Mountain people have their own sense of time. I call it ‘Mountain Time’. People who are on this time come and go as they please and keep whatever hours that suit them. Make sure you keep all of the bevel

in contact with the strop when stropping. Just lay the blade

flat on the strop and exert a small amount of pressure on the knife so that you maintain the correct contact on the strop. When you

reach the end of the strop be sure you turn the blade so that the sharp edge comes up and away from the strop. I do not recommend picking the knife up. Just turn it over so that it is flat again and strop. Be sure to use a small amount of strop abrasive. Do not re-sharpen unless you nick, chip, break or have to re-shape the blade.

You should not breathe fumes from your burning. Use a fan to draw off the fumes. Blowing across your project will cool down your burning tip.

Clean carbon buildup from tips. See our cleaning pads on previous page. Sand lightly when cleaning tip.

Use low temperature settings. You can always darken but it will be a lot harder to lighten.

Pyrography is not a race. It takes time but the effort is worth it.

Smooth wood makes for better burning.

Gouges cut better cross grain. Try using a chip carving knife to do your stop cuts. It has the perfect shape. Try not to use the point of your knife to carve or pick at the carving with your knife.
