Norwalk Sealsduring the winter, the most common question i am asked in the club house is, did you see any seals today? if i was out on a low tide the answer is almost always yes.
harbor Seals have become abundant around the Norwalk islands during the winter, starting in the late nineteen eighties, they moved into our area more and more each year, i have seen as many as sixty at one time in the great reef area off of Sheffield island, but the normal count would be a dozen or so scattered about.
Some of their other favorite hang outs in Norwalk are yellow rocks off of Sheffield island, and Copps rocks, they will also spread out to just about any quiet area.
a few quick facts about harbor seals, they can grow up to six feet long, with three hundred pounds being the high side of their weight, each seal will consume about 5% of there body weight in food per day. (lobsters are not on their diet) They are very deep divers, 600 foot depths are a walk in the park for them, although their average dive is less than seventy feet and last 2-3 minutes. females can live up to 35 years, and males up to 25 years.
The other seal species that is being seen more and more often in the sound is the gray Seal, these seals which were a rarity in the sound only a handful of years ago, have become winter regulars in our local islands.
gray seals are giants compared to harbor seals, the male bull can push ten feet in length and weigh over eight hundred pounds, i’ve seen them, swimming next to my boat, take it from me, they’re Big!
By early March, the female harbor seals are plump, resembling the shape of a large balloon with their ten month gestation period nearing its end, they will soon leave the islands and make their way east, back to their pupping areas in Cape Cod, Maine and beyond to bear their young.
When april approaches seals become hard to find, as are the winter duck populations.
The many thousands of birds that called the Norwalk islands home for this winter are now following that timeless migration path, back through Canada and further north, to make life repeat itself.
The islands are never barren of wildlife, for as the seals and waterfowl have departed north, many other species are now replacing them.
returning are the osprey, oystercatchers, egrets, herons, Cormorants, Terns, Plover, Bluefish, Stripers and many others species to fill out their niche in the Norwalk islands.
The winter world of nature is almost over for now, but a whole new ball game is about to begin.
The photo of the single seal was taken in late february, it is a female harbor Seal, her roundness indicates that she is not far away from giving birth.
The other photo was from March, with two seals sunning themselves on a local rock, as another seal looks for a place to haul out and rest for a few hours.
