Capturing the power of your generosity
1
Hello –
My name is Sam, and I am an SCC Grad
– class of 2011. College was not part
of my original life plan. I joined the
Marines at a young age and started a
family. When I left the Marine Corps,
I became an apprentice carpenter.
A slump in the housing industry
led to the loss of my employment.
I waited a while in hopes it would get better, but to no avail. In 2006
I found myself practically crawling to SCC for help, depressed and somewhat
defeated – but college put me back on my feet. With the help of SCC advisors and
the Foundation, what started as a terrible setback in my life has now become a
tremendous opportunity to reach my true potential.
I will admit there are unique challenges in being a returning learner. Our eyelids
can get awfully heavy, especially late in the afternoon. I fell asleep in class once,
and the student sitting next to me took my pulse! I know I look old; I just never
realized that I was beginning to look dead!
Despite these small challenges, I found a new positive attitude by attending SCC. I
have witnessed that everyone who is a part of this college demonstrates a sincere
regard for others with one goal – student success. For me, SCC has been a place to
experience something else – hope. It is with my sincerest gratitude that I wish to
say Thank You for transforming my life!

12 Hi-tech teaching –
Using the latest technology in science makes learning more exciting and successful.
The introduction of Vernier LabQuest equipment at SCC started about two years ago with six handheld devices. Professors like Stacey Thater are able to “teach the way science is used in the field.” These portable machines utilize field-specific modules such as spectrographs, oxygen sensors and probes to instantly record data that can be saved to a flash drive, computer or shown to the class through a projector.
“These devices allow much more time for learning, versus strictly collecting data,” Thater said. “Students now have the ability to see instant results and start to observe how they can be applied.”
The SCC Foundation funded six additional devices this year, allowing more students than ever to move from class engagement to field application.
Lunch and learn – Students, faculty and staff at SCC have
the unique opportunity once a year to get
a competitive edge through a luncheon
hosted by the Career Center called
Panache that Pays. This luncheon
is based on the book of the same name
by author Maria Everding, who leads
participants through a 1.5-hour “lunch
and learn” experience covering everything
from which fork to use to when it is
appropriate to use your cell phone.
Guests pay a nominal fee to attend
the event, while the SCC Foundation picks
up the tab so participants can receive
a copy of Everding’s book to use as a
reference the next time they need to shine
when a new job is on the line.
Your gifts help SCC students stand out in a crowd.

Student profile – Kimberly Ferguson, Cottleville/Weldon Spring
Rotary Club Scholarship Recipient
After her 18-year career ended with the closure
of a local manufacturing plant, Kimberly
returned to college with a new perspective
on life. This mother of two young children
decided it was time to seek out a new career
as a social worker.
With a love of learning, a desire to
inspire her own children and to be a good
leader, Kimberly is dedicated to maintaining
her 4.0 GPA and is “truly grateful for the
generosity of the Rotary Club for believing
in (her) academic goals.”
Kimberly’s scholarship is just one of
many awards given annually through the
Foundation’s Scholarship Program.

Making drawings come to life – With the help of an innovative machine called the MakerBot, SCC’s Computer-Aided
Design students can now watch their drawings
literally come to life. At a fraction of the cost
of a classic 3D printer (nearly $40,000), the
MakerBot was purchased with a $1,000 grant
from the SCC Foundation. The “bot,” which melts small strands
of plastic in layers to create a 3D model, arrived on campus in late October – as a kit
with many pieces. The SCC Engineering Club,
with the help of Professor David Niermann,
accepted the challenge of putting it together it.
“Assembling the kit was, itself, a unique learning experience,” Niermann said.
“Students used their skills in electrical wiring,
woodworking and computer programming to
bring this amazing machine to life.” Access to this equipment makes SCC’s
CAD and pre-engineering programs a cut
above and students more qualified to enter
the workforce.
Your gifts help SCC students stand out in a crowd.
Gifts to the Foundation are distributed in many ways such as grants and scholarships, like those mentioned here. To learn year-round about the Foundation, check out our website at stchas.edu/foundation or ‘like’ us on Facebook at facebook.com/sccfoundation.

Since 1995, the Employee Sponsored Program (ESP), has been fulfilling the mission of spreading compassion and good will to students, co-workers and our community. Through generous donations from more than 200 ESP members, over $20,000 was raised this year to provide scholarships, celebration of life mementos to members of SCC who have lost a loved one, and fund campus enhancement projects.

Micah Denham – an ESP Scholarship recipient. An engraveable frame and memorial poem is sent as a celebration of life memento to faculty and staff who have lost a loved one. The ESP Committee selected three combined seating/planting units for patrons of the Fine Arts Building (FAB) to enjoy before performances. The native grasses were selected and provided by the SCC Grounds Department, who will also maintain the planters.

The second annual Rhythm & Ribs (R&R) event was another huge success! Despite a few rain drops, 1,100 people got to Eat, Drink & Rock the night away ... for Education! Party goers savored ribs from Ethyl’s Smokehouse and Mannino’s Market and enjoyed chicken from our new neighbor Chick-fil-A ... all while listening to the sweet sounds of the St. Charles West Jazz Ensemble and Smash Band.

Sixth grade science teacher, John Hall III of Orchard Farm, was presented the sixth annual Distinguished Alumni Award at this year’s commencement. Hall decided at age 29 to return to college and explains, “Had it not been for SCC, college would not have been an option.”
It was a “mind-expanding moment” he had during a phys-ics class at SCC that made him realize his purpose and change his major from pre-engineering to education.
“My teacher, Stacey Thater, had the ability to see the big picture and the interconnected-
ness of science with the physical world – a trait we both share,” Hall said. “He inspired me to become a teacher so that I could help students demystify the physical world around them and impact them in the same way that Mr. Thater affected me.”
