PAPER LABORATORY FOR OPTIMIZING

CHEMICAL PROGRAMSSNF

The Customer Applications Group of SNF offers the services of its Paper Laboratory in Riceboro, GA to help papermakers improve on their current chemical programs. The desire to increase machine speeds and strength targets, while reducing basis weights and water consumption, has created a need to develop sophisticated, specific chemical solutions. Retention and drainage, strength, and sizing solutions must be improved to meet the demands of the of the modern day papermaker. The SNF Paper Lab has the capability of testing, analyzing, and optimizing the chemical needs in all aspects of the papermaking process.

The instrumentation in the SNF Paper Lab includes standard wet end testing equipment for drainage, retention, and charge measurements. The paper mill needs only to provide our lab with samples from the refiner and white water for testing to begin. Our lab also has a Dynamic Handsheet Former, press, and dryer to make handsheets using stock from any paper mill. These handsheets can then be tested in our TAPPI room or sent back to the paper mill for a blind study.

DYNAMIC HANDSHEET FORMER (DHF)The Dynamic Handsheet Former allows the papermaker to test new chemical programs without taking risks on the paper machine by simulating chemical/filler addition and their impacts on mechanical and optical properties of the sheet. The DHF can make handsheets at basis weights between 12 - 55 lb. which allows us to create paper samples simulating the range from tissues and towels to packaging products.

In a single day of testing, the SNF Paper Lab can make between 20 and 25 handsheets. This large number of samples allows us to test a variety of chemical packages, ensuring that we pick the best product combinations for each mill. Each handsheet sample created is approximately 10” x 30”, which allows for multiple strength or sizing tests to be conducted on each sheet.

The SNF Paper Lab has wet end testing capabilities for determining drainage, retention, and charge. We can monitor fiber charge (Zeta Potential) and dissolved charge at different stages of chemical addition to optimize dosages in the laboratory before running it on the machine. Additional testing capabilities include freeness, first-pass retention, first-pass ash retention, and a dynamic drainage analyzer (under vacuum). This testing can take place in conjunction with handsheets to adjust strength results and ensure there are no issues with paper machine speed and retention, or separately to find a program that will allow for an increase in the speed of the paper machine alone.

TAPPI ROOM & DRY END TESTINGThe SNF Paper Lab also has a dry end lab set to the standards in TAPPI T 402. Handsheets created with the Dynamic Handsheet Former are conditioned in this lab before performance tests are conducted. This lab contains strength testing equipment that includes burst, tensile, short span compression, and standard compression testing. These tests allow us to perform strength testing that is routinely carried out in most paper mills. Additional to strength testing, size testing is done in this lab using either a Hercules or a Cobb Tester.

ANALYTICAL TEST CAPABILITIESTesting in the Analytical Services group can include measurements using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Inductively Coupled Plasma spectroscopy (ICP), gas chromatography (GC), automatic titrations for alkalinity, pH and conductivity, particle size analysis, rheological analysis, and microscopy.

As part of the SNF Customer Applications Laboratories, the SNF Paper Lab works closely with our Analytical Services group to help service and support our customers and our sales efforts. The Analytical Services group can assist with microbiological, fluid, and deposit analyses. This group can also be utilized for sizing work by performing particle size analyses on AKD and ASA emulsions.
