1/3
The SmartPlug tool is a remotely operated, bi-directionally piggable, double-block isolation tool that
allows isolation of pipeline sections at full operating pressure, eliminating the need to bleed down the
pipeline. Modication and maintenance work on the pipeline can therefore be carried out with minimum
disruption of operations. Different congurations of the tool are possible such that it can be custom
engineered to meet project specications. The externally localized SmartTracksystem is used to control
the SmartPlug tool and communicate with it.

FEATURES
In its basic conguration, the SmartPlug tool consists of
the following:
- one or more plugging modules
- a control module (CM) that contains the
communication, pressure monitoring, and tracking systems
together with the battery pack and hydraulic system
- a monitoring and tracking module (MTM) that
contains a backup pressure monitoring and tracking system
together with a battery pack.
Tool conguration varies from job to job, depending on the
size and intended application. Hydrotesting is possible using a
specically designed tool.
The different modules of the tool are connected by ball joints,
and the tool is therefore both exible and highly piggable.
The pigging disks are designed according to project
specications to provide sufcient drive for pigging the tool.
The tool has a hard OD typically 6%10% smaller than the
pipe ID, enabling smaller restrictions to be handled. For certain
applications, it may be possible to design a tool with an even
smaller hard OD (ca. 15% smaller than the pipe ID).
The SmartPlug system provides fail-safe locking of the isolation
plug modules because these are secured by the differential
pressure introduced across each plug module. Typically, a
plug module is unset by returning the isolated section to operating
pressure. The unsetting springs then unset the plug with or without
assistance from the hydraulic system.
Each tool has a fail-safe unsetting system. If all communication fails,
the tool can still be unset and recovered. The passive safety release
system is activated by increasing the pipeline pressure, typically on
the low pressure side, to a predetermined pressure.
The SmartPlug tool provides fully redundant double-block isolation,
i.e., the plug barriers are designed to ensure that even if one plug
module fails, both barriers are not lost.
Each plug module is individually pressure tested at a pressure that
is at least 1.43 times the operating pressure. The entire SmartPlugsystem is type approved by Det Norske Veritas (DNV), and each
tool undergoes a project-specic Factory Acceptance Test (FAT)
witnessed by DNV.
APPLICATIONS
These include but are not limited to the following:
Riser valve repair and hydrotest Replacement of shutdown valves,
traps, and trap valves Riser replacement or repair Platform bypass
New platform tie-in Midline repair of damaged pipeline
Installation of midline valves Asset protection during heavy lifts,
construction work, etc.
