DONNYBROOK REPORT This is a very sad beginning to the year with the passing of our dear friend Harry Rofe, on the 1st of February 2014.

Harry was a Coordinator after joining the Donnybrook Day Club in 2001. When John Rowe became Coordinator Harry was a volunteer for many years. We always enjoyed Harry’s music played each Wednesday to greet us as we entered the room.

Harry was a Member of F.W.M.D.C. and Sub-Branch Treasurer for some time. A true gentleman, we will miss his smile and dry jokes. To his family our sincere condolences. RIP

Welcome back to Members and Families. Sorry I missed the 1st journal for 2014. I will try to catch up with the news. Our Xmas Party was a great success with the office girls and Mr and Mrs Newall presenting the Volunteers with well earned certificates. The entertainer was Ian Blakeley with plenty of singing. Eunice dressed as Santa Clause and Stan the bus driver did some fancy dancing, making our day. Decorations were supplied by Ann and Diane. The Christmas hamper was donated by Gordon Stevens, and was won by Joan, Phyllis Farrawell and Pat Franklin.

5th February was the day we returned to Donnybrook Club so Australia Day was celebrated.

22nd January, The Annual Volunteers luncheon was held at the Merrylands Bowling Club with 9 Members attending- Enjoyed by all.

January Birthday’s were: Eunice Lusk, Ray Pierce, Diane Brown and a special 80th for Dawn Spagetta. Carmel Portelli’s Birthday was February and Ann White’s is in March.April Birthday’s are: Marie McDonald, Jean Keith, Joan Scotti, Victor Morris and our newMember Joan Dau. We hope you will enjoy your time with us Joan.

Vicki Morris has kindly offered to make a cake each month for the Birthdays. Thank you Vicki. 26th February - Lunch in the Bistro. 2nd April a Barbecue has been booked as this is good for the Members to relax and have a walk in fresh air and see nature. The special Luncheon with entertainer has been booked for the 32nd Donnybrook Birthday in March. I will be on holidays in March so will miss out on the Birthday party, so enjoy yourselves whatever you do.

Keep smilingJean Keith

FISHING REPORT

The Australia Day Long Weekend saw the Fisho’s travel up north to Greenmans Valley Caravan Park to do a spot of fishing in the Hawkesbury River system. This is a camping weekend so wet weather is always a concern. Rain showers came through on the Friday evening and made things a touch damp, but held off for the rest of the weekend. Bob Hunter again had troubles fitting his camp stretcher inside his tent. That’s the third time Bob. Guy Clarke bought a great mud crab back to camp Friday evening which was cooked there and then. John and Sue Brooks managed to catch a couple Bream and Flathead whilst anchored up at Flint and Steel on the Saturday morning, and returned Sunday to catch a couple more Flathead from the same area. Sam Axiak also caught a Flathead on the Sunday up the river. Jaime Nelson caught a couple of beaut Dusky Flathead up the Cowan Creek arm with Dennis Russell finding one as well. No other fish were weighed in. The weekend was won by John Brooks with Sue Brooks runner up.

The third event was held at Greenwell Point 14-16 February 2014. Conditions both days were forecast to be lumpy. With a brisk north easterly of 15-20 knots, a big easterly swell, topped off with some decent rain showers, all boats were confined to the Flathead grounds off Seven Mile Beach. Some great fish were caught around the “tree mark” north of the surf shed including a 1.45kg Flathead caught by Steve Noack. Bag limits of flathead were caught by Jaime and Selai Nelson before Jaime managed to find Roman and escort him back to the secret spot. Steve Noack also managed to bag out on the Saturday. Selai and Steve also managed to bag out again on the Sunday morning. The crew on Cool Cat ventured south down to Beecroft on the Sunday morning and returned with Morwong, Snapper and Pigfish. On a social note, Paul Attard organised a beaut belated Birthday cake (cooked by the chef at the Greenwell Point Hotel) for our President Ellis Noack who turned seventy something the previous Friday. The weekend was won by Steve Noack with Selai Nelson runner up.

The Annual Camp Quality weekend was held at Greenwell Point on weekend 8-9 March 2014. This weekend always has a great roll up with around 50 family members and carers attending. A hearty breakfast was cooked up on the Saturday morning for all, and then off to the high seas. Well it was a bit choppy with a brisk north easterly on a 1.5 meter swell. At this point in time, big thanks to the members of the Greenwell Point Fishing Club, the Shoalhaven Marine Rescue Association and to the members of the Smithfield Fisho’s for making their boats available to take the Camp Quality members fishing. The fishing was hard initially with minor catches of Flathead being bought in only. Some boats went north, others south, but apart from a few sick souls, most had a good time. A sausage sizzle was cooked up for lunch and then either tie dying or fishing was back on the agenda. More Flathead caught in the afternoon and then cleaned up ready for dinner. The chefs at

the Greenwell Point Hotel cooked up a great roast followed by a multilayer sponge cake for desert. Sunday morning and most were ready to go fishing again. The conditions were much improved but the fishing was still hard. Hippos boat bought back a Snapper, a Morwong, with a few Flathead as well. All boats were back in by 11.00am and a beaut sausage sizzle followed. Trophies were awarded to the leading male and female fisher-persons from Camp Quality, with a few speeches made afterwards to conclude the weekend. The Fisho’s would like to thank all sponsors, supporters and helping hands of this fantastic annual event, with special mention to the Smithfield RSL Club for your very generous donation. It is with sincere regret that we advise of the recent passing of Jimmy Morris.

Even though Jim lived in Port Macquarie, he played in the annual Smithfield v Port Macquarie competition for over 30 years and subsequently all Smithfield golf members got to know and respect him.

Jimmy will be missed but not forgotten.

CRICKETREPORT At the time of printing there is one week left in the senior competition with Second grade running 3rd, Third grade 4th, Fourth Grade 2nd. Fifth grade the only side not in contention for the finals. The junior sides have completed their season with the Under 10’s and Under 14’s both missing the finals although both sides were very competitive during the year.

Inter-Club ReportsSUB BRANCH – PRESIDENT’S REPORTThis is my final report as President of your Sub Branch; however I will continue to hold office as a Trustee of Sub Branch property. The Sub Branch Annual General Meeting and Election of Officers and Committee of Management was held on 12 March 2014, the results of the Election was as follows:-

President Mr Bill Cruwys (Unopposed)Snr Vice President Mr John RoweVice President Mr Ricky StubbsHon Secretary Mr Douglas ClarkeHon Treasurer Mr Alex Mooney (Unopposed)(Committee: B.Helson, V.Kojevnikoff, F.Matthews, M.Oddy, D.Rooke and J.Webb)

This new Committee will hold their positions for the next three (3) years. I wish them well and I hope that they enjoy their period in office, however long that may be.

As usual, it is my pleasure to report that our Sub Branch continues to prosper; we are financially sound and will remain so for the foreseeable future, this situation gives the incoming President and Committee a very solid and secure base to work from.

On 9 February, Smithfield RSL Youth Club’s Annual General Meeting was held; I attended and acted as Returning Officer. The Youth Club is well run by their Management Committee and is a credit to the Sub Branch, many thanks for a job so well done, and the example you show to our young people. It is well to remember that the Youth of today are the future of our Country.

On 5 March, I attended the Annual General Meeting of the 203 Army Cadet Unit, held at the Smithfield Club, I acted as Returning Officer. Our delegate, Frank Matthews was re-elected as President. The 203 Cadet Unit has a full complement of Members, who are all very keen to serve, this is evident from their deportment at our Sub Branch Ceremonies as Members of the Catafalque Parties. They do us proud, many thanks to all who are involved in their training. It has been my pleasure and privilege to have served you all as President of Smithfield Sub Branch, for the past 12 Years. Together we have achieved many things on behalf of our Sub Branch and its Members. Most notable among all of these achievements is the financial security that the Sub Branch now enjoys, along with the very good relationship we now have with our Club. Neither of these benefits existed in days gone by and they were only achieved by a lot of effort and the Goodwill of those who were prepared to think outside the square, and do something to bring them about.

In closing this report, I would like to thank all who had faith in me and supported me over the years. I have always done that which I considered to be in the best interest of our Sub Branch and the League. I will continue thus into the future.

You have a new President and Committee working for you. Support them and always remember ‘Unity is Strength’

celebrated his 30th birthday on the 27th February 2014. On the 8th December we had our Presentation night; it turned out to be a wonderful night, great food, great company which was enjoyed by all. These kinds of nights are time consuming and a great effort put into them, from organising the food to the trophies, for the raffles, Barbara done an extraordinary effort once again. We thank our guests of honour – Annette Marsh, our Patron, along with Bill Newall, president of the Sub Branch of Smithfield RSL and his wife Domenica for attending. They also presented some of our bowlers with their trophies. The ones I have missed mentioning, I am truly sorry as I misplaced the outcome.

WOMEN’S AUXILIARY REPORT There is not a lot to report as not a lot has

been happening in the Auxiliary, however we have had one delightful event occur. Congratulations go to our Secretary Margaret Minney who has become the very proud grandmother of twins, Harry Markus and Evie Veronica adding to the three grandchildren she already has.

Margaret Goolemeeze has spent quite some time in hospital recently. However it was good to see she is on the road to recovery as she came to our February meeting. We all wish her a speedy recovery and hope she retains good health in the future. Also Josie Goddard has not been well enough to come to our meetings so we wish her also a speedy recovery as she has been missed by all of us.

Dulcie Long and Sharon Baker have been kept very busy with the welfare work they do for the patients at the Cumberland Hospital. Thank you ladies you do a great job.

It will soon be time for our delegates to go to State Congress, which means the year is already flying past.

We are always happy to have new members join us so if you are a lady and would like to be part of our friendly group, please come along at 1.30pm on the 3rd Monday of the month and you will be made very welcome.

Gwen Riley JPPublicity.

INDOOR BOWLSREPORT Welcome back to bowls everyone, I hope you all enjoyed your Christmas break. Before I get into our report I would really like to ask everybody through the Club, including family and friends that we really do need to have new players, as well as our old players for us to function properly. We hope people would love to come and join our friendly group of players and hopefully you would like it enough to stay and join our group. You would be helped learning to bowl, so no worries on that. Even if you are interested we play every Thursday night upstairs in the Orion Room at 7pm, but you need to come about 10 minutes earlier to put your name down. Even if you come down to watch is alright as well.

2013 came with some good news and sad news. Sad news because one of our fellow bowlers, Maria Day has left us to live with her family up the coast. Maria is a real kind and happy person and a good friend to all, we wish her all the best, and we will really miss her. We have had a few players in hospital having operations, they were Maria Day, Flo York and John Koutsoukas, and they were all wished a speedy recovery.

We have had our former President, now Vice President Barbara Hill excelling in her bowls in the State and Nationals. In the National Championships Barbara travelled to Toowoomba, where she had her first ever attempt in playing singles for Australia, Barbara tied for fourth position, which is an enormous effort playing at that level.

We had a couple of really special wedding anniversaries – Mary and Mario Grimaldi, celebrated their 58th Wedding Anniversary on the 15th October, while Vivian and Alf Pollard celebrated their 46th Wedding Anniversary on the 21st October. While on other special occasions, Donna Woolfe celebrated her 50th Birthday on the 24th September, Barbara Hill celebrated her 60th Birthday on the 17th October, while Kevin Woolfe Jnr just recently
