SIKANISWENI HIGH SCHOOL LEARNER: THE FOUNDER OF SKIN CARE RANGE, NATURAL MEBy: Nompumelelo Gasa

THE Grade 11 learner at Sikanisweni High School in Ezingolweni, Snikiwe Xaba (16) is the founder of skin care range, Natural Me. After battling with skin problems in her early teens, she developed interest in skin care products and she discovered a gap in the market as she saw that it was very hard to find quality products at an affordable price. “I could not afford to buy skin products as they were expensive and my parents could not afford. I did an online research to learn more about natural ingredients that are good in treating pimples,” she said. Snikiwe started her skin care company in December 2017 after a long research about the industry and also finding the right manufacturing partner.

Both her parents have been unemployed her whole life and it has not been easy for the 16 year old girl. She started her journey long time ago selling sweets back in Primary School. She was inspired by her mother who raised her and her 5 siblings by selling everything she could sell to put food on the table.

Snikiwe’s teacher, Mr Sipho Dlamini, who is excited and impressed to have Snikiwe as her learner whom he described as an average pupil who works very hard in class. “She is the first learner to put our school and area on the map. What she has done will boost others self-esteem by showing them that you don’t have to be from a big city to make it happen in life,” Dlamini said.

Natural Me currently produces a facial range with 4 products (face wash, skin toner, day cream and night cream). These products help with pimples, dark marks, uneven skin tone and oily skin.

JAMES NXUMALO Agricultural High School secured a 3rd place, Qophindlela High School came 2nd and Amazulu High School took it home. A jaw dropping competition it was, as contenders from various schools and districts formed in teams of four, engaged in presenting book reviews. All team members participated effectively. Chief Director: Curriculum Development, Mr Mbongiseni Mazibuko unbolted this competition in a high note. “It has been intuitively known for many years that reading aloud to children promotes the love of reading. Studies show that reading for inclination makes a big difference to a learners academic performance,” said Mazibuko.

Ms Lindiwe Madumo from DBE said, “KZN is one of the leading provinces when it comes to people who lack reading interest. About 30% of its population are readers. I am happy to witness such a wonderful competition because it sends a good message to our learners that reading is cool.” The Izihlabathi Zolwandle Author and Editor, Mr Themba Qwabe, applauded this phenomenon. In his address he said, “Through hearing stories, children are exposed to a wide range of words. This helps them build to their own vocabulary and improve their understanding when they listen, which is vital as they start to read. It is imperative for them to understand how stories work in the language of their choice,” said QwabeREADERS CUP COMPETITION- READ TO LEAD!!!

SCHOOL LIBRARY EXCELLENCE AWARDS BRIDGING FOR LIFE

CERTIFICATION CEREMONY

By: Qinisile Mkhize

By: Mbali Zulu

HOW do we champion quality education? One way is having a viable library. One of the building blocks to learning is reading, speaking, writing, and counting. The library is the center where all this is nurtured. Most of our schools don’t have libraries, for some schools libraries are a luxury. You invoke creativity when you allow learners to access the library. We are here to say well done to all of you for your hard work and dedication. These encouraging words were shared by Mr Mbongiseni Mazibuko, Chief Director: Curriculum Development Programmes at the 2018 School Library Excellence Awards, held at Dokkies on October 16. In 2018, 40 schools participated in the School Library Excellent Awards (SLEA) program, twenty nine primary and eleven high schools. Amongst the criteria for adjudication in SLEA are, excellence in the relevance of the collection, excellence in the organization and management of the collection, professional development of the teacher-librarian to mention a few. The winning schools excelled in different areas of the assessment. School libraries fulfill various information needs of learners and educators within the parameters of curriculum development and enrichment as schools that have libraries perform better academically.

VALUED Citizen Initiative in collaboration with the Department of Education hosted a Certification Ceremony of Grade 12 learners from Groutville and Guzana High Schools. These are learners who have successfully completed the Bridging for Life programme, in the iLembe District. The ceremony took place in October 15 at Meander Manor Hotel, Ballito.

The main objective of the Bridging for Life Programme is to lay a solid foundation over two years and equip Grade 11 learners with life skills.

Institutional Development and Support DDG: Ms Judy Dlamini, addressed the audience. She said, this programme will help learners to perform optimally. “We have no doubt that these learners have been thoroughly prepared for a life beyond Grade 12. Thank you so much Valued Citizen Initiative for investing in education and skills development as this is the key to economic growth and development.” said the DDG.

According to the Founder, Ms Carole Ngono, in 2010 the Department of Higher Education and Training endorsed the Bridging for Life programme. “Today, out of 74 learners graduated, 15 girls learners have applied in tertiary institutions for engineering, 9 of them have already received letter of acceptance from the universities and others will be offered bursaries,” explained Carole.

Another grateful learner, Asanele Madukuzela, from Guzana High said they had a successful training with Valued Citizen Initiative.“Through this programme, I have learned to be responsible and to manage time, I have also learned to deal with my anger properly,” asserted Asanele.

This competitions creates a platform where schools display the talent of the learners.
