Interventions, workshops and games.
Where did we engage young people?
• At the network of Universal Connections Youth Centres
• Schools• Children's Houses• Sports centres• On the street• Community events
How did we engage?
• Workshops: Focused work delivered to groups• Interventions: For individuals or groups that
require it• Games: Added to existing service to bring the
message more subtly to more chaotic groups• Policy: Young people with a voice in their
services being engaged in a mature way on Smoke Free Policies.
Workshops
• Provide accurate information on the dangers of smoking
• Challenge common smoking myths• Develop skills and techniques in resisting peer
pressure• Signpost young people to relevant services• Prepare young people for brief intervention
Interventions
• To get young people to attempt to stop• To move young people from “not thinking
about stopping” to I plan to give up soon• To help young people to analyse their own
behaviour• To prepare young people for change• To develop self awareness in vulnerable young
people
Games
• Engage with young people in a fun way• Deliver information in ways that suits all
learners• Provoke debate on Smoke Free Issues• To try acting and thinking differently in a safe
abstract way• Preparing young people for workshops and
interventions
Policy
• Make Smoke Free Policy relevant and accessible for young people
• Challenge the idea of Smoking Policy being about restricting rights
• Ensuring that young people who contribute to the leadership of our service are aware of the importance and relevance of Smoke Free work

• Information to help young people choose wisely
