let justanyone into your home, would you?

● DON'T give your bank details over thephone. Your internet provider wouldhave these details already, so there’s noreason why they would want them again.

● Warn others, especially the morevulnerable.

● If you use social media DON'T revealtoo much personal information; that'soften where scammers get theirinformation from.

Note that you can use the BT Call Protect(1572) function to block undesirable callers, but this won’t be 100% effective in theseinstances, as the scammers routinely ‘spoof’innocent-looking numbers and change themfrequently. There is no substitute for ahealthy suspicious nature!

Keeping WellNews from the Wellside Clinic(01487) 830340 www.wellside.org.uk

Missed GPAppointments

You may have seen in the news recently anarticle discussing how much missed GPappointments are costing the NHS.(BBC News 02.01.19www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-46732626).Officials have stated that missedappointments are costing £216 millionwhich equates to 15 million appointmentsper year. Of those 15 million appointmentswhich patients missed last year, 1150 ofthem were here at Wellside Surgery. That'sover 249 hours of clinical time which waswasted when we could have been seeingother patients in need of an appointment.Missed appointments waste time andmoney, and ultimately have an impact onpatient waiting times. If you have bookedan appointment which, for whatever reason, you will no longer be attending then pleasecontact us to let us know so that we canoffer that consultation to another patient.

Practice PremisesTaking into account recent and likely futureexpansion of the village, we are currentlyexploring the possibility of extending thesurgery to provide additional patientconsulting rooms. This will be the subjectof our forthcoming patient survey and wewould encourage as many patients aspossible to complete the survey for us.

The survey will automatically be sent outto patients who have signed up to be partof our Patient Reference Group or toautomatically receive our newsletterselectronically. (If you have not done soalready, details of how to join both of thesegroups are on our website.) The survey willalso be available via our website and hardcopies will be located in the waiting room.
