My brother went to a private

school, and it was almost double

what I paid. SMSU is public, but

the educational quality makes it

feel like a private school.”

There are so many reasons you belong at SMSU. Our professors will ask you

about your dreams and care enough to help you pursue them. We’ll help you

become one of the many students who will develop their leadership skills.

We’ll make sure you’re comfortable by saving you a couch next to the fireplace.

And we’ll make sure your SMSU degree will take you anywhere you want to go!

You belong here because SMSU’s 3,000 students are active,

participating in over 100 clubs, organizations, and other

leadership activities; and because the ’Stangs (AKA the Mustangs)

rock! Our teams are putting Southwest on everyone’s map.

You want a comfortable fit with the college you choose. SMSU

provides that, but it also offers more. You’ll be challenged in ways

that make you sharper intellectually. When you graduate, you’ll

be better prepared for a career and confident in your abilities.

It won’t take you long to agree: SMSU is where you belong!

SMSU offers a broad-based curriculum with strong education, business,

and liberal arts programs. You can also choose unique majors like

Agronomy or Culinology® (culinary studies plus food science) or minors

like Hispanic Studies or Rural and Regional Studies. Did you know you

can wear flip-flops year-round on campus? (No kidding! Underground

walkways keep SMSU climate-controlled and connected 24/7/365.)

Minnesota State University,

founded in 1963, is a four-year public university

offering excellent career preparation and a high-

quality liberal arts education.

With our new facilities, there’s a sense

that we’re coming into our own. Visitors

to campus are pleasantly surprised.”

Southwest has been a perfect fit for me.

It’s an institution of opportunity.”

Face-lift, schmace-lift – we’re talking full-body makeover on the SMSU

campus. Construction and improvements totaling more than $100 million have been

completed over the past few years. Let us count the ways: a new student center, our

renovated library with a bird’s-eye view of campus, the new Regional Event Center, home

of the Mustang football and soccer teams, and an awesome new fitness facility. Relax in the

Alumni Plaza, an outdoor, green gathering place. Utilize our computer labs or jump on

our campus-wide wireless Internet. Then chill in the new and renovated residence halls

and apartments!

students are highly involved in co-curricular

activities. Our new Student Center is a busy gathering spot where many

of our clubs and organizations are based.

is on a

215-acre campus located in Marshall, Minnesota

(population 13,000), just blocks away from a

downtown with cozy cafés and shops.

A 22-acre site on the northwest corner

of campus offers a wooded nature

sanctuary.

We’re close enough to the Twin Cities, Sioux Falls,

St. Cloud, and Fargo for road trips and summer

internships, but far enough away to allow you to

remain focused on your studies.

Visualize a whole community in one expansive building,

with banners hanging from street lamps, a food court, a

convenience store, large comfy sofas, overstuffed chairs, and

even a TV lounge! Who wouldn’t want to hang here?

Learning and Living Communities are co-residential communities

that share an academic or a special interest – one part learning and three

parts fun. For example, students in the Culinology® House have in common

their interest in the art of cooking. Those in the TRiO and Academic Success

Community are first-generation college students. The Mustang Traditions

group energizes the student spirit club, Mustang Maniacs.

Res Halls rock! National

research shows that students who bunk on campus are

more satisfied with their education, more likely to

complete their degrees, more involved in campus

activities, and more likely to maintain higher GPAs!

Pita, pizza, or pomegranate? Take

your pick at the Food Court, Residential Dining, Java City,

and more. Meal plans are flexible to suit your needs.

I like living on campus even

though I’m from Marshall. I can

go home and do laundry and talk

to my parents, but I still have my

own choices to make.”

With a student-faculty ratio of

18:1 and small classes (average number: 21), you’ll

know your professors. When you need

recommendations for grad school or referrals for

jobs, you’ll have plenty of professors to ask!

Here’s a telling story about our faculty

from a student named Meagan: “I told the professor of my biomechanics class

that I wasn’t sure what to major in, but I knew what I wanted to do. He said,

‘Give me a couple of days and then come back,’ and so I did.”

“When I returned to his office,” Meagan continues, “he told me, ‘Here’s what you

could major in to achieve your goal.’ That kind of personal attention is how I know

I’m getting a quality education.”

You too will receive encouragement like this. And by the way, not a

single teaching assistant leads a class. You get the real deal at SMSU.

Page 7: SMSU Viewbook 2009

In the spring, you’ll attend a one-day registration to help

select your fall classes. In August during Mustang Gold Rush Days, you’ll make

friends instantly and experience college.

During your first semester, you’ll be assigned to an academic advisor. Once

you choose a major, you will be assigned to a faculty advisor who helps you

select courses and work toward a degree.

Faculty and advisors are not the only ones on your side at Southwest.

Staff members at the Academic Commons offer resources for improving

time management, note-taking, and study skills. The SMSU Writing

Center and Math Center provide assistance with assignments. Academic

and Diversity Resources staff helps students improve reading, reasoning,

and study skills. Who needs Facebook when you have friends like these!?

My professor’s knowledge of

economics just blew me away

and inspired me to want to

know an industry or subject

with that depth.” Career Services helps students from day onethrough graduation as they explore majors, research jobmarkets, write resumes, and prepare for interviews.

Ever heard a college student complain about the

difficulty of setting up a study-abroad semester for their junior

or senior year? We say: Why wait to travel until then?

I didn’t realize Southwest

offered so many travel

opportunities, clubs,

organizations, and

service projects.”

I took an 11-day trip to Belize.

I was nervous, but it was a learning

experience I will never forget.”

Our Global Studies Cluster courses are designed

for freshmen and sophomores, giving them the opportunity to

take small classes, study intriguing topics, and gain valuable skills

through focused study and research. You’ll take four courses

together – three that satisfy Liberal Arts Core (LAC) requirements,

plus a team-taught Seminar focusing on the location. Then…

travel time! The trip is usually two to three weeks in May.

Students who participate in the Global Studies Clusters develop

deep friendships. After all, when you have learned to pronounce

“Ou es les toilettes?” together, you’re bonded for life.

The World 13-credit England/France cluster:

•4 classes (3 credits each)

•Introduction to Literature

•Humanities

•Modern World

•French language class

•Global Studies Seminar

•2.5 weeks of travel (1 credit) in May to

England and France

The States Shorter trips in the States include

a 1-credit Boston and Concord trip focusing

on American Transcendentalists, with

travel during fall or spring break.

Traveling outside the U.S. for understanding

and knowledge only makes sense. What better way to go than with

25 other SMSU students plus several experienced faculty members?

And it’s all organized for you!

Page 9: SMSU Viewbook 2009

W W W . S M S U . E D U

Liberal Arts Core (LAC) courses provide students

with a solid foundation in key academic areas of reading comprehension, critical

thinking, reasoning, writing, and speaking. A comprehensive, diverse group of

classes focuses on these skills early in your college career.

You won’t believe the amazing

Undergraduate Research Conference that has become an annual

signature event at Southwest, giving students a chance to

showcase their research and other projects. With keynote

speakers, student presentations to large crowds of 300, and

research posters and student artwork displayed in every nook

and cranny – you’ll never see so many SMSU students dressed

up at once! This celebration of our students’ intellectual

achievements continues to grow every year.

In all classes, we emphasize experiential learning instead of memorization

and long periods of sitting in a seat. Don’t get us wrong – our professors

can lecture with the best – but when they do lecture, you’ll be inspired,

not bored.

Active learning includes projects like surveying Southwest students for a

Business Statistics class and comparing the results with students’ responses

from overseas. You can mix your own radio show for a Broadcasting class, or

assess regional water quality to create a presentation on rain gardens for

your Environmental Studies class.

I’ve meditated in the first ten minutes

of class and played African

instruments. I’ve been on the top of

the school looking through a telescope

at Venus. SMSU makes me want to

learn as much as I can.”

Over 45 undergraduate degrees

and a trio of master’s programs draw students

from all over the state, country, and world.

Commonly selected majors include

the arts, sciences, humanities, education, finance,

management, and justice administration.

Page 10: SMSU Viewbook 2009

You’ll flourish as an Honors student by studying with a

group of motivated, like-minded peers. In place of the Liberal Arts Core (LAC)

requirements, Honors students design their own course of study in the liberal arts.

Each student’s program must include three courses from a selected list of

Honors courses and a senior-level interdisciplinary seminar. Students may

also elect to enroll in an Honors project designed by the student and

his/her major advisor. All students are required to complete an hour-long

senior dialogue with selected faculty members.

I was impressed by the

Honors Program, which

allowed me to take

higher-level courses

during my first year at

Southwest.”

Prior to enrollment at SMSU, contact

Dr. Steve Kramer at [email protected] or call

507.537.7206 for Honors Program application materials.

Entering students are eligible if they have

a sound high school record and high ACT scores.

Students already enrolled at SMSU may apply if they

have earned a 3.3 GPA.

VARSITY ATHLETICSNCAA Division II, Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC)

3,689 fans attended Southwest’s NCAAmen’s basketball regional championship victory inMarch ’09!

SMSU athletic teams have had tremendous success

competing not only regionally, but on a national level as well. During the 2008-09

academic year, two Mustang teams won conference championships, while eight of

SMSU’s 11 athletic teams qualified for regional or national tournaments. Impressed?

SMSU student-athletes not only succeed on the field of play, but thrive off the

field as well. Mustang student-athletes compiled a cumulative 3.0 grade point

average during the academic year and also provided several community service

projects. Some of our athletes enjoy reading to local elementary students while

others volunteer to rake leaves for elderly citizens in the Marshall community.

The NCAA has also honored SMSU athletics the past two years, producing the

top civic engagement program in the NSIC. The annual Ag Bowl was created to

bring together agriculture, higher education and the community of southwest

Minnesota. SMSU is proud that it is located in southwest Minnesota, a region

where agriculture provides the foundation for the economy.

a great collegiate experience.”

SMSU offers many clubs

and organizations to give

students hands-on

involvement that broadens

their viewpoints, ideas,

and experiences.”

Need a life coach? Join the Society for

Leadership and Success! Students help each other identify

academic and life challenges, set goals, and achieve their dreams.

#2: there’s a big, intensively active community

on the SMSU campus. We’re talking over 100 clubs,

organizations, and leadership activities, people! Our

students know that when they get involved, they’re

happier (and tend to manage their time better, too). You’ll

make more friends, generate networking connections for a

lifetime, and develop your skills in people-reading,

pleading (fundraisers, you know?), and leading!

OUT AND ABOUT• Visit area parks for camping, hiking, & biking

• Check out the newly remodeled Marshall 6 Theatre

• Golf at seven courses within a half-hour of Marshall

...and many more!

There are two ways SMSU is

different than high school. #1: no offense, high school

teachers, but college classes at Southwest are more rigorous

across the board. You’re going to study harder – and work

smarter – than you ever have before.

* Southwest Minnesota State University reserves the right to make

changes in policies, requirements, fees, and programs at any time.

If and when such changes are made, SMSU will provide reasonable

notice to students and other individuals who may be affected.

Students and parents should anticipate additional costs per year

(personal expenses averaging $2,748, and books & supplies

approximately $1,000). These costs will be calculated into your

financial aid budget for purposes of determining aid.

SMSU offers its students banded tuition. This tuition allows

students to take between 12 and 18 credits per term and pay one

flat tuition rate. The Banded Tuition option fits well with the

philosophy of the University relative to offering students every

opportunity to finish their degree in a four-year period.

Second, banded tuition allows you to take 18 hours of credit at

a 12-hour price. Because of this great bargain, many students are able to add

an extra major, minor, or coaching certification. Third, A whopping 83% of

our students receive an average financial aid package of $9,000 in the form

of grants, scholarships, work study, and loans.

The SMSU Financial Aid

priority date is March 1st of each year.

WHERE ARE THEY NOWThe following graduate schools have recently

When I attended

many of my classes.

That’s what I do now

almost every day at

work. To tackle projects,

we get into groups of

92% of recent graduates reported beingemployed in their field; 6% were continuing their education.

SMSU alumni work in companies and

agencies like US Bancorp, The Schwan Food Company,

Best Buy Corporation, Daktronics, Mayo Clinic, and Cargill.

Several young SMSU alums sat around a conference table

on campus recently to reminisce. One said, “I was involved in SIFE (Students in

Free Enterprise) and it just made my whole college experience.” Another recalled,

“I loved the way the small classes helped me get to know my professors.”

These alums now work for several

corporations as a credit-risk assessor, a leadership developer, a

manager of talent and community development, and as a marketer.

They all agreed that SMSU prepared them to meet their employers’

needs for great verbal and communication skills, a strong work ethic,

teamwork skills, motivation and initiative, and interpersonal skills.

They all value their continuing friendships with other alums.

It might be the way the friendly admission staff makes them

comfortable.

For some, it’s the size

ABOUT SMSUSouthwest Minnesota State University, founded

in 1963, is a four-year public university offering

excellent career preparation and a high quality

liberal arts education. We prepare students for

successful lives, both personally and

professionally.

HISTORYSMSU is the newest of the four-year institutions

within the Minnesota State Colleges and

Universities system. Over 45 undergraduate

degrees and several master’s programs draw

students from all over the world.

LOCATIONWe’re located in Marshall, Minnesota, a friendly,

growing community of 13,000. Marshall, named

one of America’s best small cities, is an easy

drive from the Twin Cities, Sioux Falls, St.

Cloud, and Fargo.

FACULTYAbout 200 full and part-time faculty teach all

classes at Southwest – no teaching assistants.

The student-faculty ratio is 18:1. Seventy nine
