How to use The White BookThis ‘White Book’ has been developed as a quick reference tool to be used by architects, engineers and specifiers when looking for a quick concept design for a composite slab. By following these 3 simple steps, a suitable deck type/slab/reinforcement specification can be determined for your project:
Step 1, Which Profile and Gauge?Refer to Construction Stage graph on page 5.
Typically, spans are governed by the maximum 'un-propped' condition at Construction Stage. This graph considers the construction stage design and compares the different SMD profile/gauges based on decking sheets being double spans (unpropped).
By cross-referencing the slab depth / span, you can then determine which profile and slab depth best suits your proposed support configuration.
Note: Your product choice may also be governed by the stud requirements for your composite beam design.
Once you have reviewed this graph you should have confirmed profile type (R51+, TR60+ or TR80+), gauge and provisional slab depth.
All tables in this design guide are based on the standard S350 grade profiles. For S450 guidance download Elements® Design Software from www.smdltd.co.uk.
Step 2, Product specific composite slab graphsWith the profile confirmed from step 1, refer to the relevant page for each profile, referencing the product graphs provides the Normal and Fire stage look-up check to ensure the slab depth proposed from step 1 meets your loading and fire rating requirement. The graph shows limits for loadings of 5 & 10kN/m² and fire ratings of 1, 1.5 & 2 hours.
By referring to this graph by checking the profile and slab depth from step 1 you can determine the minimum reinforcement required – shown by vertical lines within the graph for mesh sizes of A142, A193, A252, A393 and 2 x A252, in accordance with BS EN 1994-1-1.
Should the provisional slab depth from step 1 not be appropriate for your required loading and fire rating, go back to step 1 and increase the slab, profile and/or deck gauge.
After this step, you should have confirmed provisional profile, gauge, slab depth and minimum reinforcement required for the slab.
Step 3, Confirm maximum spans for your specific design criteriaHaving determined the minimum reinforcement required in step 2, you can now determine accurate maximum spans for your design (for both double and single span sheets at this stage, if required) using the product, fire rating and reinforcement specific load/span tables. Each design table also enable you to assess the impact of increasing reinforcement, slab depth or profile gauge for UDL loadings of 3.5kN/m², 5kN/m², 7.5kN/m² and 10kN/m².
At the end of step 3 you will now have a confirmed profile, gauge, slab depth and reinforcement for your slab. It should be noted that the design tables are based on minimum code requirements and the design assumptions on page 4.
In certain situations, increased reinforcement or slab depth will be required over and above that suggested within this guide, i.e. enhanced crack control, acoustic performance etc. This guide is provided as a design tool only and the ultimate design responsibility for the mesh / slab depth in the final condition remains that of the project structural engineer.

Technical Design Table NotesThe load/span tables in this document are based on the following design assumptions.
Concrete• Typical concrete grade C25/30 with 20mm aggregate size
• Densities in accordance with Eurocodes:
Normal Weight: 2550kg/m³ (Wet) and 2450kg/m³ (Dry)
Lightweight: 2050kg/m³ (Wet) and 1950kg/m³ (Dry)
• Concrete volumes indicated in sectional properties are based on the slab poured to a constant thickness (recommended), additional concrete volume of span/250 m³/m² can be added to account for additional concrete as a result of deck deflection.
Reinforcement• Step 2 graphs are based on a single layer of A393 mesh
as for shallow slabs double layers of mesh may be difficult to install. It may be possible to reduce mesh at Step 3 depending on the governing design stage.
• BS EN 1994-1-1 specifies 0.2% of the concrete above the ribs, where the mesh does not meet this requirement no span value (-) is shown.
• Top mesh cover of 25mm – consideration must be given to slab cover over deck to allow for mesh laps and nesting, for more guidance refer SMD Technical Guidance Notes (refer SMD website for TGN Online).
Fire• Tables are provided for fire ratings of 1, 1.5 and 2 hours.
• Where the slab depth does not provide adequate concrete cover to meet fire insulation requirement, no span value (-) is shown.
• The Eurocode NCCI (Mesh Only) Method is used, therefore the composite slab and mesh reinforcement (not necessarily the metal deck) must be continuous over one or more internal supports (end bay condition).
• Load category A/B (Residential/Office) is considered where the imposed load is less than 7.5kN/m².
• Load Category E is considered where the imposed load is 7.5kN/m² or greater.
• All tables assume the fire insulation thickness required is acheived by utilising the structural slab thickness only. It may be possible to reduce structural slab thickness where a non-combustible screed is applied and additional bottom reinforcement provided. Elements® Design Software should be used to check such designs.
Spans• Indicated in meters, from centre to centre of supports.
• Based on 127mm support widths.
• Double spans assume adjacent spans differ by no more than 15%.
• In all cases, slabs are designed as simply-supported and in accordance with BS EN 1994-1-1 and UK NAD.
Note: In some instances the maximum single span may be greater than the maximum double span. This occurs where the composite or fire stage govern design, for single spans the concrete section is often increased due to ponding.
Loading• FW in the design tables indicates maximum spans
where the deck is used as formwork only based on an increased concrete density of 2650kg/m³ (Wet) to allow for reinforcement.
• Applied loads shown in the look-up tables are un-factored, however, appropiate load factors have been taken into account in the derivation of maximum permissible spans.
• Should include consideration for partitions, ceiling, services and finishes etc., but not self-weight of the slab as this has been included (where necessary) in the preparation of these tables.
• Consideration should be given to any loadings that may be applied to the slab during construction (i.e. from plant or material storage), as these may be more onerous than the design loadings for the intended building use.
Construction Stage Loading• Considers wet weight of concrete and reinforcement for the
specified slab depth.
• Construction Imposed load of 1.5kN/m² or, 0.75kN/m² generally plus 10% slab weight or 0.75kN/m² (whichever is greater) over a 3m x 3m 'working area' in accordance with BS EN 1991-1-1.
• Concrete volume/weight tables consider concrete only, they do not include the weight of deck or reinforcement.
Deflection• Construction stage is limited to the lesser of Span/180 or
20mm when deflection is less than slab depth/10.
• Limit increased to the lesser of Span/130 or 30mm, when concrete ponding is considered for deflections greater than slab depth/10.
• Tables do not include for any additional concrete as a result of deflection of the steel frame.

SMD’s first trapezoidal profile, added to our product range in 1992. Further research and development has seen our trapezoidal products evolve into the TR+ range. The TR60+ profile enables un-propped spans in excess of 3.5m and is available in 0.9mm, 1.0mm and 1.2mm gauges in both S350 and S450 grade steel.

Initially added to our product range in 2002, the original TR80 has undergone further research and development, evolving to TR80+. This 80mm deep trapezoidal profile is available in 0.9mm, 1.0mm and 1.2mm gauges in both S350 and S450 grade steel.
