FOREWORD !

We feel deeply fortunate to have developed a unique approach, which is creating the most

incredible ripple effects in our SA communities and families . . . Every single

day I experience its unfolding. It makes my heart sing!

!Such an approach continuously calls upon us to

dive deeper in understanding its many

facets and to be mentored by every

encounter in each of our projects

and in daily engagements with others.

It requires of us to take o w n e r s h i p,

recognising where we limit ourselves and therefore

each other - where we can still e x p a n d. . . It is an i n v i t a t i o n to move on

multiple lanes on ‘our highway’ as we empower and educate individuals and their communities.

!Quality remains one of our most important values as a Catalyst where we inspire each of our

students to define Quality in who he/she is, creating a unique blend from which to live as a

Change Agent. The caliber developed through extensive COC work is groundbreaking…

!I will let the words and pictures in our Annual Report take you on a special journey rather than

trying to paint the picture here. May each page be another stroke on the canvas. May it touch you

as it daily touches me and leave you with a sense of knowing what possibly can take us ‘there’.

It is really not rocket science. It is very simple concepts applied consistently. They are by each

Student driven passionately, with great commitment and a deep-felt sense of purpose…. a

connection to what moves us all… simply living peacefully in our shared humanity!

!Thank you for visiting and for listening… IN GRATITUDE KARINA FOUNDER

A CHANGE AGENT

A very effective way to prevent and divert our youth and youngsters from pursuing the path of

crime is to shape positive Role Models who meet the youth at risk where they are at and inspire/

guide them towards a different path. We find these potential change agents in some of the most

challenged SA environments...

Imagine your heart opening and a sudden bending of all the rules you used to live by, rules that kept

you locked in a narrow lane on your highway of life; a lane where you gave up on your true self and

where crime became an option. Nothing is what it seems… You are waking up! !A Change Agent challenges old and limiting beliefs and moves consciously towards a full spectrum

of Awareness; healing and actively developing; well aware that there is always more to be

explored and to be learned. Values are deepened in daily conscious practice. A Change Agent

serves wholeheartedly by inspiring change through his/her own living example.

!PERSONAL VALUES-BASED LEADERSHIP MANUAL

!"When we learn to understand that challenges are in our lives to

assist us in becoming more whole and finding a much better balance, we can begin to embrace and trust our path with everything we

attract into it, find peace and happiness and walk through life as a responsible individual”

OUTPUT/OUTCOME: We have serviced three Western Cape prisons. We have valued and nurtured the relationship with each of these prisons and ensured high quality service delivery. !

WORCESTER PRISON PROCESS Assisted by three Change Agents Daniel Davids,

Luyanda Mboniswa & Collin Duda !HELDERSTROOM PRISON PROCESS

Assisted by two Change Agents in the making Theo Mtsutwana& Igshaan Davids !MALMESBURY PRISON PROCESS

Assisted by four Change Agents Bradley Hess, Malcolm Booysen, Andrew Aloni & Alfred Middleway !

1. 8 Change Agents (+3) have attended full COC activation this year and in weekly sessions guided 60+ fellow inmates through the TRI journey in COC1 of which now four have qualified COC1 and joined the TRI Facilitator training in COC3 - going into full COC activation. The process has been monthly supervised by our quality assurance. !

2. We have given green light to and welcomed Marco Simons, Pumzile Salela, Jabu Masilela and Jimmy Majola to the next step on their COC journey. This has brought us to 14 (+1) Change Agents in the making inside SA prisons in 2013/14. !

3. 4 (of the 14) Change Agents with strong TRI toolboxes have re-integrated: Andrew, Collin, Alfred and Malcolm as well as three TRI Students Monwabisi, Jacquel & Vandim - all in our parolee support. !

Welcome home Collin! !Both Collin Duda and Sihle Tshabalala have been committed TRI Students inside Brandvlei and Worcester Prisons. Collin facilitated TRI as part of his COC education over a couple of years. !They were and still are strong resources within Group of Hope in Worcester prison and are now active with their amazing work as ‘Brothers for All’ - touching lives wherever they go. !It is wonderful to experience the Ripple Effect of individuals who begin deep within themselves, knowing that ‘the ripple’ starts with ME! !We are very proud of both of you! !!!!OUR OBJECTIVE 2014-15 !SmilingOne proudly supports Sihle & Collin in their COC Development - we walk heart by heart in Partnership for a crime free South Africa.

Welcome Dennis Witbooi enrolled in his COC education with SmilingOne in 2008 - he is one of eight COC Pioneers. He reintegrated into his community in Valhalla Park in 2012 and has since shown tremendous growth and entrepreneurial skill. !Throughout the past year Welcome has managed to kick-start his Heart & Soul Foundation - his own COC2 Caring Project - and touches thousands of lives in challenged SA communities! He is an amazing resource, whom we support with all our heart. !We are very proud of you, Welcome! !!OUR OBJECTIVE 2014-15 !SmilingOne proudly supports Welcome in his COC Development - we walk heart by heart in Partnership for a crime free South Africa.

!The work with incredibly special Men the past seven years in

South African Prisons has allowed us to understand so much more of what it means to transform into a ‘Gentle Giant’ - one who

serves wholeheartedly. Strength is found in being deeply in touch with your own inner story and vulnerability;

and the ability to meet me in mine. There is kindness that flows like a river from

a consciousness that unites us all! !

OUTPUT / OUTCOME !During November and December 2013: Malcolm facilitated weekly TRI sharing sessions with a group of 15 youth in his local community - availing a sharing platform, allowing the youth to open up, share their feelings and challenges. Together they did an outreach in the community as well as a workshop on appreciation of parents. !Sessions offered the youth: - support during a stressful time of study and exams - more angles on why they experienced challenge and how to resolve them - a platform to express themselves without feeling guilty - the opportunity to speak their hearts - an experience of deep appreciation for what you have

OUTPUT / OUTCOME Franklin facilitated TRI weekly in Grade 6 with 35 learners !- I have a deeper understanding of youth and their challenges, this is key in my role as a

Change Agent.

- The project has been important preparation for our Youth at Risk portfolio. Crime and

its affect on youth is much clearer now.

- The support system of the youth is important! To have a platform of sharing -

especially around their daily challenges.

- Being honest is key with the youth.

- The sharing platform helps teach the youth how to express themselves openly

!OBJECTIVE 2014-15 I use my learning from the one year school pilot in my Change Agent Activities and meet

the Youth at Risk where they are at. I help them build a bridge to a broader understanding

in life - a life where crime is not an option anymore.

Circle Of Change

We have through the past six years in our Community Development Initiative developedan approach that we call Circles of Change (C.O.C.). It is an approach that we havelearned by working intensively in change processes – with individuals and theircommunities.

Each Circle of Change consists of three pillars (key change elements) where TheResponsible Individual is an essential puzzle piece – as a personal values-basedleadership development programme, entrepreneurial skills development programme andas a way of leading a life in gratitude and service.

SKY GALLERY allows full C.O.C Activation.

THE EDUCARE STAFF HAS SHOWN INCREDIBLE COMMITMENT IN EQUIPPING THEIR TOOLBOXES (THE INNER/OUTER RENOVATION) AND HAVE TURNED THEIR CLASSROOMS INTO A PLACE OF LOVE AND LEARNING. THERE IS LESS DAILY PERSONAL STRUGGLE AND THE ABILITY TO TAKE OWNERSHIP - NOT LETTING ‘MY STUFF’ IMPACT ON THE CHILD THAT IS LEARNING. PAUSING & REFLECTING INNER/OUTER RENOVATION !

IT HAS BEEN INCREDIBLE TO BE PART OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF A VERY SPECIAL EDUCARE

CENTRE IN ONE OF THE HIGHEST RISK COMMUNITIES IN THE WESTERN CAPE. THE PROCESS

THE PAST YEAR HAS ALSO BEEN TESTED TO THE BONE AS WE EMBARKED ON THE

RENOVATIONS. IT WAS AN INVITATION TO TRULY UNDERSTAND THAT IT MAKES ABSOLUTELY

NO DIFFERENCE IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT TO ONLY ATTEND TO ‘THE OUTER’ - IN THIS

CASE ATTENDING TO THE POOR CONDITION OF THE BUILDINGS!

!WHAT TRULY MATTERS IS THAT THE FOUNDATION WE BUILD ON IS SOLID AND LASTING. ONE

OF PERSONAL VALUES-BASED LEADERSHIP - A CONSCIOUSNESS AWOKEN DURING THE INNER

RENOVATION. ITS CONTINUOUS ATTENDANCE AND DEVELOPMENT WILL GENTLY CARE FOR

‘THE OUTER’. THAT IS WHEN OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS - JUST LIKE IT DID FOR IVY NYOVANE!

Our growth this year is a testimony of our focused approach ensuring high quality service delivery in all we do. We have been very clear on where to invest our efforts and have not compromised. We have been curious about exploring ideas and concepts as they contribute to growth - therein lies our ability to also say no when an idea does not align fully to our core objective. This year has been all about listening to and being true to our core. !Clarity in our approach gives our beneficiaries a solid platform to develop on, which adds another very important ingredient in our growth mix. !Our continued investment in the Change Agent has taken our approach to a whole new level. The development that has followed is what adds value not only to youth at risk and their communities touched by the Ripple Effect of a

Change Agent; it is also what sustains our partnerships with truly special people and companies who trust in our approach. We care deeply about these partnerships that has fuelled our development engine - simply because they care and as we do believe in that we all own a share in the wellbeing of our society. !What has furthermore contributed to fuel our development engine this year has been the very special partnership with LRMG Performance Agency. The contribution has grown with 83% and allowed us to invest more intensively into the COC development of a Change Agent - towards sustainable livelihoods. !GM Childlife & Ute Force - partnerships shaped via our longterm sponsor Thorp Motorgroup - enabled us to bring the Nyanga Project into full blossoming - gently guided by Change Agents. !

We are geared for another special year!
