PASTOR'SnotebookNOTEBOOKPASTOR'S

Welcome…

To our new pastoral year, 2019–2020. Also, welcome to everyone who may be visiting with family and friends this holi-day weekend and have come to join us for Mass. It is a grace to have you with us. Know that you are always welcome at Saint Michael Parish.Thank you to everyone who helped support the parish through your stew-ardship efforts this past year. The sharing of your time through prayer, your talents through service to others and your treasure by giving of your financial resources has enabled us once again to serve our parish community, our local community, the archdiocese, as well as the Church far beyond our borders. As we prepare our annual report for the archdiocese, we will also prepare our annual report for the parish. We want to be accountable to one another, espe-cially in the areas of our ministries and our financial resources.Annual Catholic Appeal

My heartfelt gratitude to each and every one who has made a pledge to this year’s Annual Catholic Appeal. Not only have we reached our archdiocesan goal of $303,608, but we have pledges totaling $333,960 as of last report on June 26. Thank you so much for your generosity. We are well on our way to our stretch goal of $353,608. The play-ground equipment has already been

delivered to the Holy Spirit Center in Juarez, Mexico. If you have yet to make a pledge, please do so by going to our website or to the archdiocesan website where you can give online. It is very simple. Please know that every contribution is import-ant, no matter the amount. If you are unable to give financially, please take time and make a pledge of prayer. This is very important for the success of the ministries of the archdiocese. Thank you.Fr. Bill Treacy

What an honor it was for all of us priests to be with Fr. Treacy on June 19 as we celebrated his 100th birthday and 75th anniversary of ordination to the priest-hood. What an inspiration and model for those of us who seek to serve the Lord. I’m pleased to announce that Fr. Treacy will be with us on Sunday, July 21 at 11:30am Mass downtown. Fr. Treacy was pastor here at Saint Michael Parish in the early 70’s. He honored us with his presence at the last Faithraising Campaign celebration dinners. I have always found him a man of encourage-ment, prayer and insight. Please join us if you can for a simple reception after Mass to honor this incredible servant of God.Summer Alpha

Every Thursday evening beginning July 11 until September 19, we are hosting another Alpha course. Alpha is meant to be an “on-ramp” for people to begin

to explore the deeper questions and meaning of life and to introduce them to the sacred story of Jesus Christ and the Church.Alpha is designed for the non-be-liever, yet it has been a powerful tool of renewal of faith for those who already believe. I invite you to consider your par-ticipation in this summer Alpha course for your own growth in faith and a new experience of the Holy Spirit. I also ask you to pray about whom you can invite and accompany on this jour-ney. We all know folks—at home, at work, in our neighborhoods—who have no church home or seeming interest in faith. Sometimes it only takes a personal invitation to spark faith.Alpha consists of a simple meal and fellowship together, followed by a 30 minute video and, finally, the opportunity to share about the video presentation. It is a time of invitation to explore one’s questions in a non-threatening and accepting atmosphere. This is not a time of apologetics where we try to convince others or enter into debate. It is rather meant to be an encounter and an invi-tation that will hopefully lead others to Christ. If you need more information or are planning on coming, please contact Andrew Casad at the parish office. In Christ, through the intercession of Blessed Pier Giorgio, I love you.

CONFIRMATION PROGRAM CHANGESFor Pastoral Year 2020, our Confirmation Ministry welcomes all students in 9th through 12th grades who discern they are ready to pre-pare to receive the Sacrament of

Confirmation. This ministry invites parents to journey with their children toward the Sacrament. The confirmand’s commitment includes two evening gatherings per month from October to May. Parents are encouraged to participate in formational gatherings monthly as well. Please Note: Earlier this year, Archbishop Sartain affirmed that the age of reception for the Sacrament of Confirmation is to be lowered to the 7th grade (approximately 13 years of age) for all parishes in the Archdiocese by the year 2023. Saint Michael Parish will make this transition slowly. Here is our plan:Confirmation Preparation will be a one year process starting in 2019–2020. The prerequisite to beginning preparation is at least two years of prior faith formation (within the last 3 yrs), consistent Mass attendance and a letter of intent. Faith formation can be a church formation program or attendance at a Catholic school. We will be offering the Sacrament to the following age groups in the following years:Grades 9–12: 2019–20 Grades: 8–9: 2020–21 Grades 7–8: 2021–22 Grade 7: 2022–23Questions? EXODUS 90 IS STARTING SOON!Are you looking for more in life? Do you often find your-self bored, uninterested in life, consumed by technology, distracted? Exodus is an intense 90 day period of prayer, fraternity, and aestheticism. You and a group of like-minded brothers journey together through the book of Exodus, following Moses and the Israelites as they break their chains of slavery. Developed as a seminarian formation tool, Exodus 90 has gained rep-utation globally as a focused way to regain freedom in the lives of thousands of men. This past January, 16 men at SMP embarked on the parish's first Exodus 90, afterward sharing quotes like:

"I knew I needed something to break me out of feeling trapped in everyday life stress... I had no idea that this 90 days would so radically transform my life. My marriage re-awakened, my faith re-ignited, and I feel like I finally have such clarity on what God's been dreaming up for my life...and it's all so beautiful."

New fraternities are forming now. Join other men in the parish on this intense and intimate journey. Learn more at exodus90.com. To join a fraternity now, contact: Rex Yabut at [email protected] or Andrew Goldstein at [email protected].

SPSE COMMUNITY BBQ:Thank you for your prayers and support for our first neighborhood BBQ. We hosted 20 neighbors who have never attended a Saint Michael Parish event. Please pray for St. Paul Street Evangelization as we look to invite our neighbors to our campus through future events or street encounters. This event was small but effective because the neigh-borhood was invited and we were able to invite on an intimate level. We pray that

this is the beginning of a stronger bond between SMP and our surrounding neighbors and that they truly see the light of Christ in us. We pray that you take a step and say hello to your own neighbors, so that when there is an opportunity to invite, it will come naturally, and a relationship will already be built between you.SPSE is also back at Lake Fair. Come by and pray with us and see SPSE in action. We will be there July 17–July 21, 12–9pm. Please pray for our team—that the folks we pray over and encounter may come to know how much they are loved. For more information on St. Paul Street Evangelization, contact Brandon Jones at (360) 292-7108 or [email protected]

A NOTE OF THANKS

"Dear Fr. Jim, Bene, and Saint Michael parishioners,

"It warmed my heart to receive your letter announcing the gener-ous support that Saint Michael Parish will be giving to Senior Services to help us serve our poor and vulnerable seniors. Bless you all!

"We plan to use Saint Michael funds to support our greatest needs – helping to fund our Senior Nutrition and Meals on Wheels programs, helping homebound, isolated seniors and our Supportive Services program – helping our lowest income navigate the challenging system of finding resources. 80% of the calls for assistance are from seniors who are threatened with home-lessness or who are actually homeless. Our social work volunteers help them navigate, especially when they have no family to help. Thank you again for your care and support of our elders!"

LAUDATO SI:Pope Francis writes that the disappearance of an entire culture “can be just as serious, or even more serious, than the disap-pearance of a species of plant or animal.” We should strive to listen to indige-nous peoples, protect their lands and involve them in processes and decisions that affect them.
