Durham MP Erin O’Toole Appointed to Minister of Veterans Affairs CanadaPrime Minister Stephen Harper announced the appointment of Durham Member of Parliament Erin O’Toole to the cabinet position of Minister of Veterans Affairs Canada. Minister O’Toole was sworn in at Rideau Hall in early January.
“I am humbled by this opportunity to serve our veterans and appreciate the Prime Minister’s confidence in me,” said Minister O’Toole. “From the age of 18 when I joined the military out of high school up until today, the men and women of the Canadian Forces, their families, and our veterans, have always been a very important part of my life.”
“My continued commitment to the Durham riding will remain a top priority. I have an experienced and capable team and we will continue to work hard on behalf of our communities and constituents,” said Minister O’Toole.
Minister O’Toole brings some unique experience to this portfolio. He served in the Canadian Armed Forces for 12 years and has been a passionate advocate for military families and veterans for many years. He is a member of Branch 178 of the Royal Canadian Legion in Bowmanville and served on the Board of Governors of the Royal Military College of Canada, his alma matter. He was one of the founders of the True Patriot Love Foundation and has worked alongside many passionate Canadians over the years, supporting our veterans and preserving Canada’s military history.
Minister O’Toole was elected on November 26, 2012 in a by-election and was appointed to Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Trade in September 2013. Born and raised in Bowmanville and Port Perry, Minister O’Toole lives in Courtice with his wife Rebecca and children Mollie (8) and Jack (3).

snapd CLARINGTONA Letter from
Hello, Port Perry and Clarington! It’s hard to believe that we’re already a month in to 2015. Time sure is flying fast! January was a colder month compared to December, but that didn’t keep our residents from spending time outside. On the first day of the year, Clarington resi-dents took a dip in Lake Ontario for the Clarington Polar Bear Swim. It was freez-ing cold outside, but the goal of raising funds for the Sick Kids Foundation took precedence over the swimmers’ desire to stay warm. Great job to all of the brave
participants. Only in Canada, eh?
In fact, January was a very Canadian month in our community. It seemed that everyone was heading to the rink to play hockey or to get in a skate.
In Bowmanville, the Shannon Houston Roehrig Memorial Flamesfest Hockey Tournament took place again, attracting female hockey play-ers from all over Ontario and Quebec. It was a great weekend and numerous Clarington teams ended up winning medals. Another great tournament was the Pond Hockey Charity Tournament that took place in Scugog. Many hockey players braved the cold to raise money for local charities.
In addition to these tournaments, there were many free skates includ-ing ones offered by Tim Hortons, MP Erin O’Toole, and the Scugog council. Residents had the opportunity to get some free ice time as well as mingle with our MP and council members. The Clarington
council hosted their own meet and greet as well; however, they chose to have theirs at the Council Chambers instead of on the ice.
Looking to February, we can look forward to even more hockey. The Port Perry MoJacks and the Clarington Eagles hockey teams’ sea-sons are coming to a close. Be sure to catch their final regular season games and stay tuned to the playoffs action. Our online calendar will have the playoff information once it has been determined.
Of course, no February would be complete without Valentine’s Day events. An awesome fundraiser that I recommend being a part of is Boston Pizza’s Heart Shaped Pizza Night. On February 14, head to participating Boston Pizza restaurants to purchase a heart-shaped pizza. $1 from each heart-shaped pizza will be donated to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. It’s a great cause, so even if you don’t have a significant other to share a pizza with, you don’t need to feel bad about eating the whole thing to yourself!
Be sure to read our calendar to find out about the other events that are happening this month, including the much anticipated Scugog Feb Fest and the Clarington Mayor’s Gala for the Arts.
This month is the first time ever that Port Perry has its own edition of the paper. We are very excited about this extension of snapd, and Port Perry residents can have this to look forward to every month. Please support our team as we grow our services by continuing to submit your events to us, and by liking/following both snapd Clarington and snapd Port Perry on Facebook and Twitter.
From the snapd team, have a safe and happy month, and thank you for reading our paper.

I’m all Ears!As a hearing aid wearer, I can tell you first hand that hearing aids are intimidating. No one likes to talk about them and no one likes to admit that they need them. Once a person has made the decision to investigate further, where should they start? There is so much conflicting information available out there from magazine ads promoting perfect hearing for two easy payments of $19.95 to the neighbour of a friend who bought two hearing aids for $10,000 and cannot tolerate them. What is true and more importantly what are the questions a person should ask?
There are two crucially important factors to keep in mind. The first is that you get what you pay for. If a deal seems too good to pass up it should probably be avoided. Common sense should tell you that any medical devices which are mail order or bought online have the potential to inflict more harm than good.
Secondly, the clinic that you work with is equally important, so choose wisely! Do you feel comfortable with the person you’re talking to? Do they have enough experience that you have confidence in their ability? What is their policy on returning the hearing aids if you’re dissatisfied and what charges would you incur if you decide to return them. Most reputable clinics will not charge a return fee because they understand that hearing aids are a process. What follow-up regiment do they follow for new hearing aids? Do they have frequent visits as you adjust to them or are you left on your own to contact them with problems? Your mobility may be just fine now but what if you slip and fall on the ice, will they come to your home for ongoing service appointments? Do they even offer ongoing service? Hearing aids should be thoroughly cleaned by a professional every 3-4 months. When a person wears hearing aids they often get a wax accumulation in their ears so it’s important to know if they will remove that wax from your ears instead of sending you somewhere else to have it done.
It is also important to note that everyone has a different experience with their devices. You should talk to your friends and neighbours about their experiences but keep in mind that you will likely find things different from how they did. Make sure you feel comfortable with what you’re doing and not being forced into something you’re nervous about. If something doesn’t seem right, get a second opinion somewhere else.
On the first day of 2015, people from all over Clarington came to the Newcastle Waterfront to jump into the icy water. Heather McFarland and the McFarland family have organized the swim, also known as the “Dash of Insanity” and the “Plunge for Life,” for the past 11 years. The goal of the recurring event is to raise awareness for the need of organ and tissue donations. In addition, each of the swimmers collected pledges to raise money for paediatric liver disease research for the Sick Kids Foundation. About 100 brave souls took the dip with temperatures reaching minus 16 degrees and with 50 km/h winds. It was great to see such a huge turnout for such a cold event!

Assistant captain, Lucas Clark, fights for the puck during second period action
Sunday, January 18 saw the Port Perry MoJacks face the Uxbridge Bruins. Hockey is very popular in Port Perry as evidenced by the stands that were full of spectators. This hard fought game brought about a slew of penalties which unfortunately cost the Mojacks the game, 7-3. These young players put on a good show with end to end rushes and great passes. Junior C hockey is a great brand of hockey, and if you have not seen it yet, you should give it a try — you wont be disappointed.

MOJACKS ALUMNI CHARITABLE HOCKEY GAMEThe 2014-2015 Port Perry MoJacks Junior C hockey team and the MoJacks Alumni hockey team hit the ice for the 4th annual Mojacks Alumni Charitable Hockey Game at the Scugog Arena. RESOLUTION RUN 2015
Meaghan & Hope were thrilled to complete their first 5K ever!
For those who may have celebrated the new year a little too hard... and noticed that it was minus something terrible and frightening out - not counting that horrific wind chill... They might have been correct in thinking that a sensible way to
spend the first day of the new year was by rolling over and going back to sleep all cozy and warm. There were how-ever, a large contingent of people across the country who decided to lace up their runners and sprint into
a brand new 2015. New Years Day is often thought of as a self-proclaimed starting date for healthier habits, and of course, among the top New Year’s resolutions, are weight loss and exercise. To help
support that, the Running Room was proud to present their 30th Annual Resolution Run and Walk, which took place in cities across Canada. The run was was a fun way to start the new
year by tackling their health goals right away and perhaps motivating them to maintain them throughout the year. Open to runners of all ages and abilities, the fun 5K included refresh-ments, as well as a limited-edition jacket. In Oshawa, the event saw over 500 participants from across Durham Region meet at the Legends Centre to start the year off right... and despite the frigid temperatures and bone-chilling wind, there were smiles on the faces of everyone as they crossed the finish line.

Nice work!
The Scugog Shores and Heritage Centre and Archives present their latest exhibit, The Barn Raising Project. This project is on loan from the Simcoe County Museum and is a collection of handcrafted rug wall hangings of barns that are located throughout Ontario; it is a celebration of barns that are slowly disappearing with each passing year. Making the rugs was a labour of love as each rug was beautifully crafted and individually designed by the art-ists in memory of their association with the barn of their choice. A small write up beside each rug further details their experiences. This is a must see exhibit. It is very well presented and a delightful surprise to any who are new to this craft! Wine and cheese were available on opening day, compliments of the Country Cheese Company in Ajax. It is open from January 12 - March 20. For more info, [email protected]

Diabetes CAN BE REVERSEDIt sounds too good to be true, but diabetes can be prevented, and even reversed! You have to make some changes, but with the right tools and determination it is very much possible with these considerations:
• Food: Knowing what foods to eat and what to avoid. Eating real, whole food that your body can recognize, that will NOT spike insulin out of normal range.
• Supplements: There are known vitamins, minerals and herbs that can help with blood sugar balance, cravings, insulin and cortisol.
• Exercise: It uses energy from your muscles that is associated with sugar storage, and thus helps with sugar metabolism.
• Knowing why you want to prevent or reverse diabetes helps you keep the commitment to yourself. Do you want to lose weight? Improve energy? Keep up with your grand-kids? Improve your sex life? Feel better? Look better?
Too many, too few or the wrong types of carbs at the wrong times leave you with a hormonal imbalance linked to high insulin, inflammation, aging, weight gain, cravings, erratic fluctuations in energy, poor thinking and many other undesirable consequences.
What to eat: • Eat slow release carbohydrates, also know as low glycemic. These carbs have more fibre to help
slow the release of sugars, limit insulin production and help you feel full longer. Research shows that low glycemic carbs have a lower impact on inflammation that leads to disease. Examples of slow release, low glycemic carbs: chickpeas, barley, most veggies, quinoa, brown rice, carrots, dates, apples, nuts.
• Eat protein with your meals and snacks. Protein also helps create a slower release of blood sugars to help keep insulin within normal levels.
What to avoid: • The 5 Whites: sugar, bread, rice, pasta and pototoes because they are quick release and high
glycemic carbohydrates.
• Artificial sweeteners that your body can’t recognize because it contributes to the toxic load and inflammation that can lead to disease.
• Stress because excess cortisol, your stress hormone, has a huge effect on blood sugar levels and insulin.
The benefits are amazing:It’s not about eliminating carbs, but knowing when to eat them and what type to help promote hormonal balance and prevent excess insulin. Not only will this help prevent or reverse diabetes and insulin resistance, it also leads to higher metabolism, improved energy, appetite control and freedom from cravings. It’s worth the time and effort!
We recommend working with a Holistic Nutritionist for coaching that can help you bring your body back into balance and transition into healthy. Our focus is fitting healthy into your life, for life, so it’s not a long-term struggle. We meet you at your beginning and take you to the finish.

RADIOLOGISTS GIVE TO LAKERIDGE HEALTH
Bob Baker, CEO of the Lakeridge Health Foundation during the special announcement
Lakeridge Health received a pretty exciting Christmas present from its radiology department this past December 19, as thirteen members of the department have decided to donate a good chunk of their paycheques - $150,000 over the next five years, to help Lakeridge grow in the future. “It’s always incredible to receive a donation, and this one is particularly special because it’s from our own people,” says Kevin Empey, President and CEO of Lakeridge Health. The five-year commitment won’t be a one-time deal for the department either, as they plan to renew it every five years to ensure the money goes to where it’s needed. The donation, will be shared between the hospital’s sites in Bowmanville, Oshawa and Port Perry and will help to fund new equipment and building improvements and expansions at those sites. It is hoped this pledge will act as a benchmark and catalyst for future giving within the community. Lakeridge Health has ambitious growth plans for Durham Region that include new technology and equipment, new laboratory and pharmacy space and senior-friendly hospital rooms.

HOLIDAY HAMPER PROGRAMGrade five students from Duke of Cambridge P.S. organized a food and toy drive to support the women and children of Bethesda House. Bethesda House is a local shelter providing support for women, with or without children, who are fleeing domestic abuse. The students set goals of collect-ing 700 food items and 700 new toys to fill hampers for the shelter, and they inspired the school to eventually reach both of these goals. The students also assisted with packing hampers to complete the experience. Teacher Beth-Ann was quoted saying, “The idea to support Bethesda House came about via five students from the grade five class.” Congratulations to these students for the awesome contribution that they made!

FIRST LEGO LEAGUE 2015
Samraggi, Nansi & Vedashri
Hundreds and hundreds of Ontario students flocked to the Durham College and University of Ontario Institute of Technology campus, as both institutions hosted the annual FIRST LEGO League’s
Ontario East Provincial Championships. For Inspiration and Recreation of Science and Technology or FIRST, shows kids the fun of math and
science and the annual event saw students ages 9 to 14 square off with the robots they constructed using those beloved blocks. The competition allows students to use math and science to help build autonomous robots and use them to solve problems and complete
a mission which is - let’s face it - ultimately fun and rewarding. To participate in this event, teams had to qualify from one
of 23 regional tournaments across the province and were competing for a chance to win a Champions award, which
earns them an invitation to the FLL World Festival in St. Louis, Missouri this coming April.
