SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS 2012–2013NHS MEMBERS
St. Michael’s Catholic Academy community gathered to honor new members inducted into its
Altus Chapter of the National Honor Society. “So much of what NHS students do in dedication
to our school and community goes unheralded,” explained Interim Principal, Michael Volonnino.
“Beyond the hours of study time to earn their grades, they exemplify the ideals of leadership, char-
acter, and service. We are so proud of their accomplishments and look forward to their continuing
contributions.”

FINE ARTSSt. Michael’s Catholic Academy’s Fine Arts Department
continues to provide students with exciting opportunities
to build their appreciation and experience in visual
and performing arts. To create a successful learning
environment, each visual and performing arts class and
extracurricular engages students with a variety of unique
production-oriented experiences. Year after year, the
Fine Arts Department at SMCA offers many unique areas
of study and unique opportunities to learn in Dance,
Music, Theatre, and Visual Art. The 2012-2013 school year
was no exception, as our students had many challenging
and successful opportunities to demonstrate their work.
In our dance classes, students learn by doing kinesthetic
awareness as they connect with the body’s abilities
to coordinate motion and its awareness of where it is
in time and space. Outside of the classroom, students
performed for the Christmas and Spring Dance Recitals.
Drama is a unique combination of all of the arts, and
our drama students were very busy and productive. The
school year began with our Fall Play, The Craving. The
play, a biting satire of the film industry, featured sixteen
students who participated both on stage and behind
the scenes. The spring semester all-school production
was the musical, Little Shop of Horrors, which included
eighteen students who chose a specialty of on stage
or behind the scenes work. The Varsity Drama team
was especially productive during the year as they
participated in ten Texas Forensic Association (TFA)
qualifying tournaments, as well as having qualified for
the state TFA tournament. In the TAPPS State Academic
& Speech contest SMCA Drama boasted state finalists
in three events including a state championship for one
student in Solo Acting. Our Varsity Drama entry in the
TAPPS One-Act Play contest placed 2nd at the district
level and 4th at state. One senior, Danielle Green, was
named best actress at the state contest. The Drama II/
III class performed a theater for youth play, Goldilocks
on Trial, for elementary school students from our
partner schools and also presented their annual spring
production, the comedy The Devil in Sherman Marsh.
Research shows that learning music helps students
understand other subjects by reinforcing skills that
students use in other areas. Our Music students were
successful is several areas. Our exciting Drumline
performed at all home football games, one playoff game,
and had a thrilling rendition of “Little Drummer Boy”
during the all-school Mass during Advent. The symphonic
ensemble performed at the NHS Induction ceremony,
Winter Recital, Spring Recital, Awards Assembly and
Graduation. Music students also participated in the
TAPPS Solo & Ensemble competition and received
an “Excellent” rating for their Medium Ensemble
performances. Several students received a “Superior”
rating for their solo, and one student advanced to the
state level and received a “Superior” rating and a gold
medal. The year concluded with a concert that featured
the Music I class, which was the highest attended spring
music concert in school history.

FAITH LIFE The 2012-2013 academic year was measured with a great deal
of leadership development amongst our students. In the spring,
twelve students from the class of 2013 were selected to serve on the
Senior Leadership Team (SLT), a group of senior students dedicated
to serving the faith life of the SMCA community.
These students dedicated themselves to the task of creating
a student driven faith life by taking part in a three day retreat at
Eagle’s Wings retreat center in Burnet, TX. Having this excursion
take place in July allowed the team an opportunity to bond and
grow through prayer, service, and liturgy before the school year
even began. The SLT Retreat was the first of many experiences
that would take place outside of the classroom and off the athletic
field. This core group met weekly before school to plan, develop,
and eventually lead the day-retreats that each class participated in
during Catholic Schools Week in January. All four of these retreats
took place at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center where
students were engaged in prayer and team building exercises and
activities such as scavenger hunts. In addition to these outings, all
twelve SLT members participated in one of the three Kairos retreats;
a three day retreat designed to activate seniors’ relationship with
God and peers.
Senior Leadership Team members were also student leaders in the
liturgical life of the school. One priority was taking charge of the
masses in Christ Chapel for each grade level. This included recruiting
other students to be guest lectors, gift bearers, and greeters, while
also creating the prayers of the faithful. Outside of the church, the
team also coordinated student volunteers for charitable outings to
Querencia at Barton Creek, Mobile Loaves and Fishes, and Catholic
Charities of Central Texas.
The leadership that these twelve students developed and displayed
during their senior year permeated the entire SMCA community.
Their guidance, poise, and drive created a strong sense of peer
ministry throughout the campus and played a pivotal role in
successful retreats, masses, and service outings.

ALUMNIThe annual homecoming weekend, held on
October 19, 2012, was the first major event
of the year for the Alumni Association. Past,
present and future Crusaders gathered at
Crusader Stadium for the Homecoming football
game. During halftime, the Alumni of the Year
Award was presented. Afterwards, a large crowd
gathered at Opal Divine’s to celebrate a victory
and relive their Crusader memories.
The SMCA alumni flag football game was a fun
and well-attended event during Homecoming
weekend. Past football players came to relive
their glory days and enjoy the beautiful weather,
BBQ, alumni goodies, and kids’ activities. The Maroon team beat the Black team by a small margin!
The Holiday Happy Hour was enjoyable for many past Crusaders. More than fifty SMCA alums and their
spouses attended the Alumni Holiday Happy Hour on December 27, 2012. Good cheer, crusader spirit and
laughter filled the air as past Crusaders caught up with classmates and friends.
During the winter, SMCA alumni swim team members came back for a visit over breakfast tacos and hot
chocolate. Megan Rother Fults ‘03, former swim coach and alum, organized this fun event for current and past
Crusader swim team members. Former Olympian and new SMCA swim team coach, Hans Dersch, led the
group in a brisk winter warm up.
Before graduating, the Class of 2013 enjoyed lunch and each other’s company at the Alumni Induction
Ceremony! Lunch was served while classmates enjoyed watching the senior video, receiving Mrs. Knepp’s
College Awards, and spending time with their classmates before graduation.

through demonstrated leadership, service and decision-making that is consistent with Catholic values.
Tasha transferred to St. Michael’s Catholic Academy
during her sophomore year. Upon graduating
from St. Michael’s Academy in 1992, she attended
the Georgia Institute of Technology and earned a
Bachelor’s of Civil Engineering. After college, Tasha
attended the Department of Defense Air Force
Officer Training School. While on active duty she
earned a Masters of Business Administration and
served as a Civil Engineer officer in a multitude of
positions, including Squadron Commander.
During her career, Tasha received the award for
“Woman of the Year 2003,” at McGuire Air Force Base
and has been recognized several times as an outstanding “Company Grade Officer of the Year.” Tasha’s deployments
include tours in Einsiedlehof, Germany and Al Udeid, Qatar in the Middle East. Tasha is a Veteran of Operations
Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. In 2007, Tasha transitioned into Civil Service and presently is a Contracting
Officer Representative for the 81st Infrastructure Support Division at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi.

ANNUAL APPEAL In 2012-2013, St. Michael’s Catholic Academy was
blessed with an overwhelming show of support from
our greater community for the Annual Appeal campaign.
This past year, an extraordinary $261,549 was raised,
directly impacting our daily student’s experience. The
St. Michael’s faculty, staff, Board of Trustees, and
Foundation Board showed their support for SMCA with
100% participation to the Annual Appeal. Feeding off
this energy, our wonderful parents set the tone for future
families with an incredible 89% giving rate. Thank you
to all who were able to give a gift for both present and
future St. Michael’s students.
Donations to the Annual Appeal go a long way toward
helping St. Michael’s achieve its mission of combining
academic excellence with faith formation and
co-curricular learning opportunities. These gifts support
our dedicated faculty and staff by creating opportunities
and providing resources for our educators to grow as
members of the St. Michael’s community. Co-curricular
learning, an important aspect of all St. Michael’s high
school student’s experience, is also enriched through
these generous gifts.
We are truly appreciative of all those who have
volunteered their time and experience, especially
Campaign Co-Chairs, Mitzi & Chris Easley and Anna &
Jim Gjerset, as well as the Annual Appeal Class Captains.
Thank you again to our generous donors for ensuring
this success!

CRUSADER CLASSIC & BBQ THROWDOWNThe Crusader Classic is a long-standing tradition at St. Michael’s where we invite our community to join us for a little
friendly competition on the nines in support of our school. The funds we raise on this day support financial aid,
scholarships, and our faculty and staff. The 2012 Crusader Classic was held at Falconhead Golf Club on Monday,
October 1, 2012. Participants and sponsors enjoyed a beautiful day of golf in the company of good friends. The night
before the Tournament, the 2nd Annual BBQ Throwdown competition was held at the home of Ben Bentzin. Parents
and supporters enjoyed delicious BBQ sponsored by Schmidt Family BBQ and blues music by the Peterson Brothers
Band. We appreciate all of the hard work by our parent chefs in making the Throwdown possible. Thanks to our
wonderful Co-Chairs, Bill McMeans and Jay Watson, and the tireless efforts of our fabulous committee members, we
were able to raise $38,700. Also, a special thanks to Tim Gigliotti for chairing the BBQ Throwdown and making it so
much fun! Thank you all for your support!

the education of future generations. You can bequeath a percentage of your estate, a fixed dollar amount, or specified
personal property to St. Michael’s Catholic Academy.
CASH & PLEDGES
Cash gifts are immediately available for use by St. Michael’s. Cash gifts may be unrestricted or restricted to special
projects. Pledges enable donors to show support immediately and pay when convenient.
DEFERRED GIFTS

may be donated or a new policy purchased. St. Michael’s should be named as the beneficiary and premiums are tax
deductible.
MATCHING GIFTS
More than 1,000 employers will match gifts to St. Michael’s Catholic Academy. Obtain matching gifts forms from the

St. Michael’s Catholic Academy Annual Report 15
PERSONAL PROPERTY
Art, antiques, jewelry, and rare books are examples of
gifts of personal property that are deductible for income
tax purposes at their fair market value.
REAL ESTATE
Gifts of real estate usually allow the avoidance of the capital
gains tax and provide a charitable deduction. Lifetime
occupancy of a donated residence may be retained.
SECURITIES
Appreciated stocks or bonds can be donated to St.
Michael’s and may be deducted for income tax purposes
at full, fair market value on the date of transfer with no
significant capital gains liability.
UNITED WAY
You can make contributions to any 501(c) 3 not-for-profit
organization of your choice through United Way. Just
ask your United Way representative how to designate
St. Michael’s Catholic Academy as the recipient of your
United Way contribution.
PLANNED GIVING:
Planned giving may be defined as a method of supporting
a nonprofit that enables donors to make gifts larger than
they could make from their regular income. While some
planned gifts provide a life-long income to the donor,
others use estate and tax planning techniques to plan
for charitable giving in ways that maximize the gift and/
or minimize its impact on the donor’s estate. Whether
a donor uses appreciated securities/stock, real estate,
partnership interests, personal property, life insurance,
a retirement plan, trusts, or an annuity, the benefits of a
planned gift can make this type of charitable giving very
attractive to both the donor and the nonprofit. By contrast,
gifts to the annual fund are generally made from a donor’s
discretionary income, and while they may be budgeted
for, they are not considered planned giving.
One donor who understood the value of maximizing a
planned gift was Monsignor Richard McCabe. Monsignor
McCabe worked with the founding members of the school
to create St. Michael’s Catholic Academy, and was widely
considered a beloved friend of the school. At the time
of his passing, Monsignor designated St. Michael’s as the
beneficiary of a $100,000 life insurance policy. By only
paying a small amount for the policy, he was able to make
a significant gift in the form of an endowed scholarship
to help minority students with a financial need attend St.
Michael’s. Monsignor McCabe’s planned gift will ensure
his legacy at the school will live on in perpetuity as an
endowed scholarship for generations of students.
ENDOWMENTSThe St. Michael’s Catholic Academy endowment consists
of funds given to the school that are invested in perpetuity.
Endowed funds can be unrestricted, providing a resource
that can be used to meet current school priorities and
exciting new opportunities as they arise, or can be
designated for specific purposes, including scholarships
for students. We are grateful for all of the generous
donors who have so strongly believed in the future of St.
Michael’s Catholic Academy.

GRANDPARENTS’ DAYEach year, we are pleased to host a special day in which we
welcome our grandparents and grand friends to join in the daily
life of our campus. Grand Day was celebrated on November 1,
2012. The day included a campus tour, an all-school Mass for All
Saints’ Day, and a delicious lunch in Café Loredo. We had the
best turnout yet, and are excited that the students were able to
have so many loved ones visit them here at school! Thank you to
everyone who participated and helped make this a memorable
event!

fellowship while supporting St. Michael’s students.”
Mike Volonnino, Interim Principal, spoke to the crowd about exciting technology changes taking place on campus and
introduced a moving video created by students from the multi-media class. “Graduates of St. Michael’s go to some
of the most prestigious colleges in the country and many will return to Austin to lead the next generation,” Volonnino
remarked.
“Our over-reaching goal is for St. Michael’s to replicate the university environment, in form and function. Our curriculum
drives college-level ideals: collaboration, independent inquiry, and student engagement. This legacy of excellence at
St. Michael’s is made possible through the generosity of donors and the support of our community.”
