A MESSAGE FROM DR. DAVID KESELMAN, CEO

It seems that (at least hoping) winter is behind us, and the weather is only getting better and better and we are seeing longer and brighter days. I hope you had an opportunity to join in the celebrations for Purim that were organized by the staff of Louis Brier. The festival of Purim commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia from Haman’s plot “to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day.”

The Persian Empire of the 4th century BCE extended over 127 lands, and all the Jews were its subjects. When King Ahasuerus had his wife, Queen Vashti, executed for failing to follow his orders, he arranged a beauty pageant to find a new queen. A Jewish girl, Esther, found favor in his eyes and became the new queen, though she refused to divulge her nationality. It is because of her that Haman’s plot failed and Jews throughout the Persian kingdom were saved.

On the heels of Purim is Passover, unfortunately, as we are all acutely aware of the unfortunate circumstances with regards to COVID-19, some of our plans to celebrate Passover may be affected. With the recent instructions from the Ministry of Health with regards to a range of restrictions much of what we can and can not do is determined by what is allowed or not. We ask that you help us keep our residents and staff safe and healthy and obey our directions at all times.

Please be sure to visit out website for any new updates, if you have questions feel free to contact us through our info line at [email protected]. We will endeavour to respond to all inquiries and acknowledge your questions within 24 hours. Please bear with us as we are trying to manage our efforts and resources as best as we can.

With this note, I would like to wish you all a safe and healthy time ahead, thank you for your continued support and commitment to help us deliver the best care possible.

Thanks,Dr. David Keselman, CEO

Passover

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT PASSOVER AT THE LBHH/WR

With the implications of the COVID-19 virus and all that it brings, we have CANCELLED the Louis Brier and Weinberg Seders.

This includes cancelling guest meals for families to dine with residents at Yontef meals during the holiday. Synagogue services have also been cancelled indefinitely.

We know that this news will be disappointing to many, however, the residents living here depend on all of us to minimize the risk and spread of illness and infection.

In a Jewish calendar packed with ritual observances and religious feasts, the Passover Seder is the quintessential shared holiday experience. It is perhaps the most widely observed Jewish holiday ritual and the story of the journey from slavery to freedom, along with the songs, customs and food, have become a core part of Jewish tradition.

But all of that has been upended by COVID-19 and the restrictions necessary to contain its spread. While we won’t have Seders at the LB/WR and with synagogue services cancelled indefinitely, there may be some who are worried about how we are going to support residents’ spiritual and cultural fulfillment. The recreation team will create opportunities for residents to engage in activities that support their spiritual and cultural fulfillment during Passover that are compliant with the necessary protocols and restrictions.

This year, the 8 day festival of Passover begins on April 8 and ends on April 16 at nightfall.Passover commemorates the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt and is observed by avoiding leavened food, and retelling the story of the Exodus at the Seder meals

Passover, or Pesach (pay-sahk) is one of the most significant observances on the Jewish calendar, and individuals of the Jewish faith worldwide celebrate with family at traditional Seders. The Seder (say’-dehr) is an ancient ceremony which retells the story of the birth of the Jewish Nation on the eve of their exodus from Egypt through rituals, the reading and re-telling of the story in the Haggadah, songs and symbolic foods.

Seders are held in Jewish homes on each of the first two nights of Pesach and are a celebration not just of re-telling specific historical events, but the story of freedom itself. It is also a reminder of spring renewal, and the perpetual renewal of life. At the Seder, the story of Moses leading the Jewish people out of slavery in Egypt is read in the Haggadah, with much singing and discussion involving everyone at the table. The first two and last two days of the holiday are holy days, observed with all the same rules as Shabbat.

Matzah: At the time of the Exodus, the Jews left Egypt with haste, and therefore had little time to allow yeast to rise in order to make bread. Instead, during the entire eight days, matzah, a thin dry type of cracker made from only flour and water is eaten. All the ‘chometz’ (leavened bread products) will be stored separately and the kitchens will be using an entirely different (Kosher for Pesach) set of plates, pots, and pans and cooking items. During the entire festival, no chometz bread or bread products, crackers, cake, etc. are to be consumed in the communal areas of the home. In Jewish homes, the holiday takes a great deal of preparation and intensive cleaning!

While COVID-19 has upended Passover planning and traditional methods of observance with the restrictions necessary to contain its spread, Passover in many Jewish homes throughout the world, will look a little different this year.

While we won’t have Seders at the LB/WR this year, and with synagogue services cancelled indefinitely, we will create opportunities for residents to engage in activities that support their spiritual and cultural fulfillment during Passover that are compliant with the necessary protocols and restrictions. Wishing you and your loved one a joyous Passover.

Chag Sameach (Happy Holidays)

7. We have tightened our Pandemic Plan and continue to work on the details as we obtain knowledge from others who have successfully conquered the epidemic.

8. We continue to hurdle the challenges that the global shortage of PPEs bring to our operations. Our local supplier can no longer meet the requirements for procedure masks, gloves, eye protection, and isolation gowns. We continuously reach out to the Ministry of Health and other organizations for support, which we sometimes receive, however, still not enough to sustain us, should this pandemic continues to linger.

9. We have also been experiencing shortage in our cleaning (bleach and disinfectant wipes) and hand hygiene supplies (alcohol based hand sanitizers and hand soap).

IPAC HIGHLIGHTS continued...

As of March 17, 2020, all Vancouver Coastal Health Long-Term Care Homes and Assisted Living are restricting visitor access to only

PHYSICIAN NEIGHBORHOOD MODEL UPDATE

In honor of Volunteer Week, I’m pleased to begin introducing our amazing volunteer team at Louis Brier – and I’m starting off with Trudi! You may have seen this lovely girl around Louis Brier already.

She is a 4 year old Bernedoodle (Bernese Mountain Dog/Standard Poodle cross). She was one of a litter of seven and several of the puppies were taken in by a breeder on Vancouver Island to be service dogs – so she is from good dog therapy stock! Trudi’s human is Cheryl whom you also may have seen around. Trudi loves people and being busy so coming to Louis Brier to visit residents is the perfect activity for us. When she’s not volunteering, Trudi likes to sleep and eat, and also run in the woods at UBC when she can get a ride there.

Long work hours are common for many of us. In fact, the amount of time you spend interacting with your colleagues is often greater than the time you spend with your family and friends. Therefore, the quality of your work relationships can positively or negatively affect your job satisfaction as well as your overall well-being. Developing positive work relationships can contribute to an empowering, motivating, and fun work environment, and can improve the ways that others treat you in return. On the other hand, negative work relationships can increase stress and job dissatisfaction.

Here are a few approaches to consider in building more positive relationships at work:

Demonstrate Respect

If you ask people what they most want at work, they will likely express a desire to be treated with dignity and respect. Here are a few ways to demonstrate respect to others:

• Treat people with courtesy, kindness and consideration.

• Understand and accept personal and cultural differences. Treat people the same regardless of their race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, size, age, or country of origin.

• Encourage people to express opinions and ideas. Listen to what they have to say before expressing your own viewpoint. Never interrupt or cut off another person.

• Never insult, blame, or put down people or their ideas, even if you are angry or hurt.

Seek to Understand Differences

Another key to forming effective working relationships is to deal with differences directly. Differences in values and opinions between people can be challenging, but adopting an approach of “curiosity” when confronting differences can lead to discovering new ideas or perspectives. In

addition, attempting to understand people is a good process for enhancing relationships, and is ultimately more rewarding than withdrawing, fighting, or building resentment.

Respond with Compassion

Compassion inspires one to be kind and sympathetic toward others. Compassionate interpersonal interactions in the workplace may include providing emotional support, listening, and showing empathy to a co-worker. Developing the ability to respond with compassion to people at work requires a different way of thinking. It involves a commitment to suspending judgment while taking the time to truly understand another’s behavior. Understanding the needs, values, and beliefs that influence an individual’s behavior can help you develop empathy for their position or situation, and change your attitude towards them. Positive emotions generated by compassion have a strong influence on reducing job stress, increasing job satisfaction, and contributing to a feeling of well-being.

Resolve Conflict

Conflict in the workplace is inevitable. How you handle conflict is a fair indication of your ability to cope with your own stress, and the stressful reactions of others. To diffuse anger and help manage conflict situations, follow these guidelines:

Don’t take things personally. Recognize that the individual is angry at the situation, not you personally.

Let the person vent their anger by allowing them to speak

without interruption.

Use active listening skills. Your interest will show people that you are genuinely concerned and want to help them.

• Maintain eye contact • Ask questions • Reflect back to people what you heard them say.

Accept responsibility. Do not pass blame off to someone else.

Do what you can to solve the problem right away. When a negative situation arises, do not let it fester. Develop a plan of action to address the problem with the individual, and then work together toward resolving it.

Long work hours are common for many of us. In fact, the amount of time you spend interacting with your colleagues is often greater than the time you spend with your family and friends. Therefore, the quality of your work relationships can positively or negatively affect your job satisfaction as well as your overall well-being. Developing positive work relationships can contribute to an empowering, motivating, and fun work environment, and can improve the ways that others treat you in return. On the other hand, negative work relationships can increase stress and job dissatisfaction.

Here are a few approaches to consider in building more positive relationships at work:

Sick Time usage has been steadily increasing each month which is also increasing our Over Time costs. This is driving a significant Deficit for this fiscal year, which we all need to be concerned about. We continue to work with Human Resources and all employees to manage our sick time and OT.

FROM THE BUSINESS OFFICE

Myla Pelayo, our Companion Program Coordinator made a presentation about the Companion Program. The presentation was held at Vancouver Coastal Health Building on February 18, 2020. The audience was comprised of various health organizations throughout the Lower Mainland, like Fraser Health, VCH, and Providence. The presentation was well-received and most of the audience were “amazed” about our unique program. Currently, LBHH/WR is the only facility in British Columbia that has an in-house companion program. Some of the health organizations’ representatives said they became interested in the program and are considering creating a similar program like ours for their organization.

Staff Schedule Care Rev5 Update ***POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE***Good News - our scheduling software “SSC” will be upgraded to “Rev5” – Date TBD!What does this mean for you?• You will be able to access SSC on other internet browsers like Chrome and Safari, not just Microsoft Outlook. • No system time outs! You can be logged in indefinitely without being ‘logged off’!• With the upgraded software comes an Enhanced Mobile App which now allows employees to do shift

exchanges and time off requests within the App.You will not be able to access SSC during the day of the upgrade. Please plan ahead. A member of the Staffing Team will be dedicated to training and offering support to employees in the Upstairs Staff Lounge. Please go to the lounge for assistance with SSC Rev5 as opposed to the Staffing Office during this time. We will be releasing more information to all staff prior to the upgrade and hope to provide a number of informative and helpful videos related to how to navigate and use the upgraded software.

Mini SurveysIn an effort to increase feedback from our employees, we will be launching “Mini Surveys” periodically each month. The surveys responses will be requested through ten new red Feedback Boxes (similar to the blue Suggestion for Improvement Boxes). Some of the feedback we received through the Employee Satisfaction Surveys was that we could improve upon acting on staff feedback. We will be using the “Mini Surveys” to request more detailed information to better inform decision making. Here is the revised process:

“New Hire” SurveyConsistent with the Strategic Direction to be an Employer of Choice, the Human Resources Department is seeking feedback about the new employee recruitment and onboarding/orientation experience at LBHH&WR. We will be surveying employees who have been hired within the past two years. If you’ve been hired in the last two years please look out for an invite link and participate in the survey. This feedback will be valuable in helping us to continue to improve in this area!

Vending MachinesDid you notice that we replaced the vending machine in the upstairs staff lounge with a newer, better machine that accepts more than just coins?!!! We also adding two additional machines in the lobby (one for kosher snacks and the other for drinks). This was added to LBHH&WR in order to give everyone onsite more options for food and beverages.

Monthly Birthday Celebrations Our organization-wide monthly Birthday Celebrations in the Upstairs Staff Lounge have been very successful. Unfortunately, our Potluck style gatherings must be put on hold until further notice. Stay tuned for updates.

Working with HREvery second Friday of each month Loren (Director, Human Resources), and/or members of his HR team, will pack up their workstation and spend one half-day (morning or afternoon) working in a randomly selected unit/department. Not only will this make HR more approachable it will provide them with a better understanding of the day-to-day operations and the challenges front-line staff members face. To date HR had the pleasure of “working with” many employees! Who will be “Working with HR” in April? Find out on April 10th!

Coffee with HRIn support of our goal to become an Employer of Choice, the Human Resources Department would like to invite you to join members of their team for Coffee in the upstairs staff lounge every month. The last few of events have been a success!!! We have decided to try a new time: 3:00 to 4:30. The next gathering will take place on April 28 from 3:00 to 4:30.These casual events are intended to share information, answer questions, get feedback, and to make HR personnel more accessible. I hope you can join us. I’m looking forward to getting to know you more.

Do you have any questions, comments, suggestions or concerns regarding the HR content above? If so, please email [email protected] and tell us what you think.

Please join me in congratulating Linda Ling on her Retirement!!!Linda started at LBHH&WR on December 10, 1993 – that’s over 26 Years supporting

LBHH&WR and our Residents through Staffing and Scheduling! We’ve done some rough math and are confident that she’s made well over 1,000,000 phone calls out to staff

to keep our operations going and our Residents cared for.

February 27th was Linda’s last day at LBHH&WR and we are sad to see her go. Linda, Thank You x 1,000,000!!!

WI-FI UPGRADE PROJECT UPDATE

As many of you are aware, the current IT infrastructure at Louis Brier Home and Hospital and the Weinberg Residence has reached the end of its useful life. Over the last few months our IT team has received an increasing number of service requests as a result of users experiencing difficulties logging on to the Snider Guest Wi-Fi or having found the network speed to be very slow and unreliable. When the Snider Guest was first created several years ago; its purpose was to provide a short term Wi-Fi connection for guests visiting the facility; as such the original infrastructure never had the capacity to meet the current demand. What our residents and families require today has changed and we as an organization are committed to providing a more reliable and cost effective Wi-Fi network. To achieve this, a significant investment has been made to replace the entire Wi-Fi infrastructure with a cloud based high speed internet service. What this means for you?The rollout of this upgrade has already begun and will continue over the next few months after the facilities preventative measures to address risks surrounding Influenza and COVID-19 are lifted. We are working very closely with our IT service provider to minimize any disruption and will continue to work with them to ensure a successful rollout.

CURRENT STATE vs FUTURE STATECURRENT• Snider Guest is available for all users with very limited capacity and does not meet the current demand.

Regular password changes are required to remove users to prevent the system overloading and failing. THE FUTURE STATE• Resident Wi-Fi setup – Each residents room will have a unique password providing them with access

to the Wi-Fi network. This access will belong to the resident with no time limits of usage and be faster and significantly more reliable than the current state. There will be a monthly fee associated with this connection with details to be provided at a later date. Feedback from residents and families is that a reliable network allowing for video calls would help families stay connected with our residents improving their quality of life. This new faster network will ensure reliable access for all subscribers.

• Snider Guest will be available for all users free of charge for a time limit of 90 minutes; after which guests would need to sign in again. This will allow visitors to sign in and have free Wi-Fi while on site.

It is a difficult time right now, working to follow the Ministry of Health guidelines for keeping residents safe and healthy and yet at the same time wanting to minimize anxiety by cultivating a regular routine for everyone.

The Rehab department is continuing to operate but in a reduced capacity. We have cancelled our group Keep Fit classes where hand weights are used, balloons passed around and balls thrown. We have opened the gym again but are only allowing 2 residents in at a time. Residents wash their hands as they enter and leave the gym. They ride the bike and can chat with each other and the Rehab Assistants as they ride. We carefully clean the bikes and bring 2 more residents to enjoy the exercise and socialization. We are walking with residents and encourage some gentle exercises in standing and sitting, all as 1:1 activities so that gathering is eliminated but good socialization is occurring.

We are continuing to do transfer and safety assessments when needed, to repair wheelchairs, make seating adjustments and put in falls equipment as needed. We make sure that the correct mattress and cushions are provided for wound management; that positioning devices are available. The restorative dining program on the 2nd floor is ongoing. We can continue to order adaptive clothing, hip protectors and non slip socks to keep residents comfortable and safe. If you have any questions, please phone Laurie Moore, Leader of Rehab Services at 604.267.4701 or send me an email to [email protected].
