• Engineering and research groups doing complex energy system modelling and analysis– See many different approaches of
„how to do” system modelling and analysis– Its tedious for them to decide on the right
one for e.g. analysing storage integration– In bigger projects its necessary to
collaborate and share• E.g. arrive on a common workflow• Share data and intermediate results
– Without adequate tools this istime-consuming andineffective for larger projects
Problems of System Modelling Groups
• What is the right methodology for our project?
• How can we streamline our collaboration?
• Has anyone needed data and sub-models?

• Every time I set up a new system modelling and analysis project, the new team asks me the same questions– Where can I find information about
“how to” approach the project?
– Are there some “templates” and “bestpractices” available?
– Where do I find needed data and sub-models?
➢ This is really boring,
…. time-consuming, annoying, and I would like to focus my support on more important scientific questions
My Problem as a team leader…

An integrated collaboration platform for system modelling and analysis
• Documenting and streamlining the use of common methodology and workflow(s)
• For accessing, managing and sharing data and intermediate project results
• Making final project results and documentation (long-term) available
Would be nice to have

• Integrated, open source Software-as-a-Service solution – Multi-tenant web-based interface and highly scalable – Instruments SmILES methodology– Provides a workflow approach for steering projects– Scalable data management for storing all kind of project results
Our approach – The Shared Data and Information Platform (SDIP)
Key Advantages• Saves time on
performing larger scale energy system modelling and analysis projects
• Easy reusability of results
• Tool for making results and project documentation long-term available

• Platform implemented using open source software– Liferay Portal server +
Elasticsearch search infrastructure
– Generic Data Services of the KIT Energy Lab Project
– Prototypical workflow implementation based on the SmILES Methodology
– Web-based user interfaces for gathering data, presentation and managing results

Early Adopters and further Development
Overview page in SDIP showing workflow tasks for execution of simulations and result analysis
• Is already used in „Energy Lab 2.0“ Helmholtz Association project
• Further developments– Integrate platform with
e.g. simulation tools using the Process Operation Framework (PROOF)
– Integrate data analytics capabilities
Shared Data and Information Platform (SDIP)21.11.2019

• SDIP is an integrated multi-tenant platform for complex energy system modelling and analysis, which
– Streamlines the use of common methodology and workflow(s)
– Easy access, management and sharing of data and intermediate project results
– Making final project results and documentation (long-term) available
• The platform is still experimental but there are already some early adopters
