(Feb. 22, 2012) WCOM FM radio of Carrboro was awarded a $1,500 Orange County Arts Commissiongrant. As one of 16 grant recipients for the Fall 2011 cycle, WCOM will use the grant to improve and expand its stationsproduction and training capabilities. WCOM received the funds on Feb. 7 and plans to purchase equipment that willenable volunteer programmers to produce and educate with professional quality. Training will consist of talk showtechniques; designing a music show; use of social media for promoting programs; and podcasting.Currently our production equipment is also used for recording programs, so it has been difficult to schedule productiontime with any certainty, said Ernie Hood, WCOM host of "Radio In Vivo: Your Link to the Triangle Science Community.Now we will be able to separate the two functions to improve and expand production capabilities. That should notonly help several individual programs but also the stations overall sound throughout the day, as we will be able to moreefficiently record public service announcements for frequent use. The Orange County Arts Commission providesannual grants ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 in the Spring and Fall cycles. Grant recipients must be non-profit artsorganizations, non-profit groups participating in art projects, schools in Orange County, or artists. Everyone sitting here today is different. Each one of us come from different cultures, we practice differentreligions, and we have different preferences .But there is at least one commonality among everyone sitting heretoday--we are all members of the local community.Community radio plays an integral role in maintaining freedom of expression in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area,and it relies on listener and volunteer support to stay on the air. WCOM 103.5 is a non-profit, low power FM radiostation that facilitates the exchange of cultural ideas and music with particular regard to those who areoverlooked or under-represented by other media outlets. WCOM gives a voice to community members byproviding the tools necessary to express diverse viewpoints and promote awareness of community-basedorganizations and services.For all that WCOM does in our community, however, it has no paid station manager. All work at WCOM is doneby volunteers from the very community it serves. Furthermore, the nature of low power radio means a small,tightly stretched budget. WCOMs broadcast and recording equipment are maintained carefully, but havebeen in the station longer than many of the program hosts.With the support of the local community through donations of time, money, and talent, we can continue to givea voice to those without the means to make themselves heard otherwise. Organizations can support WCOMand its programs as an underwriter and in return get a weekly announcement on a program of their choosing foras little as $120 per year. As an underwriter, you will be contributing to WCOMs ability to provide its services whilesimultaneously getting your specific message across to the demographic you are trying to reach. But mostimportantly, as an underwriter, you are ultimately supporting the advancement and development of thecommunity as a whole.Remember, WCOMs sole purpose is to strengthen the community through programming and linkages with thepeople of Carrboro and Chapel Hill. Club members also provided assistance to hospital staff by organizing and cleaning toys in the playroom. The PediatricPlayroom event is a club favorite and one of the most-rewarding service activities forits members. It was a great way to interact with children to get their mind off of their illnesses. It also opened my eyes to the realities of disease in youth, noted HCC member,Tanisha Edwards, on her experience at the Pediatric Playroom.HCC members spend time at the AIDS Alliance-Orange House, a residential facility for people living with HIV/AIDS in Carrboro. Student members created andparticipated in group activities and spent time talking individually with residents at the Orange House. HHC plan to make this an ongoing public service event for theorganizations members.We helped to boost women and mens self-esteemand made them feel loved, said HCC member, Simone Boney, on spending time with individuals at theOrange House.HCC has an ongoing commitment to help build at least one house each year for needy families in Orange County. HCC members volunteered time and energy withHabitat for Health, a partnership between Orange Countys Habitat for Humanity and UNCs Student Health Action Coalition.Seven HCC members pledged to take a symbolic 24-hour stand for the patients and families of the N.C. Childrens Hospital. By participating this years UNC DanceMarathon, HCC members helped in raising $436,709.61, which will be used to improve the quality of life for the patients and families of the childrens hospital.I think its really great that people would stand for 24 hours for us, said eleven-year-old patient Karolyne Batey on her appreciation for all the dancers, moralers andvolunteers at the marathon.NC-HCAPs HCC will maintain its ongoing commitment to public service as it hosts its 8th annual Health on the Block community health fair.
