SMILE CLUB Tooth Decay • Tooth decay affects more than ¼ of U.S.
children ages 6-11 years and more than half of those ages 12-19 years.
• More than 40% of children have tooth decay by the time they reach kindergarten.
• Tooth decay is almost entirely preventable
• Dental caries (decay) is 5x more common than asthma in children.
Prevention
• Brush your child’s teeth twice a day until your child has the skill to handle the toothbrush alone. Then continue to closely watch brushing to make sure the child is doing a thorough job and using only a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.
• Sealants can protect against 80% of cavities for 2 years and continue to protect against 50% of cavities for up to 4 years.
