Steps for making or doing activity:

Use images with short captions

How will the children benefit from the activity?

The Children will be able to pick a figurine or a small object of interest to them.

The Children were able to use various materials to decorate the snow globe.

Age group/s: (development level)

2 years and over

How would you make the activity more inclusive? Principles of universal design

Principle 2 Flexibility in Use

The design accommodates a wide range of individual preferences and abilities.

•5 Provide choice in methods of use.

How would you adapt the activity to suit outside/inside?

You could carry out the activity outdoors and if it was Christmas time Children could

decorate holly and put it on the outside of the jar.

Simplify this activity:

By not sticking snow drops on the outside of the jar as the glitter already gives the snow

globe the snowing effect.

Variations for the activity: How could you vary the activity? ‘Marbling using foam or egg

whites instead’

Instead of using snowdrops for decorating the jar we could have decorated snowflakes.

Stencils of a themed holiday such as Christmas (a snow man) or Easter (a chick).

Page 3: Snow Globes

Instead of using food colouring and glitter you could use glitter coloured paint and drop

that into water.

Aim 3.2 Aims: 1.6, 2.3

This links to Montessori’s principle of choice where Children are provided with choice as

to what they want to put into their snow globes and how they want to decorate them.

Safety concerns?

The glow sticks may be toxic so a discussion about careful handling would be necessary.

Could the activity link to an external activity/group/ outing?’

It could be linked to a visit to see Santa they could bring their snowglobes.

Extensions for the activity: Could science, geography, history, culture, literacy, maths etc,

be incorporated into to the activity? How? What changes would you make?

You could incorporate numeracy into the activity, Children could use specific

measurements of water for their jars so by asking them to fill the jar to a certain number

you can introduce literacy skills.

Interactions with children:

Look at how the glitter is sparkly and is falling slowly to the ground, isn’t that the same as

snow.

Look at the different snow drops on the jar some are big and some are small.

Problem solving element?

You could say why all of the water turns red when you put in some of the food colouring.

You could ask questions like why will we put glitter into the snow globe?

Evaluation of activity: What did think of the activity?

I really enjoyed the activity I liked using all of the different materials and that the group

used different materials to me so the snow globes came out different.

Summary of your personal learning in points (at least 4) from doing the activity;

. I learned that a small amount of food colouring means that the mixture is lighter.

.I learned that the glow stick liquid is very hard to get out of the plastic.

.I learned that my first task should have been to glue the objects onto the lids as

they took a while to stick.

.I learned that the figurines should be small and light because the heavier the

object was the harder it was to stick to the lid.
