DOE SNF and HLW Inventory

RW planning to accept 7,000 MTHM as part of the allocation for Yucca Mountain– 2333 MTHM is DOE SNF

• Naval reactors• INL/ICP• Savannah River Site• Hanford

– 4667 MTHM is DOE HLW• Savannah River Site• Hanford• ICP• West Valley Demonstration Project (conditional)

Draft License Application Inventory

Repository design and operations, and preclosure and postclosure analyses support receipt and emplacement– DOE SNF and HLW to be received in several configurations

• Standard canisters• Naval SFCs• Commercial-origin SNF• Canistered HLW glass• Vitrified plutonium glass waste form

– Analyses are based on 34 different SNF groups– Borosilicate HLW glass with increased waste loadings– Co-emplacement strategies within drifts– Co-disposal within waste packages

Acceptance Planning

Memorandum of Agreement between EM and RW sets responsibilities and conditions for acceptance, transportation, and disposal of DOE SNF and HLW– Current version is Revision 1– Draft Revision 2 is currently awaiting signature by EM– A similar agreement addresses acceptance of naval SNF by RW

Most significant changes to MOA include– MOA revised to cover only EM SNF and HLW– Complete rewrite of quality assurance responsibilities– Documents RW responsibility to acquire all transportation casks– Clarifies overall acceptance process

Key Documents between Offices

Waste Acceptance System Requirements Document– Revision 4 is current version– Draft revision 5 has been on hold for several years– Plan to reevaluate WASRD requirements after MOA is signed

Integrated Acceptance Schedule– LA design is loosely based on IAS Revision 0– A revision consistent with accelerated cleanup is planned

Integrated Interface Control Document– Revision 2 of IICD is under preparation– RW has received input and comments from EM and NNPP

Quality Assurance Requirements Document– An EM-specific QA program document, the Waste Custodian Quality

Assurance Requirements (WCQARs), is under development
