LETTERS TO THE EDiTOR

Undeserving Cover Girl!

I am absolutely furious that you guys put Priyanka Chopra on the cover. With so

many talented actresses out there like Rani Mukherji and Konkona Sen Sharma, why did you feature this ditzy Barbie doll?

Not only does she set a bad example for the youth of our community, she is no good as an actress. Her success in films has been purely due to luck and her co-stars.

From her actions it is obvious that her message to the youth is “Focus on your looks, win a few pageants, and you can be an actress.” Do we need such people in the media spotlight?

Many other thespians, like the ones named above, actually study acting to cultivate a lifelong passion, not prance around in a swimsuit at the Miss World pageant.

Krithika MurugappanDallas, TX

Priyanka Chopra has proven to be a hardworking and dedicated actress. For your information, she has indeed trained under veteran actor-couple Anupam and Kirron Kher. In addition she spends a large amount of her time travelling the world doing charity work for Unicef, thus making her what we believe is an excellent role-model for South Asian youth.

Magazine Playing Hard to Get?

Where exactly is your magazine? I have searched for it at all the local

desi stores and cannot seem to find it anywhere?

It is irritating for me to make a separate trips to desi stores just to look for the magazine, only to find it sold out. Why don’t you refill copies more often?

If you really care about your readers, you should make sure they can get the magazine whenever they want.

Mansoor Khan Plano, TX

Magazine distribution is time consuming and expensive. Our executives are working overtime to improve availability across the vast DFW Metroplex. Moreover, Salaam Namaste is the most popular desi print magazine in the US, and as such it is sold out almost immediately after release. To ensure that you get your copy regularly, please subscribe to the magazine using the form.

Salaam Namaste’s Biggest Fan

My names is Pinky Joseph and I am 11 years old. I love your magazine!

I always flip to the Bollywood gossip first, since I love knowing what’s going on with the stars.

I also love keeping up with all the latest Bollywood fashion! The trends on the ‘in and out’ page are fun too. Keep up the good work!

You are my favorite magazine!

Pinky JosephCarrollton, TX

Festivals dividing the community?

I read article titled “Celebrating Unity through Festivals” by Dilshad Dayani in

your October issue. The author seems to be in her own little fantasy land. She talks about festivals unifying communities and people of the Subcontinent.

But during the recent Eid and Dushera festivals India was burning in the flames of communal riots? On the same day bombs exploded across Pakistan’s major cities

killing several innocent people. If festivals were capable of unifying communities like the author feels, this kind of bloodbath wouldn’t have taken place anywhere in the world, right?

Nilesh PadgaonkarAllen, TX

It is unforunate that acts of terrorism are being perpetrated across the Subcontinent. But we believe that the philosophy behind these festivals fosters unity among diverse groups within the South Asian community.

- EditorGreat Magazine!

Congratulations! I am totally impressed by your magazine. Being a new

immigrant to the US, I was missing the vibrant culture, music, and Bollywood which I was so used to while I was in India.

I just loved going through the colourful photo features in the magazine, especialy the sections about Bollywood, which reminded me so much of Punjab.

I really liked your travel section since me and the Mrs. want to explore the US as much as we can during our children’s vacations.

???DID U KNOW??? • Dev Anand rejected Zanjeer and that gave us the biggest star indian cinema would ever

see (Amitabh Bachchan). • Danny refused Gabbar Singh’s role in Sholay and now he must be repenting that decision. • Amitabh Bachchan did not do Mr. India. And the movie turned Anil Kapoor into the

biggest star of the ‘80s. • Saif Ali Khan rejected Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and probably wishes he could turn

back the clock. • Almost every heroine rejected Karisma’s role in Dil To Pagal Hai. Combined, they could

not match the number of trophies Karisma won for that role. • Twinkle Khanna rejected the role which was written solely for her and even used her name

(Tina) in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. • Shah Rukh Khan was the first choice for Lagaan and Munna Bhai. Those were two of the biggest hits this century. • As if choosing Refugee over Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai was not enough. Kareena Kapoor said

no to Kal Ho Naa Ho too.• Hrithik Roshan refused Rang De Basanti. Guess he doesn’t have super powers while

choosing films.

Azeem Fankaar: Talat Mahmood

Singer Talat Mahmood was acknowledged as india’s

Shahenshah-e-Ghazal, and though he always chose to maintain a low profile, he continues to be in our memories because of his velvet-smooth voice and evergreen songs.

Blessed with perfect diction, intonation and a melodious voice, especially for singing ghazals, Talat Mahmood made waves when AiR Calcutta offered him an opportunity to sing in its talent-hunt show. His debut ghazal — Tasveer teri dil mera behla na sakegi… — became an instant hit. According to HMV, more than 100,000 records of the song were sold in the first month. ‘Tapan Kumar Sinha’, the nickname Talat had adopted for his film career, echoed all over, and was heard even in Mumbai’s film industry.

Though music director Anil Biswas was the first to invite Talat Mahmood to Mumbai, it was Naushad who first introduced him in his home production, Sunni Movies’ Babul. “i was working at Kardar Studios when an appealing gentleman approached me, asking whereabouts of Nitin Bose’s assistant. During our brief conversation, i was bowled over by his tender voice. Later, when i came to know that he was Tapan Kumar, the famous singer from Calcutta, i immediately signed him to sing all my songs in Babul. infact, after the success of Babul, Talat’s voice became famous as the voice of Dilip Kumar, and the duo gave many hits,” recalls Naushad. Their popular songs are ‘Duniya badal gayee…’ (Babul); ‘Sham-e-gham ki kasam…’ (Footpath); Ye hawa ye raat…’ (Sangdil); ‘Ae mere dil kahin…’ (Daag); ‘Ae dil mujhe aise jagah le chal…’ (Aarzoo).

“Dilip Kumar became so obsessed with Talat’s voice that when i tried to experiment with Mohd. Rafi’s voice on him in the film Deedar, he out rightly rejected it. However, after a lot of cajoling, he finally agreed,” adds Naushad.

About Talat’s voice, thespian Dilip Kumar had this to say, “When i would lip synch his songs, i would put in much more extra effort to match his great singing prowess.”

BOLLYWOOD Gossip

Kunal Kohli’s biggest hit so far is Fanaa. Starring Aamir Khan. Reportedly, this combo — Aamir

and Kunal — are expected to join hands again for a fresh project. Also, after branching out from Yash Raj, Kunal has shook hands with PVR Pictures. True?

“I am still writing my next film and I haven’t met any actors,” Kunal sounds amused when I question him about his next film, “I know how

these rumours originate. Since we meet actors socially, people jump to conclusions that we are working together. But I haven’t met Aamir for a month, so even this theory holds no weight.”

Has he shook hands with PVR? “Everyone’s keen to know who’s going to partner my next project. But, believe me, I haven’t signed with any company yet,” he states.

Aamir and Kunal to team up again?

Dream Girl Hema Malini turned 60 on October 16, 2008. Her daughters Esha and Ahana organised a grand surprise party for

the event on October 20th. “I feel 16 at 60. I guess age has nothing to do with creativity, but it certainly has a lot to do with maturity and dedication. I have lived life on my own terms and conditions and now when I look back, I feel happy about all the decisions I have taken,” says an exuberant Hema.

“I enjoyed myself thoroughly because all the people I love, all my close relatives and family were there. And of course Dharamji. How could he not be there?” added the Dream Girl.

Ask her what the love of her life gifted her and Hema first brushes the question off. “I’m too old for gifts. And still, I’m constantly getting

gifts on my birthdays. The older guests gave me sarees. The younger ones made cards. As for Dharamji he has given me so much already. For this birthday he gave his gift in advance.”

What was that gift? “Some very elegant jewelry

that I really wanted. Actually, my birthday celebration this year went on for a week. It started with a havan on 14th and ended with the party last night where I had a Bengali couple singing Ghazals (I like to encourage new talent). While they sang our party suddenly turned into a dance party. We all hit the floor.”

At 60, Hema seems to have suddenly discovered her fun side in a big way. “I was always a fun person,” she protests. “When you’ve two growing daughters you kind of grow up with them and learn to have fun.”

Any regret about the birthday party? “None. But Rekha couldn’t come. I always invite her for all my birthday parties. This time I invited Zeenat (Aman). And she was kind enough to come. It’s good to catch up with colleagues once in a while. I’d have invited Raakhee also. But she wouldn’t come.”

Hema’s special surprise!

Jodhaa Akbar, Hrithik win awards at Golden Minbar Film Festival in Russia

Ashutosh Gowariker’s magnum opus Jodhaa Akbar (which premiered in 2007 in a grand fashion at Hollywood Theaters in

Irving, TX) has not only captured the hearts of film buffs in India but also impressed the global audiences. A year down the film continues

to be praised by film critics and audiences alike.

Recently, Jodhaa Akbar won the prestigious Grand Pix award at Golden Minbar, the Film Festival for Muslim Cinema which is held at Kazan, Russia. The lead actor, Hrithik Roshan, was awarded Best Actor Award for his magnificent performance as Emperor Akbar.

Jodhaa Akbar shared the Best Film honours with an Iranian film, M for Mother. The films were selected by the Jury in the Official Selection consisting

of 35 films in Competition (10 Full-length feature film, 12 Short-length feature films and 13 Documentary films).

“This is wonderful! I am overwhelmed with this news. It is an honour not only for me and my co-producer Ronnie Screwvala, but for the entire team of Jodhaa Akbar. And I would like to thank the Jury for it. I am especially happy and proud that Hrithik won the Best Actor. His portrayal of Akbar is a magnificent one, full of nuances and detailing which is very rarely seen on screen. I would also like to thank the Organizers for including Jodhaa Akbar in The International Film Festival of Muslim Cinema Golden Minbar”, said a very honored and grateful Ashutosh Gowariker.

Imran asks Shruti to sing in ‘Luck’!

Imran Khan and his Luck co-star Shruti Hassan go back a long way. Shruti, her younger sister Akshara and their mom Sarika were regular house guests in the Khan household at the time

when Sarika was based in Chennai and was a frequent visitor to Mumbai.

“That’s right,” concedes Imran. “We almost grew up together. Initially, Soham wanted to sign a new girl opposite me in Luck. I recommended Shruti. And I’m glad I did. Shruti has turned out to be wonderful in Luck. In terms of her look, talent and body language, Shruti is not your conventional heroine at all. She’s very unconventional.”

Shruti’s real-life status as a rock singer is now being incorporated into Luck. Says Imran, “I’ve discussed the idea of Shruti singing in Luck with my director Soham Shah, and he’s kicked about it. So Shruti will be singing in Luck. In fact Soham and music director Pritam are having music sessions right now. A song is being designed for Shruti.”

What about Imran singing for himself? Not too many people know that Imran sings quite well and entertains family, friends and girlfriend with his singing. At first Imran brushes off the idea. “You’ve seen Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na. You’ve seen how badly I sing in the climax? But I do have a steady voice. I sing the lower notes well. So with a little bit of training I may be able to sing for one of my films.”

For now Imran is happy doing all the rugged outdoor sports with Shruti Hassan in Soham Shah’s Luck. “I think it’s a helluva concept. No one has done any film like Luck before.” In fact, Imran would love to be part of the sports film that Soham will now be directing for Sanjay Dutt Productions. “I love outdoor spor t s , Sanju Baba and I love working with Soham. So there’s no

reason why I wouldn’t want to be part of Soham’s next.”

Imran says he finds it easy to get along with all the directors and co-stars he has so far

worked with. “I do have an immediate and easy connectivity with people. I guess that

quality works for me on screen. My aim is to play characters that people

can easily connect with. That’s true of Jaane Tu...Ya

Jaane Na, Kidnap, Luck and Delhi Belly. These are the only films I’ve signed so far.”

BOLLYWOOD GossipKunal Kapoor’s leading role

Tall and handsome Kunal Kapoor has off late been seen in cameos (in films like Bachna

Ae Haseeno and Welcome to Sajjanpur) rather than full fledged roles. However, the actor’s

next few films will have him playing pivotal roles rather than just a guest appearance.

“Yes, I am doing Anurag Kashyap’s film. It’s a solo lead project and is a big budget action flick. It’s a movie that requires at least a year of pre-production, so we’ll begin late next year,” said Kunal.

Well, that sure gives Kunal ample time to beef up those muscles and get in shape for his character. Besides Anurag Kashyap’s film, Kunal will also be seen in Rahul Dholakia’s Lamha. Looks like, the sun seems to be shining brightly once again for this talented actor.

Golmaal series will continue!

Director Rohit Shetty waits with bated breath for the response to Golmaal Returns. “It’s bigger, it’s better, it’s much more entertaining than Golmaal,” he says of his new film.

Not many are aware, the sequel to Golmaal happened by chance. “I was working on an altogether different story; it was meant to take off from where the first part ended. But I realized that it was getting boring. I wasn’t enjoying writing it. Around that time Yunus Sajawal bounced off an entirely new story of four guys and four girls. When I read the script, I realized that it could easily pass off as the sequel to Golmaal. And when I narrated the plotline to Rajbhai Mehta [of Ashtavinayak] and also Ajay [Devgan], they jumped at it. That gave me the impetus to go ahead with the sequel,” Rohit recalls.

Rohit is confident that he’ll continue with the Golmaal series. But before making the next instalment of this laughathon, Rohit is working on an altogether different project -- this time with Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi. “I haven’t signed either Baba [Sanju] or Arshad. Nor have I made them listen to the script. It was a casual conversation with Sanju and the next thing you know, the media has already made the announcement. There’s nothing official about this project yet,” he clarifies.

Riteish takes a back-seat

You’ve heard of actors demanding extra songs and dialogues from their co-stars.

But have you ever heard of an actor offering to relinquish songs and dances for the betterment of the film?

That’s what Riteish Deshmukh did on the sets of Milap Jhaveri’s Jaane Kahan Se Aayee Hai last week. On being told he was required to do an elaborately choreographed song sequence Riteish questioned the wisdom and sheer logic of his character breaking into intricate dance steps and offered to let the film’s young romantic lead Ruslaan Mumtaz do all the dancing.

Disbelieving of the confidence level displayed by his co-star, Ruslaan says, “The choreography by Bosco-Caesar involved a lot of ‘B-Boing’, which is the hip-hop style of dancing. The girls Jacqueline Fernandes and

After going with the working title I Believe In Angels,

throughout its production in London, Arshad has finally zeroed -in on a final title for his first production, co-starring Dia Mirza which is directed by Kabeer Kaushik. “We’ve named the film Kaun Bola. See the film, and you’ll know why. It’s the perfect title. Hopefully, audiences will agree,” says Arshad currently shooting for Anil Kapoor’s Shortcut in Bangkok.

Arshad Warsi is also doing a film called Chance Pe Dance….to be directed Rohit Shetty’s assistant, Raminder Singh Suri. But sorry, he has no dancing to do in the film. For a dancing-star, doing a film called Chance Pe Dance with no dancing is a form of death. “What can I do?” Arshad protests hard. “I love to dance. I know I dance well. But directors don’t allow me to dance. In Chance Pe Dance, I play this out-and-out loser who needs that one big break to change his life. And when that break happens in his life all hell breaks lose. Sadly, I don’t get to dance again.”

In Arshad’s last release Krazzy 4, it was Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan who got

to dance and in his next release Shortcut, Sanjay Dutt and Anil Kapoor have been roped in to jive with leading lady Amrita Rao. No Arshad in the item song. Arshad says he’s clueless. “I’ve many times asked directors to let me do some dancing. But they’ve ignored my request. This is a funny and strange industry. But I love it even if some people choose to be unfair to me.”

According to a source close to a project that Arshad was offered, “The film’s hero had laid a pre-condition. No dancing from Arshad. If you look at any of Arshad’s big projects with big banners in recent times --Munnabhai, Shortcut, Krazzy 4 or even Salaam Namaste… the other guys got to dance. In Krazzy 4, Irrfan Khan got to dance with Rakhi Sawant. Not Arshad. In fact the hero in our film specifically forbade Arshad from moving a leg saying, as it is he’s a scene stealer and we don’t need him to be floor-burner.”

Is this one of the reasons why Arshad is producing his own film? “Probably, yes. You could say that. My film is looking gorgeous. We’ve one more schedule to go in Goa. Then we’ll be done.”

Arshad’s a scene stealer?

Lara Dutta’s ‘Jumbo’ voiceover!

A while ago, it was reported that Akshay Kumar and Dimple Kapadia were lending their voices to Percept Picture Company’s

forthcoming animated flick Jumbo. Now, news has broke that Lara Dutta will also be doing a voice over for the same.

This is the first time that the beautiful actress would be associated with an animated film and surprisingly, Lara has agreed to lend her voice for free. The actress apparently loved the film when she watched it and immediately decided that she would want to be a part of it.

Looks like animation flicks are the latest craze for all our B-town celebs. After all, everyone from SRK (The Incredibles) to Saif Ali Khan (Roadside Romeo) and Kareena Kapoor (Roadside Romeo) to Lara Dutta (Jumbo) seem to be more than excited to lend their voices to the animated characters.

Priyadarshan’s multi-starrer De Dana Dan scheduled for Jan ‘09

The super-prolific Priyadarshan’s next comedy, De Dana Dan, a kind of follow up though not a sequel to Hera Pheri for producer Ratan Jain

(of Venus), just got bigger... and delayed. The film now features Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Suniel Shetty, Neha Dhupia and Sameera Reddy. Says the sultry actress, “I’ve never worked with Priyan before. But I think he liked my comic timing in Race, where I played Anil Kapoor’s air headed assistant. That’s how I got De Dana Dan. I’ve always been a big Priyan fan, by the way.”

Sighs the super-successful director, “Bam Bam Bhole is not a small art house film. It’s a full-on entertainer. And it needs nurturing. Once I release Billo Barbar, I need to promote Bam Bam Bhole properly. De Dana Dan with Akshay, Katrina, Sameera Reddy, Suniel Shetty and Neha Dhupia has gone forward by a few months.”

This was meant to be the Southern sensation Asin’s launch pad. “Yes,” concedes Priyan. “But only initially. Once the script crystallized it was Katrina all the way.”

Sonal Sehgal begged off and were given easier steps. That left only me and Riteish. But Riteish put his foot down. He said, ‘How can I dance so well when I play a loser?’ And he volunteered to just stand quietly while I danced.”

Ruslaan is all praise for his co-star. “Not too many actors would be happy without songs and dances just to be in character. Riteish is allowing me to do all the hero-giri because he says I play the filmy hero and therefore I should do all the filmy stuff.

Big B replaced?

After saying ‘No’ to Big B, Oscar nominated director Deepa Mehta has signed Akshay Kumar to play the lead in her next film, Komagata

Maru. It was earlier reported in the media that Big B couldn’t do the film since it is a Canadian Production and their government expects the actors to have a Canadian citizenship. The film has therefore gone to Akshay Kumar.

Komagata Maru is an epic film based on a true story surrounding the voyage of the ship ‘Komagata Maru’ from India to Vancouver in the early part of the last century with 376 passengers on board seeking a new life in the promise land. It is a film of high level government intrigue, duplicity, racism, spying, military engagements, court battles, sedition, and assassination. It is a journey of one man’s courage that challenged the largest empire in the world. Set in the year 1914, the film spans two continents. It bears open the heroism of Gurdit Singh, who dares to have an impossible dream- a life of freedom, equality, and dignity. The film also depicts the martyrdom of Mewa Singh.

Akshay Kumar has confirmed he will be playing the lead Gurdit Singh, in this collaboration with Deepa Mehta. Talks are also underway with various actors including Hollywood A-listers making this truly an international

project.

“This is an extremely important opportunity for me to reveal a significant moment in Canadian history and illustrate the steadfast bravery of the Sikh community who sacrificed so much to help create a more tolerant community within my adopted country,” says award winning director, Deepa Mehta.

Akshay Kumar says, “I’m not used to working with the Oscar nominated directors so it is a great privilege to work

with Deepa Mehta. The subject of this film has moved me, as it is a true representation and a testimony to human struggles for freedom, justice and equality. I want to portray this real life tragedy to the world identifying how injustice was done to innocent people. It is an hour for me to play one of the bravest Sikhs, Gurdit Singh, in this tragic forgotten

moment in history. I salute those brave souls who sacrificed their lives for justice and

equality today.”

Komagata Maru is a Canadian production being produced by Hamilton-Mehta Production

Inc. in association with Akshay Kumar’s home production, Hari Om Entertainment. The film’s budget

ranges from $ 30-35 million dollars approximate and is currently in pre-production. It will begin full

production in September 2009. The story will be filmed in various locations around the world. The film will be distributed in Canada by Mongrel Media.

Golmaal Returns, the much-awaited follow-up to the uproariously comical smash-hit

Golmaal, arrives with a renewed star power, chartbusting music and more laughter than ever before!

Gopal (Ajay Devgan), who lives with his wife Ekta (Kareena Kapoor), sister Esha (Amrita Arora) and a dumb brother-in-law Lucky (Tusshar Kapoor), gets stuck in a yacht after saving an attractive woman Meera (Celina Jaitley) from some goons.

Both end up spending the night on the yacht and when he comes home the next day, his painfully suspicious wife who is also a hardcore fan of the saas-bahu serials, smells fish.

Gopal knows it’s going to be hard to quell her suspicion so he concocts a cock-and-bull story about having stayed the night with a fictitious friend called Anthony Gonsalves. Ekta refuses to buy his yarn and writes to Anthony (on a fictitious address given to her by Gopal) asking him to visit her.

Gopal convinces his junior at work, Laxman (Shreyas Talpade) to pretend to be Anthony. Everything goes according to plan till the address to which Ekta had written to Anthony turns out to be real!

If that isn’t complication enough for Gopal, a dead body is discovered at the location where he had saved Meera. The Investigating Officer, Madhav (Arshad Warsi), who is Esha’s boyfriend and also who cannot stand the

sight of Gopal, learns that the latter had been missing from home that eventful night and begins checking on him.

The investigation results in hilarious, chaotic and tricky situations, where a new lie must be invented at every instance to conceal the previous lie!

The misadventures of the seven characters result in a non-stop joyride, evoking laughter and culminating in a sweet but surprising climax to the biggest comedy title of 2008.

Character Sketch:

Ajay Devgan as Gopal. A loving husband who’s most innocent actions are misunderstood by his suspicious wife. Even when he hasn’t done anything, her overactive imagination makes her believe the worst of him. And then he’s accused of murder. The only person who can save him is a beautiful girl he spends the night with and this is the last thing he wants to tell his wife!!!

Kareena Kapoor as Ekta. Gopal’s wife is a great homemaker but a very suspicious wife. She watches Saas Bahu serials 24/7. Her ever fertile imagination has convinced her that her husband has nothing better to do than cheat on her.

Arshad Warsi as ACP Madhav Singh Ghai. He and Gopal are at loggerheads. Firstly because the ACP is dating Gopal’s sister, Esha. Secondly because they just don’t get along. Although the ACP hates Gopal, will he let emotion cloud his judgment?

Tusshar Kapoor as Lucky. He cannot speak and is stuck in between his sister and brother-in-law. He loves both of them very much. Trying to help them gets him into more trouble than he

ever bargained for.

Shreyas Talpade is Laxman Prasad Apte. He fancies himself as a trouble shooter; who can sort out anything from ‘ladki ka chakkar’ to missing fish in the dock! He loves his fiancé and would go to any lengths including committing fraud to get a job that would gain her family’s approval.

Celina Jaitley is Meera. She is a simple girl with simple dreams. All she wants to do is get married to the man she loves, she wants him to have a secure job and a happy family life.

Amrita Arora is Esha. She’s torn between her stubborn brother Gopal and her equally stubborn fiancé Madhav. She understands that the ACP has to do his duty but she’s also convinced that her brother is innocent.

Anjana Sukhani is Daisy. She is young and beautiful and she likes the quirky, but strangely silent Lucky. But she also has secrets of her own.

Film: Avakai BiryaniCast: Kamal Kamaraju, Bindu Madhavi and several fresh faces.Direction: Anish Kuruvilla

Everest Movies/ Touring Talkies, USA will distribute the much anticipated Telugu

movie Avakai Biryani expected to be released in November. Produced by Amigos Creations, the promising entertainer has been directed by Anish Kuruvilla of Dollar Dreams fame and produced by award winning director-producer Sekhar Kammula. With Avakai Biryani, Sekhar has once again proved his talent for great cinema making.

Set in a rural back drop, Avakai Biryani is a romantic drama and a musical entertainer with fresh perspective. It is a story of a heroine who believes in her pickle making recipe and a happy-go-lucky six seater auto driver fond of Hyderabadi biryani.

According to the producers, this movie will be flavorful, tangy, original and as native as Andhra pickle and Hyderabadi Biryani. The Music of Avakai Biryani was launched on October 10 and has created frenzy among fans. Industry experts expect Avakai Biryani to become the musical hit of the year.

Speaking on the occasion an exuberant Sekhar commented: “Today films with strong content are doing well. Avakai Biryani has strong storyline which came from a noble thought. I am happy to see that Anish did a great job of directing the film, all the technicians and actors cooperated well to make this movie. I appreciate Bindu Madhavi for her ease and the fact that she is a Telugu girl makes me happy. Kamal Kamaraju has matured into a good actor.”

Director Anish went down the memory lane. “Avakai Biryani brings back the happy moments that we shared together. I met Sekhar Kammula in 1998 and asked him to take me as his assistant. Since then I have learnt a lot from him. He felt that I can direct and gave this chance, for which I am thankful to him. Manikanth Kadri’s music is the soul of Avakai Biryani.”

The music is simply lilting and makes you want to hum the tunes, even if you don’t

know the language. There are six songs in the movie and all of them are potential hits. The song which has received greatest ratings, Veerudena has Shreya sounding like a diva, given the scope of this western-tinged melody. On the other hand in Adidigalo, besides Karthik’s awesome vocal performance, Manikanth’s background scores soar sky high. Another equally fantastic song Maamidi kommaki has an absorbing Andhra folk tune and the raucous Chindesi chinna pedda is unabashedly massy and thoroughly whistle-worthy! The other two, Nannu choopagala and Nadiche yedu, are thoroughly enjoyable melodies.

1. Rumor has it that newly married man Zayed Khan was getting a little too chummy with Blue co-star Lara Dutta this past month in the Bahamas, where the film is shooting. In fact, Lara and Zayed get their makeup and wardrobe fittings done together every morning. When cornered, Zayed responded “Arre yaar—We all get ready together before shootings to save space. There is nothing going on.” One has to wonder though, that for a film with an A-List cast and an extravagant Rs.100 crore budget, surely they can afford separate makeup trailers for each of the stars? There’s no smoke without fire, Zayed!

2. Poor Sonam Kapoor seems to be having quite a hard time finding work after the monumental failure of her debut, Saawariya. Word on the street is that Anil Kapoor’s daughter has even resorted to doing an item number in Yashraj’s upcoming project New York, co-starring John Abraham, Neil Nitin Mukesh, and Katrina Kaif, in a bid to get more work. We know that your

plate is empty Sonam, but the item number route didn’t work for Shamita Shetty, and it certainly won’t work for you.

3. September’s Salaam Namaste coverboy Imran Khan was rumored to be getting cozy with Luck co-star, Shruti Hassan (daughter of film legend Kamal Hassan). This star-kid pair up would normally be a match made in tinseltown heaven, save for one thing: Imran’s steady girlfriend of 3 years, Avantika

Mallik. Sources say that after hearing the gossip, a livid Avantika is now on the sets constantly, keeping tabs on her man at all times. Looks like someone inherited Uncle Aamir Khan’s wandering eye!

4. The crew of Karan Johar’s next production, Wake Up Sid!, are reportedly going bonkers. Why? Lead stars Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma simply refuse to get along. The two star-kids apparently fight about EVERYTHING, from the script to

the costumes to the blocking. In fact, during the first week of shooting, production had to be shut down after Ranbir stormed into his trailer in a huff, refusing to come out for over 3 hours. When questioned, Karan Johar claimed, “There was a technical malfunction on set. Ranbir and Konkona have a fabulous working relationship.” Whatever you say, Karan.

5. On a Karan Johar note, the rushes of his new film Dostana, starring John Abraham, Abhiskek Bachchan, and last

month’s Salaam Namaste Covergirl Priyanka Chopra are super hot. Especially scorching are the rushes of the item number filmed on Miami Beach, picturized on a sizzling Shilpa Shetty. The song is anticipated to be such a tremendous success that Dharma Productions is releasing a special DVD with just the music video of the track one week after the movie’s release. I don’t know about you guys, but I’ll be picking up my copy as soon as possible.

DIRECT TALK

Talha Ansari is the CFO of Radio Salaam Namaste 104.9 FM and Everest Heights. [email protected]

It has been over 61 years since the Indian Sub-continent was split up and we still don’t realize the importance of putting

aside petty issues and differences to unite for a better future. Why are we so easily brain washed by the utter nonsense that the self profiting politicians have sold us for the last half a century? Our minds seem to be hibernating and remain completely oblivious to the fact that our identities and our everyday life is being jeopardized by our ignorance towards reality.

It seems to me that the same sort of prejudice has rubbed off on the South Asians that are living here in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex. What I am talking about is the reluctance on our part to truly unite as people of similar culture and traditions. We may belong to different religions, but are those different religions not prevalent within one country itself? Cultures, beliefs and habits are formed from centuries of living in a particular environment and not just from religion alone. Religion may influence our beliefs but our culture is what defines us and we have to realize that centuries of co-existing as part of one country has created an inseparable bond among all of us that hail from the Sub-Continent. To ignore that fact and to try and create an imaginary block in our thinking towards each other is in my opinion not only ill-advised but extremely disastrous (just ponder upon the sixty one years of existing as separate nations).

Even though when we come to a foreign country to lead our lives away from home, we do realize the close kinship

that we have with the people of our sister country, however there are times when our brainwashed minds seem to stop functioning and we revert back to the illogical theories that we have been taught. Take for example the simple case of having a Pakistani cultural event where it is taboo

(sshhh….you don’t need to say that publicly) for someone of an Indian origin to host the show or vice versa. Oh, and yes, please spare me the rationale behind that. We have lived together for over 6000 years (Harappa and Indus Valley civilization dates back to 3000 BCE) and have been separate for only a mere 60.

Whether that separation should have happened or not is a completely different argument. As the “AAM JUNTA” we cannot have our actions dictated by the

conniving minds of politicians. Also my advice to the leaders of the community that are running the multiple organizations that represent South Asians in the DFW area (the power struggle among organizations representing the same regional communities is a topic I will harp on in some later issue — granted that I get the opportunity to write after this one) is to try and not follow the same path that the politicians of our respective countries have followed. Let us stay focused on remaining humble and uniting the people of South Asia rather than trying satisfy our giant egos. Our mantra should not be ‘Divide and Rule’ but should actually be ‘Unite and Solidify’.

Memo to the South Asian Community Organizations: Let’s Start Uniting Rather Than Dividing

GADGETS

Are you one of those people who gets confused and often irritated of punching

so many buttons on a remote, even to perform seemingly simple operations on your TV/ Audio system? Did you wish there were fewer buttons on your remote?

Well your prayers are being answered. Industrial designer Brian Garret Schuur has designed this uniquely different remote which has only one button. Yes!!! It is a single button remote, but does all the things that your regular remote does. Through just one button you

can change channels, increase

or decrease volume, pause, play, record, and switch the TV on and off.

Doesn’t it sound great? You bet! Are you wondering whether it is a concept for a new product or is it already on the market? How much it costs? Well, for now, Schuur has created a fully functioning prototype which is going through extensive testing. Once the tests are passed you will be able to buy one.

Not much of its technical or operational details have been

revealed but we know that this uses a microcontroller connected

to a laptop via wireless. The remote looks quite simple and easy to use

and we hope that looks are not deceiving this time around. It is a plain box like contraption with a single slider button. The button slides through the top part of the remote, going

through the different tasks: volume control, play and pause, record, etc. All you need to do is to slide the button to the required position and move it left or right to operate. For example, if you set it in volume, moving the button left or right will decrease or increase the sound.

Sure looks like a great product! Let us see how it does in the market.

Ever heard of a Single Button Remote?

Do you often forget to switch off electrical appliances or lights when you go out? Your electricity bill could be drastically cut

down with this brand new gadget doing rounds in the market.

AlertMe, a UK-based home surveillance company has devised this new Smart Plug which promises to help you manages your home electricity via the internet. How is that possible? Well it is pretty simple, the Smart Plug is a miniature gadget which easily fits into your pocket. The plug

can be programmed to monitor energy usage of various appliances connected to the mains at the installed location.

And once it detects gadgets connected and wasting electricity, the Smart Plug sends a wireless message to the AlertMe Hub through its Wi-Fi and GRPS box. The hub translates the signals into simple user friendly language and enables users to control their electricity. As a user you can access the internet and manage your home electricity from any web browser, both on the PC as well as the phone. You could turn off a light that you accidentally left on, you can time the plugs to die at certain time and you can even switch on the heater before you get home, so your hot bath is ready.

And what does this wonder remote electricity control gadget cost? The SmartPlugs costs an affordable $45 each, but one needs to fork out a steep $260 AlertMe service charge for it to be operational. Yes it is pretty pricey and we sure hope that with more users the prices will head south.

Do you want to be an early adopter or wait for prices to get affordable?

Fall is the season for colors in North America, this is the time when one can see blazing red, glimmering gold,

cheerful yellow and burnt orange leaves everywhere; covering the foliage of trees and crunching under our feet and being blown by the cold nippy breeze. This is the time when shutterbugs, nature lovers, travelers and people who just love to enjoy the fall colors travel to places where the season’s splendor can be seen in fully glory.

Fall colors are usually referred to as an east coast phenomenon, but a Google search research proved otherwise and we were set on a wild trip across the country to find the best fall foliage destinations. While east coast dominates the scene, there are several other places across the country that gives a fantastic display of fall. In this article, we provide you a low down on the top-10 fall foliage destinations in North America. All you have to do now is to get yourself to the place that is nearest to you and enjoy the colors.

Aspen, CO

While Colorado’s aspens don’t offer the vibrant fall color spectacle of say, the Northeast, the yellows, golds, and bold oranges that cover the mountainsides here, are spectacular indeed. And set against a backdrop of intermittent evergreens,

the colors provide enough reason to visit this mountain destination and enjoy the panoramic vistas.

The Catskills, NY

Dubbed “America’s First Wilderness,” this beautiful region harbors a variety of trees – maple, oak, birch, and beech among them – that come into their prime during the last two weeks of September or early to mid-October. Historic towns boast charming B&B’s that make great bases for

discovering the family-friendly harvest festivals, farmers’ markets, pick-your-own orchards, crafts fairs, and antique shops that define the region at this time of year.

Columbia River Gorge, OR

A geological wonder, the gorge itself weaves its way through the Cascade Mountains, forming the border between northern Oregon and southern Washington, and is loaded with lush fir forests and twisted pines, big-leaf maple, cottonwood, Oregon ash, and vine maple trees that show their colors from mid-September to mid-October. The area is also known for its dazzling waterfalls, the remarkable 620-foot Multnomah Falls chief among them.

Eastern Townships, QC

This section of Quebec stretches as far east as Maine, perhaps explaining why some consider the region to resemble neighboring New England, but with the French influence you’d expect of the province. It is probably no surprise that the maple leaf is the star of the show here. Visitors trek or ride horseback to enjoy the fiery display of color deep in the forests, particularly from mid to late-September when the foliage season reaches its peak. The foliage continues to present panoramic vistas up until end-November.

Great Smoky Mountains, TN & NC

Nestled between North Carolina and Tennessee, the most-visited National Park in the United States is home to 100 species of trees with an awesome display of turning leaves. Peak fall colors are predicted for mid-October through early November; the most memorable foliage coming courtesy of sugar maples, scarlet oaks, sweetgums, red maples, and hickories.

Lake of the Ozarks, MO

Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks is one place where the beauty of the fall season, particularly in late October, is even better, thanks to the area’s wide array of lakeside activities. Visitors can survey the Lake of the Ozarks State Park’s amazing collection of dogwoods, thong trees, and oak-hickory forests by foot or by boat, along various hiking trails or a unique aquatic trail complete with markers that explain the sights along the way.

Litchfield Hills, CT

The Litchfield Hills is a spectacular sight each autumn when the maple, oak, aspen, beech, and birch trees are ablaze with color. You can take in the splendor on one of the many driving itineraries available

or see it from the sky on a hot-air-balloon ride. Whatever your pleasure, try to visit in mid-October, when the colors are at their most vivid.

Lost Maples Natural Area, TX

While many think cacti is the main source of green in Texas, the Lone Star State is in fact home to the Lost Maples State Natural Area, which welcomes a beautiful flush come autumn, thanks in no

small part to the relatively uncommon uvalde bigtooth maples, whose reddish blush is most spectacular from mid-October through mid-November.

Pennsylvania

Move over Madison County, Pennsylvania rules when it comes to covered bridges – the state boasts more then any place in the world. If you’re an admirer, you’re in luck – covered bridges figure heavily on several different driving itineraries worth doing through the Lehigh Valley and Philadelphia countryside. Pine, hemlock, and maple trees dominate, and the colors (think gold and flaming red) reach their peak in early October and taper down till the end of November.

Washington County, ME

For hard-core foliage enthusiasts looking to escape the crowds that plague

much of New England each fall, Washington County, in Maine, is paradise for a leaf-peeper seeking solitude. The fall colors range from burnt orange to blazing red to golden yellow on the region’s birch, maple, oak, aspen, and ash trees, and are most vibrant from early to mid-October. Fall colors can be seen well until the end of November.

EXPERT COMMENT

With the housing prices dropping, many of my clients call and ask, and we are finding great deals in foreclosure we’re

hoping to buy our first house. Is now a good time to buy? What do we need to do to avoid the housing crisis?

There are two issues that we need to consider. Is it a good time for anyone to buy a house? Or, is it a good time for you to buy a new house?

Generally, any time is a good time to buy a house if you have the money and you plan to stick around for 5-7 years. The longer you plan to stay, the better.

The high number of foreclosures and the homes foreclosing nearby could significantly affect your house’s value, so you shouldn’t count on appreciation right away or buy a house without a full down payment. Also keep in mind that the upgrades that you have had done in your house will not get you the added value. A home should be a shelter first and an investment a distant second.

How to tell when you’re ready to buy a house? You’re buying it as a home for you and your family. A house might turn out to be a good investment buy, for most of us, a house is a place to rest our head and see our children grow. It provides shelter to you and your family. You are much more like to be happy if you buy a house for the purpose of shelter and you stay in it at least five years.

You may be able to afford the house itself. But, houses can end up being more expensive. There are closing fees, monthly maintenance and your mortgage payments are very much like rent payments to the bank. When you buy a home, it is not yours until it is “Free & Clear” and the mortgage is paid in full to the lender. If you don’t pay, you don’t stay. Therefore, it is very important to know that you are very comfortable with the payments.

When you decide to buy a house the ideal way is to pay a full 20% down payment and to have cash on hand for closing costs. A down payment reduces interest expenses and protects home owners from dropping valuations.

You can get a reasonable mortgage rate in today’s market. Unfortunately, the ongoing mortgage crisis is due to the fact that “homeowners” were buying houses before they were ready. Many could not qualify with their credit scores and tax returns, but due to the flexible guidelines many buyers could easily qualify for a loan

with high LTV as much as 100% or 0 down payments. If your credit score is damaged or you are carrying other debts, you should take a couple of years to aggressively pay down your debts and make a habit of paying your bills on time.

Owning a home is an American dream, but this dream can quickly become a burden if you are trapped by debt or an aggressively rising interest rate.

Before starting the home buying process it is very important to go through your finances. Many disasters could be avoided if people have a ‘rainy day’ fund equal to 3-6 months of income. Home owners have to face all kinds of small to large disasters, so it’s best to be prepared.

Sharad Gupta’s life has been a musical journey with an uncommon rhythm. Hailing from the Totaram Sagarlal family, legendary jewelers

of Hyderabad, Sharad is a creative individual with a twist. His passion and career-calling has been music. At a very early age he chose to steer away from family business into a journey of soulful enrichment in music.

Child Prodigy

Sharad’s journey into music began at the age of 5 when he started mimicking the notes of musical instruments to entertain his

parents and other members of his extended family. Noticing his distinctive talent his parents decided to get him formally trained in music and thus he started formal training under local music teachers. He was only 7 then. Since then, he has progressed from being an amateur singer who entertained family and friends into a thorough professional Bhajan, Gazal and light music artist.

“Music has been my passion, my soul mate and best friend right from childhood. Getting trained in the nuances of music, vocal modulations and seamless singing has been the greatest learning in my life,” says the soft spoken Sharad.

Fortuitous meeting

Sharad’s first major break came in 1998 w h e n he met Anup Jalota at a

family function. Impressed by Sharad’s excellent rendition of Bhajans, the

Ghazal maestro made a comment which changed

his life for ever. “You have a distinctive voice which is unlike

other popular singers. You must train and try

to become a play back singer,” said Anup Jalota and invited him to come to Mumbai for intensive training.

Sharad needed no further coercion, he just packed his bags and moved to Mumbai with a firm goal of learning and discovering his true potential. “I trained under two very illustrious teachers in Mumbai: Ajay Pohankarji and Paresh Janaji. These two Gurus helped me blossom into a fine vocalist,” admits Sharad.

Metamorphosis into a Classical Singer

In the year 2000 Sharad was approached by a recording company to make a Bhajan album: “Hey Prabhu Mere”. The album catapulted

Sharad to fame among music lovers, especially those who love Ghazal and Bhajans. His orthodox Hindu upbringing and training in pure classical music made Sharad stick to the genres of Bhajans, Ghazals, and soft melodies.

Since then it has been years of strict practice and performances. Over the years, he has blossomed into a seasoned musician with remarkable mastery over his distinct vocal ability. Practice makes a man perfect and Sharad is a fine example to illustrate this saying. Since he started training in 1998, Sharad has been spending a minimum of 3-4 hours daily on practice and sometimes even 6-7 hours in riyaz.

Sharad’s popularity is evidenced from the fact that in the past 7 years alone he has performed in more than 500 concerts in more than 25 in countries including the US, the UK and Singapore.

He has also released 18 albums which have all been sold out.

Success has not gotten into Sharad’s head, he still remains the same soft-spoken, humble individual. “My aim is to touch people’s hearts through my music. I would like be remembered as a singer who made people forget their troubles. I will continue performing live and entertaining music lovers,” concludes Sharad.

Salaam Namaste is with you.

BOOKS with Srinidhi R

The City of Women by Ruth Landes; University of New Mexico Press; Price: $21.95; 248 pp.

This book deals with a unique and rather intriguing subject: Candomble culture

and religious practices in Bahia, Brazil. The book starts off with an introduction by noted anthropologist Sally Cole and chronicles Landes’ life in Brazil as she interacts and studies the systems, culture, religious practices and traditions of Afro-Brazilian people. Thus this book becomes a work of memory rather than an ongoing commentary. Though work of memory the descriptions are graphic and succeed in presenting a rather vivid picture of life in Bahia.

As one reads through the book the fact that several of tribal traditions originating from Africa have been incorporated into Catholic Christianity. This is a strikingly similar in India wherein neo-converts stick to their ritualistic practices of their original religion and center it around Jesus Christ. The author faces up to the conflict between the old and new ideas, as well as, ancient and modern traditions in her interactions with Martiniano, the magician/ sorcerer who had been educated in the cult arts in Africa. This, I feel, is pretty much akin to the respect accorded to Islamic mullah’s who have traveled to Mecca.

Martiniano’s raves and rants about younger men not being interested in learning his craft and younger women who still had “hot blood” becoming priestesses and dancing to attract men display a conflict which is often faced in changing societies/ cultures. In this case Martiniano is a Catholic practicing Christianity in African style, but with advent of modernity things are changing.

Surprisingly the Afro-Brazilian society in Bahia is Matrilineal and acceptable of homosexual men in the role of women. Both in society as well as in religion women dominated the society in Bahia according to Landes. This doesn’t mean men are not necessary, they are indeed needed to support and protect, but in terms of finances, i n h e r i t a n c e , property rights women have the decision making authority.

Landes describes the

phenomenon of women going into a trance where perfectly normal people start behaving like as if they were possessed during a form of ritual worship when the spirit/ god invoked into these women. Visitors and common people pray to them as if they were god and seek favors/ blessings, ask questions about future, etc. Further in the book Landes describes a startling fact. Jesus Christ in Catholic life is considered the incarnation of Oxala, a African god.

One of the people Landes meets during the course of her research, Amor is an educated doctor, but he is also closely attached to the temple. His wife is one of the priestesses who dances and gets possessed. Landes sensitively explains Amor’s resentment towards his wife’s dancing at the temples. This explains an intercultural shift of an individual’s attitudes and beliefs. While most African people of Bahia found it a matter of pride and favor from gods if their women were to become priests, Amor didn’t like his wife to dance in public places where she could be stared at by men. Especially considering the fact that she dressed gorgeously and would be away from him for days in trance and unaware of what is happening to her

Amor’s confusion and frustration as he travels through a shift in his value systems after becoming educated and entering the upper class world of the Euro-Brazilians is well explained. While the entire community trusted temples and let the women stay there till their trance wears off, Amor was doubtful of what happens in the temple.

But Amor seems to be in a state of confusion. On the one hand he can’t tear himself from the temple and drumming and on the other hand he wants to stop his wife and children from getting involved. There is a certain duality of thought in this. He is happy and proud to be a source of information to his colleagues at the university. His confusion sent him on bouts of rage and he dies soon after. This shows how religion and conflict can affect an individual, how much ever educated and liberated he/ she may be.

Summing up, The City of Women is a must read for people interested in Afro-Brazilian cultures, particularly Candomble. For others it would be an educative treatise about another facet of the world’s cultures.

BOOKS with Srinidhi R

Useful Travel Survival GuideThe Rough Guide to Travel Survival by Doug Lansky; Rough Guides; $10.39; 224 pp.

The Rough Guide to Travel Survival is the essential field manual for every adventurous

traveler, or those that just want to feel better prepared while on a journey. The easy-to-read book is well organized into chapters each covering various aspects of travel such as: preparation, basic travel, survival strategies, environment-specific situations (arctic and mountain, sea, political hotspots, natural disaster, desert, jungle). The pocket sized concise volume has easy-to-follow diagrams throughout.

Written by seasoned travel author, Doug Lansky, the book is full of simple, practical advice which will help you to deal with various tough situations during your sojourn. These tips range from helping you survive in a wide array of potentially dangerous situations (from surviving an avalanche to navigating through the sultry deserts to coping with an ambush or a hostage situation). My favorite parts of the book however, are the comprehensive appendices packed with survival instructions. From basic first aid to making a fire to emergency contact numbers in various countries of the world to basic conversational phrases in six languages, the book has valuable information.

The author Doug Lansky comes with vast experience and an impressive resume of having had published travel columns in over 40 newspapers, including: The Denver Post, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Detroit Free Press, etc. His books First-Time Around the World and First-Time Europe, have won numerous awards.

Under the section Finding Food – Insects Lansky writes: “Bugs don’t look nice to eat, but they’re a survivalist’s most reliable energy source (insects are 65-80 percent protein, compared to the 20 percent in beef). There are 1462 recorded species of edible insects; when choosing, avoid caterpillars and spiders as well as all insects that are hairy, brightly colored or have a pungent odor.”

Human beings are natural survivors and have intrinsic skills which are rarely put to test. These abilities are often hidden and people tend to forget that they have them. This book illustrates few simple guidelines that will help you greatly increase the odds of making the right decision at the right time. The Rough Guide to Travel Survival gives you that guidance, and loads of useful advice about how to be safe and remain healthy.

Lansky has travelled the world for the past decade and has learnt from experience how to stay well in all climates from the Arctic to the Zambezi. This volume is the result of his learning and experience through the years of his nomadic trysts. “Whether you’re visiting a politically unstable country, hiking in a remote region, or just find yourself in an unexpectedly dire situation in the course of regular travels, knowing how best to react can make the difference between life and death” says Lansky.

“Personally, I always try to avoid unnecessary risks. But the ones I haven’t avoided have included a bus accident in Namibia, a close call with a machete in Colombia, and being run over by a car in Thailand. All of which, frankly, could happen to anyone, almost anywhere. And I’ve had my share of bugs, too. Both medical and of the edible insect variety – very high in nutrients if you know which ones to go for,” adds Lansky.

Personally speaking, the most interesting part of the book has been the dramatic accounts of adventures that went wrong and how the people involved survived — in most cases — against great odds. Survival stories of people living through a mountain plane crash, being lost in the Sahara, capsizing on a remote Amazon tributary, and being shipwrecked.

That is not all, it also contains tips from some of the world’s top survival experts including Robert Young Pelton, author of The World’s Most Dangerous Places, Paul Rees of Centurion Risk Assessment, who trains BBC, AP and Reuters journalists in danger zones, and Dr David Johnson, associate director, Wilderness Medical.

In short the Rough Guide to Travel Survival covers everything

related to travel from

basic preparation, to what to do if things go badly wrong.

How FAIR is the idea of BEAUTY?

SOUTH ASIAN FACES

The myth of beauty is so much entrenched in our consciousness, it is unfortunately often considered as part of our culture: Fairness is beauty and a lighter complexion is your ticket to getting ahead in life, landing the man of oyour dreams and the job you’ve always desired. Dilshad Dayani attempts to track how this over the top obsession with light skin is instilled among people of the South Asian community.

Ourculture attaches a certainprestigetowhiteness, asthoughitpossessesamagical power to swing open doors

for you and instantly make life better. Whatdoyou thinkasyouwalkdown thememorylane?Haveyoubeenthevictimoranyofyourfriendsorrelativesyouknowhavesharedtheirstoryofbeingpressuredtobefairandlovely?

Some sociologists speculate that ourcolonizers’ complexions have become ourstandards for beauty. Othersblame South

PROFILE

Entertainment runs in Taher Ali’s blood. His father was a major film producer for Bollywood films and concerts in the early 1950s. He was the exclusive film distributor for South India,

with a base in Hyderabad. Thus, Ali grew up managing and marketing the business for his Dad, and in the process developed

a finely-tined sense to recognize the best, and what will appeal to the general public. “India has such a wide spectrum of people from different ethnic corners and s o c i o - e c o n o m i c backgrounds”, Ali explains. “Distributing films helped me

understand what it takes to appeal to ALL people, not just a particular group.”

On the technical side of the business, Taher pays attention to every detail, making his events a sight to see. He pays close attention to all details of the production, from sound system layouts, stage presentation, the lighting, and all those intangible elements that make an event a ‘once in a lifetime experience’ for a patron. Ali formed ‘Focus Events’ in 1990 with the express interest of representing desi entertainment and media in the DFW metroplex, something which was severely lacking at the time. Through his work in Focus Entertainment, Ali was solely instrumental in luring megastars to the metroplex, including Aamir Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Anil Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Preity Zinta, Rani Mukherji, Aishwarya

Rai,Sanjay Dutt, Sushmita Sen, Karisma Kapoor, Gracy Singh, Arjun Rampal, and Priyanka Chopra. “It was difficult trying to attract film stars to Dallas. They always want to go to more prominent markets, like New York or Los Angeles. Persuading them to fly 6 hours south to Texas was a challenge!” he recalls jovially.

In a meeting of two titans, Ali pooled Focus Entertainment resources to Rhythm Event Management, the uber-successful event management firm managed by Everest Heights, the largest South Asian Corporation in the metroplex. In addition to having built-in ties to

such marketing powers as Radio Salaam Namaste 104.9 (the largest desi listenership in the United States), Everest Movies, and Salaam Namaste Magazine, the revamped Rhythm Event Management, featuring Taher Ali at the helm, promises to become a force to be reckoned with in DFW. “I have always wanted to team up with a fresh, young team,” proclaims Taher, “I promise our New Years party will be the biggest bonanza that Dallas — wait, the United States — has ever seen!”

BEAUTY

Dressing up for an evening out is not hard. Irresistible party clothes complemented by simple make-up and hassle free hair is all you need to create an evening look. Salaam Namaste advises you to wear make-up that looks simple, feminine and, most importantly, realistic.

SEXY in 60 MINUTES!

Styling Your Hair

Always complete make up first and then move on to the hairstyle. Your hair should have texture and shine without

stiffness for an easy and sexy style. Avoid using aerosol hairspray. If you have long and straight hair it is best to leave it open. Wash your hair with a shampoo first and then use a good conditioner. Keep it for ten minutes and then wash it with cold water. Avoid back combing for long hair. When dry, brush it well in an outward direction using a soft brush.

We can try different hairstyles if you have short or mid length hair. Do not wash your hair on the same day you want to style it. For a sleeker look, toss your hair completely back and make a neat low bun or tie a top knot. To create side strings take a few strands of hair from each side, wet them and pin them up. After ten minutes, carefully remove the pins and let the strands loose. To make it last longer, use little non-aerosol hairspray. Add volume to your hair by using diffusers and drying systems that include dryers and rollers. Hair ornaments and accessories can also be included to create a different look. Pamper yourself with them and make a pretty statement.

Make a fresh start

Wash your face either by using a face wash or with distilled water. Dab the face with tissue paper. Cover your face with

a little moisturizer and wait for it to dry. Apply a concealer to hide spots and dark circles. Dot thin coats of concealer in the inner circle under the eye, around the lips and other dark skin area. The concealer should be one or two coats lighter than the foundation, otherwise the face will look heavy. And make sure you apply it only where needed.

Choose a foundation to match your skin tone. Using the right foundation makes your skin look flawless and smooth. To achieve p e r f e c t

precision one must blend well. Use an oil-free foundation, starting at the center of your face, and blend it carefully with a slightly damp sponge all over the face. Be more thorough on the chin, around the nostrils and under the jawline. Foundation blended well on the jawline avoids demarcation lines. Set it with translucent or compact powder for a matte and refined finish.

Eye shadows

Accentuate eyes, making them look bigger and brighter. Use an eye shadow

that compliments the color of your eyes. Apply eye shadow right over the eyelid. Draw a thin line of eyeliner on your upper lid, close to the lashes. Use a soft tipped eye pencil over the line for a smudgy effect. Apply mascara in an upward and outward manner. To make your lashes look thicker, powder them before the first layer of mascara is dry. Then apply the second coat. For defined lashes use a lash comb and curler.

Even the prettiest of make-up looks unfinished without blusher. It adds life and glow to every skin color. Use powder blush or tinting powder. Dust the blusher right on the apple of your checks with a large brush patches, then blend it outwards with a big brush in semi-circular motions. Do not go close to the nose.

To give your lips a luscious look first draw the outline of your lips with a lip pencil. Line them with a neutral color. Blend inward

to prevent the lipstick from bleeding. Use a lip brush to apply the lipstick. Powder your lips after the first coat to prevent it from fading. Apply a second coat of lipstick. And finally use lip gloss on the center of your lower lip to give that sexy pout look.

Now on to your lips

MEN’S FASHION with Ali FazalRunway Round-up

The Spring/Summer 2009 collections, presented in New York Fashion Week 2008, introduced a lot of new trends for men. As witnessed by exclusive runway images from the Marc by Marc Jacobs show, silhouettes for men

will be drastically different come spring. A lot of Caprizios, short pants that hit about 2 inches below the knee, were present in muted colors like Grey and Beige. Another new trend for men is Messenger Pants, which hit right above the ankle-line.

Bright accessories are the watchword this season, especially in footwear. Bright reds, yellows, and greens were especially present in shoes. Chunky arm accessories (such as a wristwatch AND a cuff together on the wrist) also seem to be coming back into fashion.

Metallic embellishment is still ever-present this season, a trend that carried over from last year. Sequins and studs, in bronze, gold and silver were particularly popular.

Winter can bring about much extra expenditure with the holiday season right around the corner. Here are some

tips on where to shop for this season’s trendiest clothes and accessories — all while staying in your budget.

1. Old Navy—While their major pieces might be totally last season, Old Navy always manages to mix in fresh accessory pieces. When looking for scarves, gloves, and earmuffs that look ripped from the runway, Old Navy is the place to be. Generally, accessories range from about $5-$15, so even if they wear out quickly, it’s no big deal.

2. The Lucky Outlet—For designer jeans at pedestrian prices, the Lucky Jeans outlet (in Grapevine Mills Mall in Irving, TX) is an absolute

godsend. Whenever Lucky Jeans don’t sell at pricey retailers like Saks and Nordstrom, they send them over to the Lucky outlet, where most jeans range from $40-$60. Even though most of the selection is one or two seasons old, it still looks fresh and current, since men’s jeans usually experience only miniscule changes from season to season.

3. Aldo—For accessories that are well-made and trendy, look no further than Aldo. The watches, rings, necklaces, cuffs, and sunglasses are to die for,

and most are under $20. Since accessories usually are only trendy for a season or two, splurging at designer boutiques is unnecessary. Metallic crosses are really hot this season, so spring for two!

Top 3 places to save money on your winter wardrobe
