SCHOOL HATS A reminder, that all students must wear an appropriate school hat each day. Coloured and brand name hats are not part of the approved school uniform and should not be worn. Summer is on the way and sun protection is an important part of student wellbeing. KINDERGARTEN TRANSITION We are looking forward to welcoming our 2020 Kindergarten students to Smithfield West when our transition program commences on Tuesday, 5 November from 9:00am. Our newest students will join other 2020 Kindergarten children and enjoy a morning of activities. Parents are invited for information sessions about transitioning to school, how to assist their child’s learning and school routines. NEW ROOFING Work on Blocks 2, 5, 6 and C is nearly complete. These blocks have received new roofing, gutters and downpipes. Hopefully, next time it rains there will be no more leaks! END OF YEAR PICNIC DAY Picnic Day has been set down for Friday, 13 December (Week 9). Planning is well underway and notes will be sent home later this term. Students from all classes will be travelling by bus on the day to a number of venues and the average cost will be around $20.00 per student. KN ASSEMBLY CHANGE OF DATE To improve technology in the hall, I have arranged for a new and upgraded projector to be installed. Unfortunately, the installation date clashes with KN hosting their first K-6 assembly. Therefore, we have moved KN’s assembly to Wednesday 13 November (Week 5) at 9.10am and incorporated it with Grandparent’s Morning. PRESCRIBED MEDICATION AT SCHOOL The Department of Education has strict guidelines regarding the dispensing of medication at school. If your child requires medication at school, it must be taken to the front office accompanied by written authority for the medication to be administered by the school. Please note that medication not prescribed by a doctor cannot be administered unless it is accompanied by a letter from the doctor.

NUT ALERT: REDUCE THE RISK! We have a number of students at Smithfield West with a severe life-threatening allergy (anaphylaxis) to nuts, peanuts and products containing nuts or peanuts. Exposure to even a tiny amount such as peanut butter on the hands of a another person who then touches a door handle, water tap, bubbler or other article that is then touched by a student severely allergic to peanuts could be enough to cause a severe reaction. Without immediate emergency medical assistance this reaction is potentially life threatening. The school has established emergency plans for the students. Part of this plan is to establish a safe environment for all students. Therefore, I am requesting that parents avoid including nuts, peanuts and products containing nuts or peanuts in lunches or snacks. Some examples of highly allergic foods are peanut butter sandwiches and muesli bars. Thank you for your assistance with this important matter. WHY DO CHILDREN NEED TO DEVELOP GOOD READING HABITS? Reading is one of the most important skills a child needs to learn to succeed in life. Children are active, curious and eager to learn. Reading books can help them gain knowledge, develop thinking skills, develop positive values and attitudes. Children don’t just learn to read at school, in fact, the home is the first learning environment for young children and parents are their first teachers. It is the best place to begin good reading habits. In this respect, school and home are equally important in teaching children to read. The following will help you teach your child good reading habits and motivate them to read:

• Have a quiet place where you can sit and enjoy reading together. The experts agree on one thing: reading is what makes better readers.

• Take time to talk about the books you read with your children. This helps to establish the concept that reading generates ideas, opinions and questions.

• Write your grocery list clearly and ask your children to help you read it in the store. This helps build sight vocabulary based on things that are familiar. Stephen Gray Principal KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENTS 2020 It has come to that time of the year again where we are enrolling students for Kindergarten 2020. If you, a friend or neighbour have a child who is turning 5 before 1 August 2020 then they are eligible to begin school next year. Please fill out an enrolment form from the office.

GRANDPARENT’S MORNING – ADVANCE NOTICE On Wednesday 13 November we will be celebrating Grandparent's Morning. We are inviting the grandparents and great-grandparents of our students to come to school from 9.10am - 11.20am. The morning will be a celebration of the special role grandparents play in the lives of our students. The morning will begin with an assembly in the hall which will be led by KN and our Student Leaders and will include items of entertainment. This will be followed by an opportunity for visitors to see all our students at work in their classrooms. At 10.30am, a Devonshire morning tea will be served giving our visitors an opportunity to interact with each other and some of our school staff. Where access to classrooms may be a concern, we will make alternative arrangements for students to spend time with their visitors in other locations and share their work. We look forward to welcoming as many grandparents and great-grandparents as possible. Please notify us of the names of grandparents/great-grandparents attending on the note which will be sent home NEXT WEEK with the eldest child in each family. These need to be returned by Friday 8 November to class teachers for catering purposes and organisation of class activities. We look forward to sharing this morning with these special people in our student’s lives. S. Rowlings ASSEMBLY AWARD RECIPIENTS
