Introduction This is the 2010 Annual Report for the Centre for Science,

Mathematics and Technology Education. In this report, I highlight the Centre’s ongoing accomplishments and goals for 2010. This year we collectively produced over 185 publications and presentations, and we currently hold over $16.8 million in research funding. As a Centre, we continue to make an impact on mathematics, science and technology-related education research and practice, in and outside of schools. Within OISE, we strive for excellence in our contributions to initial teacher education and to graduate education, and we continue to foster connections to SMT educators across the university.

As a research centre located within the department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning, we organize a variety of activities designed to support our instructors and students, in both teaching and research. Our brown bag, seminars, and newsletter are a way of building and maintaining our small community. Furthermore, as the home of a journal with international reach, we strive to continue to broaden our perspectives and the reach of our work.

None of our work would be possible without the expertise and assistance of our administrative assistant, Marko Pandza, and I extend my thanks to him for all that he has done this year.

    SMT Centre: Scholarship

& Research Activities Canadian Journal of Science, Mathematics, and Technology

Education (CJSMTE) CJSMTE, established in 2000, is Canada’s first academic journal in this field. It was originally co-

edited by Derek Hodson and Gila Hanna, with an editorial board of 45 internationally prominent educators and a rigorous review policy. Published quarterly, it includes articles in English and in French. Now in its eighth year and edited by Professor John Wallace, this journal has generated great enthusiasm amongst Canadian and international scholars. The journal provides an international forum for the publication of original articles written in a variety of styles, including research investigations using experimental, qualitative, ethnographic, historical, philosophical, or case study approaches; critical reviews of the literature; policy perspectives and position papers; curriculum arguments; and discussion of issues in teacher education.

Research Seminar Series The Centre sponsors a seminar series that brings together faculty, graduate students, visiting

scholars and practitioners from the field of science, mathematics and technology education to present their research, as well as highlight current trends in the field. This engaging series contributes greatly to the vibrancy of the Centre. Some notable recent seminar topics include:

“The High School-University Transition in Chemistry” Professor David C. Stone (Lecturer, Dept. of Chemistry, University of Toronto)

“The Shadow Curriculum: Using and Generalizing Students’ Interest in Science” Dr. Ayelet Baram-Tsabari (Technion – Israel Institute of Technology) “European Programs Fostering Mathematical and Scientific Literacy” Professor Martin Lindner (University of Kiel) “Native Environmental Science: An Anishnabe Perspective” Assistant Professor Deb McGregor (Geography and Aboriginal Studies, University of Toronto)

    Brown Bag Discussion Series

The SMT Centre, in addition to the research seminar series, hosts a series of regular, informal noon hour discussions for faculty and students. The brown-bag series covers a wide range of topics in science, mathematics and technology education. Speakers generally include graduate students and faculty within the Centre. Preservice students science, mathematics and technology education are also invited to the brown-bag (and research seminars). Topics are related to educational theory, research projects, teaching strategies, research proposals, etc. Presentations and discussions are informal and meant to encourage debate and dialogue on the given topic. The purpose of the series is to promote community within the Centre and aid in the academic growth of both faculty and graduate students. Some notable Brown Bag seminar topics within the past year include:

“Exploring Uncharted Territory: Visitor Meaning Making at Body Worlds” “Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge Framework for Mathematics Teachers” “New Designs for Addressing the Divergence Problem in Threaded Online Discussions” “The Tyranny of Inquiry Based Learning”

    SMT Newsletter

Twice a year, the Centre publishes a newsletter that highlights faculty and graduate students’ activities, research and development initiatives, conference presentations and publications. It is a forum for faculty and graduate students to communicate, share and disseminate their work within OISE and the larger U of T community. The newsletter is published in hard copy and also available electronically through our website. Marko Pandza, SMTs Administrative Assistant, compiles and edits the newsletter.
